All the equipment gearing up to spread out across the district maryland and virginia. Well here we go. The first snowfall of 2015 and wouldnt you know it the gang is all here. All the trucks at the ready for whatever is coming. Drivers like Francisco Sanchez gearing up as well. Francisco, what do you think about the snow tomorrow 1 to 2 inches. That scare you at all . Yeah because im going to be off from work. Reporter no telling what your work plans will be but if we get snow during the morning rush that certainly makes it harder for road crews to clear the roads. Take a look at the snow budget local crews have ready this year. In d. C. The department of public works with 6. 2 million on hand. In maryland the state Highway Administration with 51 million statewide. And in Northern Virginia vdot with 52 million to spend. The conventional thinking with snow crews, every inch amounts to about 1 million in cleanup. Bridges and overpasses getting the majority of the attention. Cold temps mean whatever falls will stick. Some like ibrahim taking it in stride. They say they have been through this before. Does it make you nervous driving in the snow . No. Actually last year i drove to boston when the winter storm socked us here in virginia. So like i was driving, and i was seeing the snow coming. So im racing with the snow, bob. Doesnt make me nervous. Reporter just have to slow down and take your time . Yeah. Reporter and back here now live coming up at 6 00 what new tricks do road crews have for treating the snowfall this year . Reporting live along the beltway, adam tuss news4. Adam thank you. Those words tonight from former redskins cornerback fred smoot, after a not guilty verdict in a Domestic Assault trial. After the trial, he sat down with our chris gordon in leesburg with more on what he had to say. Chris . Reporter he said i have never hit a woman, i would never hit a woman. And he would really like his broadcast jobs back. Moments after the not guilty verdict here in the Loudoun County juvenile and domestic court, i sat down for an exclusive interview with fred smoot. First thing came to my mind is just picking up the pieces trying to get my life back. Reporter Valerie Jackson testified that on november 23 her former boyfriend, fred smoot, woke her up in a rage screaming for the keys to the truck he let her use. Ms. Jackson said she was scared and ran into the bathroom. She testified smoot kicked a hole in the door and once he got in ripped her shorts leaving marks on her stomach, and ripped a cell phone from her hands, causing abrasions. But former redskin, fred smoot, testified in his own defense, and had a different version of that argument. Smoot testified he needed the keys to that truck because she had the only set, and his escalade wasnt working. He said he had to go to work at comcast in bethesda maryland on a redskins game day, and she told him to take a cab or call a friend. He said he got frustrated and kicked the door open. But didnt hit her. He ripped her shorts he said to keep her from running outside partly clothed. He said she was trying to ruin my career because i broke up with her in october. And refused to pay her medical and legal bills. Smoot was suspended from his broadcasting jobs after he was charged with misdemeanor assault in november. Today judge jacob found smoot not guilty saying smoot didnt intend her harm even by busting in the bathroom door concluding why didnt ms. Jackson just give him the keys and let him go to work. I have put together a pretty good portfolio, and i was working for some pretty good companies. And i just want that back. I just want them to know before this happened i had never touched a woman, and i just want to change the view of how people look at me right now. Reporter whats your reaction to the verdict . People get away with murder like i keep saying. A not guilty verdict in this country happens every day. Reporter now, this assault charge against fred smoot came at a very sensitive time when professional football was under intense scrutiny for the way it handles Domestic Assault cases. And coming up on news4 at 6 00 fred smoot talks about the pressure he has been under, and what he has gone through since he was charged in november. Start somewhere fresh the process of picking a juror in the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is wrapping up for the day. Jury selection began this morning with a group of about 200 people filling out questionnaires. Tsarnaev was in the courthouse to face that group for the first time. Prosecutors say theyre seeking the Death Penalty is tsarnaev is convicted, which means they must seat whats known as a death eligible jury. We try to produce a jury that can fairly and impartially render a verdict and give a punishment that considers all options, including the Death Penalty and life without parole. Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty in the bombing attacks, which killed three people and injured more than 250 others. This phase of the highprofile trial, the jury selection, is expected to take several weeks. Nbcs justice correspondent, Pete Williams joins us now from boston with more. Several weeks . Is that an underestimate of the time . What do you think, pete . Well it comes from the judge himself, doreen. So its probably a pretty good guess. But everything about this jury Selection Process is jumbosized, because this is a Death Penalty case. One number says it all. 3,000. Thats the number of people in the boston area who have been put on notice with a summons that they could be potential jurors. As you said they have been coming into the courthouse a bit at a time to get a lecture from the judge on the importance of jury service, and more to the point, to fill out a long questionnaire. 100 separate questions about their likes, dislikes beliefs, potential problems. The lawyers and the judge will use that to start to winnow it down, and then get to the process where they start asking questions to the individual jurors. And you put all that together and the judge says it could take up to three weeks before they get to the Opening Statements on january 26. And its all because this is a Death Penalty case. So the judge said they want a fair and impartial jury fair and impartial about the facts. He says it doesnt matter if you know something about the bombing trial. The question is can you put it aside and judge the case solely based on the evidence. A pretty standard lecture at the beginning of every trial. But because of the Death Penalty, that also factors in. And pete the defendant was in the courtroom today. Can you talk a little bit about his demeanor . Right. He was pretty nondescript today. None of the sort of cockiness we have seen in the past. Now, that may be because none of his family members were here and he realizes this is all potentially somewhere in there are 18 people 12 jurors and 6 alternates who will decide his fate. So he did stand up when the judge asked him to stand up. The defense lawyer stood up the prosecutor stood up. One of the questions is do you know any of these people. But he didnt smile much. He just sort of looked down or looked at the judge throughout most of the proceedings. All right. Thats Pete Williams nbc justice correspondent, live from boston. Thanks for talking with us tonight, pete. The other boston bombing suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev is buried in an unmarked grave at a Muslim Cemetery in doslo, virginia. He was killed during a gun battle with police. Locals were afraid it would draw unwanted attention. We have reached out to the Caroline CountySheriffs Office to see if there have been incidents and they said there have not been problems or issues at that cemetery. We invite you to stay with us for more coverage. Pete will have more from the courthouse on nbc nightly news at 7 00. Doug joins us now on the eve of some weather. How far away are we talking . That snow will be here by about 12 hours from now, right during the morning rush. A lot of people getting out around 5 00 a. M. 6 00 a. M. 7 00. Thats when the snow is coming down and its really bad timing and the kind of storm were talking about, early tomorrow morning. Now, temperatures theyre on the cold side. Yesterday, a high of 67. Were now at 36 degrees. Winds out of the northwest at 14 miles per hour. Our wind chill now at the airport, a cool 28 degrees. But take a look at the temperatures. Down to 32 in luray. 28 in gaithersburg. 29 in martinsburg. Were already below freezing in many locations and i do think that will allow the snow to stick very quickly. Nothing on the radar right now. Once again. Were going to wait about 12 hours to see it. Its back towards the west back towards iowa into portions of illinois coming through the chicagoland area over the next couple hours. That whole system making its way our way, its a clipper system and most of the time these clippers dont have a lot of moisture. Thats going to be the case with this one. But there is enough and because of the timing that Winter Weather advisory in effect from 4 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning until 1 00 tomorrow afternoon. Prince william county, Fairfax CountyPrince Georges County and everybody west those are the areas we expect to see the best chance for accumulating snowfall. How much are we going to see here . Well again, snow moderate at times. 1 to 2 inches in some areas. It will be a fine and powdery snow. Youll be able to brush it rather than shovel it. It will be a few spots in the morning. I think even the roads, secondary roads, will get covered by some of this snow. Well take you through the next couple hours. Here is future weather. I mentioned 5 00 a. M. Theres the radar, theres the snow coming through Loudoun County manassas coming back through warrenton and culpeper in through the d. C. Metro area and just about everywhere else around 7 00. Notice fredericksburg Lexington ParkSaint Marys County in the northern neck. Not a lot down here and i dont expect there to be much even around 9 00 a. M. Youre still seeing the snow around the region by around noon it does start to break up a bit. We will still see scattered showers and scattered flurries throughout the day. How much will we see . First off, we know its going to be cold. 25 overnight tonight in d. C. 21 in gaithersburg. 