And now simms will soon stand trial for the death of her little boy. Tragic is a better word all of the way around. Reporter a states attorney for Charles County says no one at this point has ordered that simms undergo a mental evaluation. Right now, police in mississippi are searching for one professor in connection with shooting and killing another professor. The delta state campus remains on lockdown right now as officers look for shannon lamb. They call him a person of interest in the shooting of dr. Ethan schmidt. His body was found this morning and say lamb could have been involved in a homicide in a town 30 miles from campus. Hundreds of officers responded to this mornings shooting. No students were injured, though. At the live deck, im Chris Lawrence. Three life terms for a man who raped a Prince William county mother at gunpoint last year while her two children were nearby. Julie carey live in manassas where she last spoke with the victim of that attack. Jules . Reporter well, this youngoe mother tells me when she found a stranger armed with a gun in her apartment in the middle of the night, her first concern was for her children. She was able to protect them, but she suffered greatly. Finally today, the sentence brings her some relief. The team of detectives and prosecutors that stood by a young mother as she first took the witness stand and then testified at the sentencing hearing for this man, 33yearold prince perkins. Today enormous relief as the judge followed the jurys recommendation and sentenced perkins to three life terms plus 70 years. For the victim, there were tears of happiness. Weve agreed to protect her identity. Relief that he was off the streets, and he couldnt harm me or anyone else. Reporter the investigation showed perkins stalked the victim for months before the may 2014 attack, watching her coming and going from her woodbridge apartment. Then the day before the attack he broke in and stole her cell phone and spare key. The next night he entered at gunpoint and found the victim, her young son sleeping by her side. She got her son to safety, but then her daughter woke up and came into the room. The worst fear was not so much for myself, but him killing my kids. He pointed a gun at my daughter when she came into the room. So at that point i had to do whatever it was that he told me to do for my kids. Reporter she protected her kids that night, but the impact of the attack on her, life changing. I dont feel comfortable by myself. I dont drive. Its hard to take my kids out alone. But with the support of herr family and this team, the victim decided to push ahead with the case, a decision she hopes will protect other women. By me going through this it wasnt easy. It wasnt easy at all, but i had to do this to get him off the street. Reporter in court again today the defendant chris perkence maintained his innocence. He says he plans to appeal. Enoch wilson, arrested and convicted of the motor bike theft and got five years probation, a chance to turn his life around, but it appears he never made that turn. This is an individual thats obviously a danger to our community at large. Last december enoch nelsons upset because he lost a pair of air jordans and lebron james sneakers to his half brother gambling on a video game so he and a friend come to this apartment in Silver Spring and home invasion. At gunpoint, nelson gets the sneakers. He gets a widescreen tv, but he also gets identified by his family members. Enoch nelson, back in jail again. The moral of the sty, pat o this is youre given a Second Chance. Youve got to straighten out and do the right thing, and if you dont straighten up youre going to get put in jail if you commit another crime which is what he did. Mayor muriel bouncer announced another part of her plan to reduce crime. She met with prisoners inside the d. C. Jail. Theyre part of a new Workforce Training Program designed to keep those convicted of crimes from becoming repeat offenders. The Program Provides muchneeded skills and it allows inmates charged with misdemeanors to leave the jail and work while they await trial. This Program Gives me depth and something to believe in. It makes me want to go back to society and get a job, work, take care of my family, my grandkids. The mayors plan also includes a program that helps women reenter the workforce. The women are paired with mentors who have successfully reentered society themselves. This prompted a massive man hunt. Now the former new york prison worker who helped those two Inmates Escape says she was depressed at the time and the inmates took advantage of her. Now, we are told that there were no southeasteigns of any brakin road and that leads troopers to believe the driver may have had a medical emergency and that is something they cannot determine here on the scene and thats something that theyll figure out later, possibly after an autopsy, but there were witnesses out here and folks who saw what happened, and people who were filing their reports of what they saw to the police that they were investigating. For folks who use this roadway, we can tell you that they now have the right hand lane, the shoulder open so that folks can get by. Reporter wendy, this is the first meeting of this group since the Commonwealth Attorney ruled last week that there was no criminal involvement in the death of Natasha Mckenna in february. Now mckenna who is 37 was an inmate at the Fairfax County jail in february when she was tasered while she was being restrained in an effort to remove her from the jail. Now she suffered from schizophrenia and had been in the jail for several days. They were trying to transfer her to alexandria where she was facing charges of assault on a police officer. Now mckenna died three days after the incident at the jail, died at Fairfax County hospital with the protesters here tonight will be talking about what they feel could have been done for her to keep her out of the system, divert mentally ill patients from the system. They say that that video was terribly disturbing to them in that it showed a person who was very obviously suffering from Mental Illness being treated this way. They feel there could have been a better way. Back to you. The mayor of baltimore wants her interim commission tore take the role of the citys top cop permanently. Mayor stephanie rawlingsblake says she wants kevin davis to take the helm of the citys police department. Davis has been interim commissioner since the mayor fired actually bat in july. And we are following a developing story out in california. We have learned that 23,000 people have been displaced by two wildfires torching the state. What makes this fire unique and makes it different from so many of the other blazes that we have covered here is the speed at which it covered. It plowed right through this neighborhood, taking down this apartment complex in a matter of minutes. Its emblematic of the fire conditions crews here face and these extreme Drought Conditions and it was raining embers in this area and take a look at this roof here and the fire ripped right through it and leaving behind the steady, sturdy metal pilings that are all across this area and fire Officials Say this blaze was so intense there was nothing they could do. There were no homes they could save. Again, 400 homes here lost and firefighters say theyve never seen a blaze move this quickly and destroy this much property so fast.
