Make sure you clear everything off of your car tonight, clear it off your roof as well. Because that snow can go flying off your roof when youre up at speed and go flying behind you. Dont forget to shovel your sidewalk before. When this all freezes up tonight, its going to turn into the consistency of concrete. Dont forget, if you opened up the faucets for the outside of your house, the exterior faucets, maybe you washed your car in the last week or so, make sure your turn those faucets off again and drain them, because were going to have very cold temperatures tonight and staying below freezing here all the way into thursday. So make sure that you do that. Otherwise, you could have a burst pipe. Thats the way it looks out here on the storm team 4 weather deck. Were going to continue to watch this storm system move out. First thing you should know, so far we have not seen any announcement from opm in terms of government workers for tomorrow, but we have seen Anne Arundel County schools call for a twohour delay. Page county in virginia also on a twohour delay. Metro access will be back up and running tomorrow. A live look now at Reagan National airport where we are seeing some flights in and out right now. So far today weve seen more than 1200 cancellations in and out of our three major airports. Thats according to flight aware that shows the worst hit areas, new york city, chicago and boston. And utility crews are working to restore power to,000s in our region. Right now, pepco has about 3200 customers without electricity, nearly all of them in Prince Georges County. Bge, 1600. Smeco, 3600. Dominion power has about 1200 in Northern Virginia without power this evening. Frederick county, maryland, took the biggest wallop from this winter storm. Ten inches of snow fell there. You mentioned state route 85. Take a look behind me. This is clearly not your afternoon rush. Traffic volumes far below what they should be. By tomorrow morning we expect it to pick up significantly. The snow totals are much higher here in frederick. Really it might have made things easier for the road crews and for the homeowners who have snow blowers. For the first time in 14 months matt pulled out his snow gear in meyersville and cleared the street near the elementary school. It took two helpers the afternoon to clear his dads driveway. Just a little more slippery than i thought it would be. As you could see our driveway is very sloped. Reporter a different problem. A snow removal operator mistakenly smacked down a traffic light, shutting down a busy intersection all day. Still so many road not just in northern Montgomery County, but here in frederick county. We get really nice pictures of the american and d. C. Flags with all this wind down here. I have to say it was not the easiest day to be out and about in the nations capital. The commute was fine because there was nobody on the reporter the national zoo with its steep walkways was closed for the day. But tourists on spring break lined up for museums that opened at noon. Schools opened two hours late, just like the city government. But there were no major reported problems except for getting there. It was real bad getting to school, wasnt it . Northern virginia, the further you travel from i95 and the closer you come to the blue ridge, the more snow you kasaw. These are the words that people hate to see at the airport, cancelled, cancelled. We have talked to numerous passengers who said their flights were cancelled last night because of this weather. Today theyve been scrambling to try to get on flights heading to their destinations. We got a call on the cell phone last night before we left for the airport. They were in washington for spring break. We got a call from the aa that we got cancelled because of the weather. So they want to change us to chicago, then chicago to nashville. Why rain more than snow caused the main roadway, route 5, to be closed for most of the day. And we have new developments tonight in that nude photo scandal rocki the marine corpng thousands of people in Charles County are still without power after the storm. We just got word there will be an overnight Emergency Shelter opening for those who need a warm place to sleep. Its located at the department of Community Services building. The address is right there on the screen in front of you. In the meantime, the news4s chris gordon drove around the county today checking out the damage from all that ice and snow. Reporter well, wendy, people here in Charles County have been facing a major inconvenience all day long. This is route 5. Its a main roadway. It is closed in both directions just behind me. Cars have been detoured around about a one mile area, long lines waiting. Its all because of the storm last night. Theyre trying to allow crews to restore power. Last night they didnt have a lot of snow, but they had rain and frigid temperatures and blustery winds. It froze, causing dangerous i. C. E. Three utility poles snapped had to be replaced by crews working with smeco. It wasnt the snow that caused this damage. It was the overnight freezing rain that weighed down tree branches, tearing down electric lines. At its height 14,000 customers in Charles County lost power. We woke up this morning and there was nothing. Absolutely nothing. The kids was there. The kids were home, so we couldnt get the kids nothing to eat. We said pu to eat. Reporter power was finally restored. I closed the store and stayed inside. Thats all. Reporter when did the power come back on . 11 00. Reporter during our drive around Southern Maryland we saw miles of glistening tree branches encased in ice. Some are sagging over electric lines. In accokeek we saw this tree in front of a church split right down the middle, a testament to the force of the ice and wind. We spoke with one motorist whose car was hit by falling ice and then hit again as we interviewed her. Just a burst of ice just hit the windshield of the car. Reporter scare you a little . Yes. Reporter more than a little . Yes. We just experienced it. Reporter just happened again. Yes, sir. Reporter we better move you out of harms yes, sir. Reporter well, the ice is beautiful, but it is dangerous. Ahead at 6 00, whether the people here in Charles County without power will be facing a cold, dark night as winds pick up and temperatures dive. Thats coming up at 6 00. To Fairfax County now where road crews have been busy salting and sanding all day long. Many folks heeded the advice to stay home. But others had to get out. Virginia department of transportation is warning drivers if you plan on driving tomorrow, prepare for icy roads. The snow is always nice to look at when youre walking arounds downtown. But this time of year it could spell some bad news for one of our citys most iconic landmarks. The Cherry Blossoms this morning coated with ice. The National Park Service Tells Us temperatures have been warm enough to