20 in martinsburg. That sets the stage for that snowfall. Heres your forecast as far as snow is concerned. A dusting down to the south. Fredericksburg around leonardtown, chesapeake beach. But back to the west about half inch to an inch around warrenton and d. C. 1 to 2 inches to the north and west around Winchester Fredericksburg Martinsburg and hagerstown. The area thats going to see the most Garrett County which could get 2 to 3 inches maybe more. And there may be a few more areas that see a little more than 2. Around lovettsville or mt. Airy. A little more than 1 around the montgomery area here. So about a half inch to inch for most of us but its coming during the hours of rush hour. Next couple days its not the snow that i think is the big story here. Its the cold. 28 on wednesday, 24 for a high on thursday. Were talking very cold temperatures wind chills in the teens and maybe even negative numbers early thursday morning. And we stay on the cold side as we make our way through the weekend. We told you much earlier, about a month ago, we would be talking about cold january. Julie carey joins us live from the courthouse in richmond with a look at how the sentencing could play out. Julie . Reporter doreen tomorrow as he enters this courthouse for his sentencing hearing, it may be the last day for a long time Bob Mcdonnell is truly a free man. Even some of his strongest supporters fear his foe tomorrow as he returns tore sentencing he will make a final plea to the judge. His attorneys have asked he be allowed to do Extensive Community service in lieu of prison time. Prosecutors say a 10 to 12year sentence is appropriate. I have never seen one of my friends get jail time and ive never seen someone get jail time who honestly did not believe he did anything wrong. Reporter Fairfax County delegate considers Bob Mcdonnell a close friend and mentor. He wrote one of the 440 letters to the judge seeking leniency for the once rising political star. One of the most wonderful guys i know. I mean ive met a lot of people in my 21 years. Reporter but he is a defense lawyer himself and even he concedes his friend will likely get prison time. He just hopes its at the lower end of the scale. To my best reasonable Case Scenario the judge lowers it from 10 years to 5 years and lets him stay out on appeal. That will be a huge victory tomorrow. Reporter tomorrows hearing will begin with mcdonnells lawyers making the case for why the 5 to 10 year sentencing guidelines are an incorrect calculation. The judge will rule on that before hearing from witnesses and giving the sentence. Former prosecutor no white collar defense attorney chuck james also believes prison time is nearly inevitable. I would say the odds of him not spending a significant period of time in prison is very, very low indeed. Reporter so for thor governor mcdonnell is sentenced tomorrow will he leave in handcuffs . Ill have answers on that at 6 00. Julie carey, news4. Hugs and high fives in the cowboys owners box last night. Did you see it they were from chris christie. How the new jersey governor responded to critics today. And are people potentially paying more at the grocery store. The proposal no apologies tonight from new Jersey Governor Chris Christie after he was seen celebrating the Dallas Cowboys latest playoff victory. He says critics are just jealous of the success of the team that its having this year. Cameras captured christie highfiving and bear hugging cowboys owner jerry jones as his team clinched the win over the lions. Good game yesterday. Christie is a lifelong cowboys fan. He takes some heat for that from people who say he should be rooting for his states preferred sports teams. Christie says hes not worried about the politics of just how this looks. When the cowboys are losing the last three seasons, not to make the playoffs there is nobody getting on social media giving me a hard time being a cowboys fan. So we all know what this is about. I dont think he really knows the level of venom that he is stirring up with eagles fans. I wouldnt vote for him even if he was an eagles fan. So its hard for me to say. Christie says he hopes to go to every game of the cowboys playoff run. The team is undefeated in games hes attended. Maybe hes a charm there. Maybe we havent seen the last of those kinds of pictures. As for the redskins they still have an open position at defensive coordinator. Dianna russini joins us with the latest on that search. Who is the governor supposed to root for, the jets and