Today the Maryland State Senate approved a bill called law use an ignition interlock system. The Police Officer who was killed by a suspected drunk driver last fall. Metros top safety official turned in his resignation one week after the Transit System shut down metro rail for an entire day to conduct emergency safety checks. It also came on a day when a fire broke out in the tunnel in northern virginia. News 4 chris gordon live at the claredon station on the days events. As if metro didnt have enough problems s to begin wit adam tuss broke this story this afternoon on the nbc washington app. Lou brown has been the acting chief Safety Officer for about six months now. His resignation becomes effective april 22nd. The position of chief Safety Officer has been a precarious one at metro to say the least. In addition to scoreof issues, the previous chief Safety Officer was publicly criticized by the metro board and then he resigned. Now, metro will be conducting interviews for a new chief Safety Officer next week. The resignation of lou brown comes on the same day that all of the metro stations here in arlington, virginia, were closed for about an hour this morning because of a fire. The fire broke out in a tunnel here at the claredon station. Arlington county firefighters were called to the claredon metro station just before 10 00 a. M. They intartered the station and found light smoke. We evacuated the station and had units shut down power to the third rail. Reporter a Metro Emergency Response Team found the fire in the tunnel leading into the claredon station. Metro says it was caused by burning debris on the track bed and was not an electrical cable issue. Metro service was roslon and shuttle buses transported passengers between the five arlington stations that were closed. I tried to get off and they had metro buses coming back and forth and it was taking like 40 minutes. I got back to head back. But its just been ridiculous. Youve given up . Yeah. Reporter just before noon, metro began single tracking orange line trains between boston and foggy bottom. But silver line trains stopped at east falls church. There is nothing on the board that says when the next train is coming. You know, its just people are asking me if theres when the next train and i have no idea either. Too late. Part of my job. Reporter now, this evening Orange Line Service is back to normal here at the claredon station and throughout all of the stations in arlington. The latest on the situation in belgium. Right now were learning more about the victims. They include two american siblings alex and sascha pinczowski. The pair had just gotten to the airport when the bombs went off. In brussels authorities took three people into custody. Belgium officials also confirmed that one of the suicide bombers at the airport is the same suspected bombmaker from the paris attacks. Meanwhile, Salah Abdeslam being held in belgium has stopped cooperating with investigators, refusing to say anything about the brussels attacks. Chris, back to you. A driver and a truck similar to this one came up from behind him. The driver was driving aggressively and then shot at his window shattering the glass. The Victim Told Police he saw the driver pointing a gun at him. He tried to follow that driver but lost him near roe this happened at 1 00 in the morning. Yeah, this goes back to october of 2014. It was a friday just like gunfire in the 3800 block of hay street northeast. The victim, caught in the crossfire of all of this was 9yearold Jaydan Stancil and out there playing when the shots erupted. Three people in all were shot but jadan was the most serious of them and d. C. Police officers jumped into action as we hear now from police chief cassie lanear. When the officers were on the scene they realized how serious his injury was and potentially fatal. Saving his life they drove him to the hospital saving his life. Reporter it did save his life. He wasnt expected to recover, but he did. Now today they arrested 27yearold kenneth parker. Hes got 14 counts against him in connection with that shooting on hay street. They found parker at d. C. Jail and he was under arrest and already incarcerated for some now, again, hes facing 14 new counts in response to this and police say that they are not finished. She spoke to jaydans mother and she thinks there are more to come this place is still open. One of five cases that police were announcing today. He attacked the pizza Delivery Driver last year fighting over a parking spot. At least 31 people were killed in those attacks in brussels and that includes two americans. The siblings were on the phone with relatives when two bombs exploded in the prBrussels Airport. Belgium privacy laws and even counselor officials from visiting those in the hospital without the patients consent. Then late thursday hospital officials shared the name they were treating with the family. The pinczowski family released this statement. The belgian authorities tonight provided, to the families a list of the names of all remaining victims of the tragedy of march 22 who remain alive. Sadly, were not among them. There was ash everywhere. Doctors have described the blast injuries as similar to those in a war zone. We just heard pat talking about mason wells, one of the mormon missionaries. He suffered second and third degrees burns on his hands and face and also had shrapnel embedded in his leg. Today wells talked to matt lauer and told him he feels lucky to just be alive. I was conscious. I was conscious for, you know, the whole four hours following the bombs and even when they went off. My burn injuries and injury to my foot, i know, came from the first blast. I actually saw fire in front of my face and on the ground around me from that. My body was lifted off the ground during the first blast and it was very loud and i started running