prevent damage. That could change overnight tonight. Storm team 4 says we could see temps in the mid 20s by the tidal basin. It is producing some snow showers passing just north of the metro area now, to be followed by subfreezing temperatures that are going to last for a couple of days. Well, this late season snowstorm may have created a few headaches for people in our region, but its also brought its own beauty. For lawmakers on capitol hill, the House Budget Committee rescheduled its markup for the Republicans Health care bill until later this week. Today, the white house also had its First Response to the analysis released by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. More than 24 Million People would be without insurance under this gop plan. Im shomari stone here in storm team 4 x 4 on a street called celebration way. There is no celebration on this block. No party. Why . If you take a look, look at this roadway right here. This is a secondary road in a residential neighborhood. This is slush on this road. People have been operating this street as one lane. You have to be very careful. Potentially dangerous for people who live in this neighborhood. Chief meteorologist Doug Kammerer tells me that the temperatures are expected to dip to the 20s. So you see all this slush and snow will freeze overnight. You have to be very careful. Right now the Maryland Department of transportation state Highway Administration is continuing with winter storm operations throughout the region. More than 1600 state and contract trucks are continuing to treat roads as the temperatures drop later tonight, even treated roads may be icy so travelers should remain alert and reduce speeds. Thats according to sha administrator greg slater. You could come across another road like this one here and you dont see any slush or ice. If youre going to be out, make sure that youre careful. Snow blowers and shovels arent the only tools youre going to need to bounce back from this storm. Tracee wilkins has seen the damage across this county. Shes in Upper Marlboro to show you why you need something with more muscle. Reporter yeah, absolutely. Shovels are not going to be enough to deal with the damage weve seen in Prince Georges County. This is just a small example of the problems weve seen here. Tree limbs, branches and in some cases entire trees that have fallen. It st ice and sleet. Its all heavy and wet and not very fun to shovel. Reporter but soon, plows that were supposed to be focused on snow, were more focused on fallen tree limbs and branches. You actually are seeing the part after the county came and actually plowed this to the side. But this whole street was covered with trees all up and down it. I heard a loud noise, boom. I heard it. It just boom. I said, oh my goodness. Reporter from the northern part of Prince Georges County to the southern part of the county theyve just fallen and pop and like you hear them go crack. We heard boom, boom, boom, boom. Reporter tree limbs and branches were falling left and right with some near miss and some direct hits. My husbands truck was parked here and it fell between his truck and the boat knock on my door and was like youve got trees sitting on top of your car. Reporter county Officials Say fallen trees and limbs have been the biggest problem with this storm that left just 24 inches of snow and ice in part of the county. We lost her mike. Froze up on us. Tom joins us now. Boy, you had a wild commute. You were telling me about your drive in from way out. Ive got a very long driveway. Hadnt been plowed. It was mostly sleet. It was like driving on ball bearings. That was an all wheel drive vehicle. It was quite a challenge. And the icing we had in Southern Maryland, that was the one thing that most forecasters missed yesterday. Did not see that coming. We thought temperatures w would be mostly rain there. Unfortunately that was an incredible event, unforecasted unfortunately. Look there at Prince Georges Countys camera. Its bouncing around in a gusty wind right there at national harbor. You can see the waves on the potomac getting kicked up by winds gusting around 30 miles an hour. Sky looks dark to the north. Thats where weve had some snow showers passing. They are continuing to come on through just to our north. Wear your warmest winter coat, a warm hat, gloves and even your sunglasses. We have some sun out now in parts of the region. Well have some tomorrow too. Here are snow showers passing just to our nourth there across Montgomery County. This is tracking off to the south and east and continuing to pull away from the immediate metro area. Thats probably going to be the last one from this storm. Its not quite done with us yet. Its spinning away here over southern and central new england. It came just close enough to us to bring that warm air in and change that snow over to sleet throughout much of the region. Here are our feelslike temperatures right now with the winds gusting around 30 miles an hour. It feels like january, not march. Feelslike temperatures are subfreezing. The current temperatures are now getting down to near freezing. Were starting to see a freezeup already in frederick and good faithe er ersbur er ee faithersburg the sleet and snow is now freezing right back up there. By contrast fredericksburg is at 43. Reagan national 49. Those temperatures hour by hour are going to continue to drop. All the way down to near 20 degrees predawn. This is for most of the rural areas. Right there at the t for the Cherry Blossoms, it may get down to the mid 20s and damage those blossoms again. Tomorrow its only going to be in the upper 20s to just near 30 degrees. That is colder than the average high we get at all during the entire winter during the day on winds. Winds gusting 3040 miles an hour tomorrow. Windchills, Single Digits throughout much of the day on wednesday. Then wednesday night, right back down into the low 20s throughout much of the region. Maybe mid and upper 30s. Then right back down below freezing wednesday night. Then finally climbing back up to near the average high on friday in the upper 40s. Then above average high on saturday. Maybe into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. Then on sunday, getting gusty winds. Temperatures back down chilly again into the mid 40s. A little bit milder monday. Tuesday maybe right back up around 50 will be moderating a bit as well and no more snow. The schools are already starting to weigh in for tomorrow. Prince William County schools are closed. Carol county and now culpepper county schools opening two hours late. New report by the Government Accountability office has a pretty scathing review of the way metro has carried out its safetrack program. Among the issues, the gao says while metro developed alternatives to safetrack, it did not determine costs or impacts of those options. Metro still needs to identify 40 million to fund the program.