giants stink so hes got to go with the cowboys. But the redskins guys a new year means lots of change. The priority though is finding a new defensive coordinator. Last night, owner Dan Snyder Bruce allen and jay gruden met to begin going over who they want to take a look at in the nfl, and maybe even look to fill that void with one of their own. So first up is raheem morris, who is currently the redskins defensive backs coach. A position he has held since 2012. Morris has experience from tampa bay. Sources tell me morris is getting a long hard look by the redskins front office. Also phillips is getting a very strong look. Phillips a former broncos bill and cowboys head coach, lots of experience there. There is a Family Connection to the redskins. His son, wes, is the tight ends coach for the burgundy and gold. Also ed donatell the 49ers defensive backs coach, and defensive coordinator before with the packers and falcons. And another hot name San Diego Chargers linebacker coach, joe barry. Hes doing a phenomenal job in san diego. He was the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions when they went 06. Not so good. But cant blame it on him. The interview process starts tomorrow beginning with barry, who we were just phillips will meet with the team thursday. Expect the redskins to move quickly on this decision. Guys . Thanks di. Start somewhere fresh Winter Weather is coming and its coming soon. And it could be ugly tomorrow morning. Yeah. Doug is in Weather Center with an update. Doug . Yeah i think it will be kind of ugly here. Once again, its all about the timing with this storm. This is a saturday sunday storm. No big deal and pretty snow coming down. But this is happening during rush hour. Thats why were going to see some problems. Take a look at the numbers outside first off here. Were looking at that temperature that currently is in the 30s. 36 degrees right now. And look at the numbers around the rest of the region. 30 in rockville. 27 in gaithersburg. 32 in bowie and 34 in the huntingtown area. Wind chills already in the teens and lower 20s. So the cold air is here. So anything that falls is going to be able to stick. Not just on the cars but on the roadways too, especially those secondary roads. Nothing in our region just yet. The storm itself is a little clipper system. Again, its a very small storm. But the track its going to take right down to our south right across our area and then back out to sea. Thats why were going to have snow from this event. But some areas may not see much at all. Thats why we have a Winter Weather advisory. Notice who is in this. Warrenton, leesburg washington annapolis, frederick to the north and west. But fredericksburg waldorf, towards the rest of Southern Maryland you are not under any kind of Winter Weather advisory. And thats because youre only going to see the chance for some light snow some flurries possible. Doubt youll see any accumulation. Snow moderate at times. 1 to 2 inches from d. C. Back to the north and west. D. C. More like an inch, maybe two. This is a fine and powdery snow. On the highways i think well be okay. The cars are going to go by and youll blow that snow off to the side. But the secondary roads are going to see the snow starting early. So it will be there. Afternoon, we see flurries. Temperatures 32 to about 40 degrees but with a little breeze. Wind chills in the 20s all day long. And then we get really cold. 28 on wednesday. 24 on thursday. But were not just talking about the temperatures. You mentioned the wind chills guys. And were talking about winds, gusting upwards of 30 miles per hour. So were talking dangerously cold air. Wind chills subzero early thursday morning. I think those wind chills will be between 0 and minus 5 on thursday morning. So yeah for sure the coldest air we have seen so far. We rebound a little but were still well below average as we head toward the weekend. One more time well have that forecast for how much snow you can expect in your area coming up at around 6 15. Thank you, doug. Thank you, doug. Maybe all this Weather Forecast has you wondering what you can do to protect your home. Our Team Coverage continues now with consumer reporter erika gonzales. There are preps you can still make tonight, especially because this is going to be a weeklong event, in order to prevent serious damage to your home. Lets start first with a big one. That freezing pipe problem. Frozen pipes can cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage in just a couple of minutes. And thats because water expands as it freezes, placing lots of pressure on those pipes. And that pressure can cause the pipe to break. So d. C. Water suggests during this freezing period identify any pipes that might be at risk like pipes along the outside walls, crawl spaces and at particulars, to let warm air circulate around your pipes, open the cabinet doors, like the one below your kitchen sink and vanity doors near the pipes.