towards the exit. Started running towards the exit and i had taken a couple steps about three seconds later the second blast went off and it went off to my right and i could feel the blast. I feel very lucky to have made it out with the injuries that i had being so close. I hope those other families know that as many care about them and that are wishing them the best. Im still a little afraid. I just want somebody to catch her and put her in jail. Reporter just a short time ago police confirming that that woman was taken into custody in Prince William county. Shes currently undergoing a mental evaluation and police saying as of now would not face any charges. In officer christopher brosner after police say blare tried to run away during a routine traffic stop on tuesday. Blare then died from that injury. But hes accused of dragging the officer with his car. On thursday, the states medical examiner determined blair did die from a single gunshot wound to the leg. The officer is on leave until the investigation is completed. A warning from police about black bear sightings. A bear and cub spotted in someones yard yesterday afternoon. Grabbed a bird feeder, as well as a bag of bird seed because you cant have one without the other and then took off towards i66. Just a day before, two small black bears were spotted near stream valley park. Police are telling everyone to keep a safe distance from these bears. Those bears dont look all that small to. Reporter jennifer is holding a Court Summons she got after riding the Virginia Railway express for the very first time. I started reading and i said, oh, my gosh. I actually have to go to court. Reporter it was the day that metro shut down. And then decided to try out vre to get back taher car in springfield. She says she bought her ticket here at the alexandria station and then got on the train. When the conductor asked to see her ticket, thats when things went down hill. He told her it was an invalid ticket. The conductor that i dealt with, you know, really treated me as if i was a criminal. Reporter although she said she paid for the ticket about 3 30 in the afternoon, the time stamp said it was purchased at 8 37 that morning. She is adamant she bought it in the afternoon and said her Credit Card Company has verified that. I have proof that i actually paid for it. I didnt steal the ticket from someone else and try to reuse it from that morning. Reporter she has asked vre to give her a waiver but hasnt heard back. Vre ceo doug specifically, but there is a process for riders who feel they were unfairly ticketed. We have processes and if it is something that is waivable, well process it that way. Reporter she could skip court by paying a 100 fine and court costs. But she plans to fight her case before a judge next month. In alexandria, Darcy Spencer, news 4. A little girl is recovering this afternoon after she got hit by a car trying to catch a school bus. It happened right along lewistown road just north of lake anna. Investigators say the 11yearold was waiting to cross the street and we are told she did break a few bones but expected to survive. The state of virginia came down on Stafford County and said its Fire Department broke some rules. Now, the county is making some changes. Late last month two firefighters took a sick toddler to the hospital in their fire truck. Now, the child was having a seizure and the firefighters were the first to get there and thought they could get the child arrive. Well, they were suspended for that decision. Now, theyre back on the job and after an internal review, the department is trying to improve its communications and training to help those firefighters make better decisions in those difficult situations. Temperatures are right around 70 degrees and temperatures now in the 70s in fredericksburg and charlottesville and everybody else in the mid up toer 60s and Shenandoah Valley and temperatures in the low 60s. With the clouds clearing, those temperatures are going to fall pretty quickly and also feels a little cool out there because we have this northwesterly wind and, boy, gusting up there. 18 miles an hour in gaithersburg and 31 miles an hour in winchester. Wed had these winds through much of the day here in d. C. Youll have some of the petals missing if youre headed down to the Cherry Blossoms by tomorrow morning. Good news is, lighter wind tomorrow. But beautiful picture taking. Almost looks like its any real snow. Clearing the clouds out rather quickly and mostly clear overnight and thats when temperatures plummet because clouds act as an insulator for us. Without them, that temperature falls with the clear skies and lighter wind. So, 30s to mid40s inside the beltway. It is going to be a chilly start tomorrow morning. So, when you wake up tomorrow morning, much cooler conditions. Again, temperatures anywhere from the upper 30s to the mid40s but eventually well warm up taright around 60 degrees tomorrow. Looking good for tomorrow. Mostly sunny and much lighter wind out there. 60 degrees is our normal temperature for this time of year. Not doing too bad. And then a little warmer for easter sunday. Well start that morning cold. So, again, if youre heading to sunrise services, bundle up. Temperatures will top out in the mid60s by the afternoon and increasing clouds but well be dry. Mcmillan was an American Army medic who was captured by the enemy back during the korean war. He was declared killed in action. Tonight his remains are back with his family in virginia as they get ready to hold his funeral 60 years after he went missing. His remains were brought back to thursday. He went missing in 1951, but wasnt until 2007 that his remains were positively identified. The military work for nearly ten years to collect the entire skeleton and now his funeral is scheduled for tomorrow. Remembering Garry Shandling.
