The 911 call came in just before 11 00 last night as neighbors were setting off fireworks in the streets. Debris left on the street today shows a large number of fireworks were used here, including firecrackers and m80s, which often sound like gunfire. Police department is investigating the shooting in a press release npd says Metro Transit Police officers arrived on the scene for reports of illegal gun. The suspect fired multiple shots at the metro transit officers. One of those officers returned fire killing the suspect. This is obviously a frightening place to be. Reporter no officers were injured. Police would not say how many shots were fired. The suspects gun was recovered by police. Metro would not comment on the shooting but did say the officer involved has been on the metro police force for 12 years. In a memo obtained by news4, the chief told his staff, the officer fired on an armed suspect who was taken to the hospital and later pronounced deceased. The officer is uninjured and cooperating fully with the mpd investigation. The officer involved is on administrative leave pending the outcome of this incident. Obviously with the time of day that it is right now, this is having a severe impact on traffic in this area. Traffic that was already bad as Police Closed down the intersection as part of their investigation into this bank robbery. What we are told, you can see the td bank over there, about 3 30 this afternoon, a man came in there and announced a robbery. He left the bank and this is when things got more difficult for the investigators e. He left behind a backpack. Now, Fairfax County police do not know what is in that backpack and right now they are in the process of trying to make sure the backpack is safe, trying to make sure there are no explosives in it. They have what looked to me to be what we call the bomb robot over there and the streets closed down and the shopping center, wilson shopping center, parts of it, if not all of it, have been evacuated.
