To convince voters to believe in him. Now he faces a similar test on the window. Jurors that he is telling the truth and not johnny williams, the star prosecution witness. Prosecutors allege he took hundreds of thousands of the in gifts and loans in exchange for nn in his testimony so far today Bob Mcdonnell touched on that just briefly. He recalled an incident in 2009 that occurred the morning after he was elected governor. He got up early, elated. Told his wife he had to make some calls. She was not so happy. Testified mcdonnell. She was yelling at me about something. It clearly exhibited some stress of what lay ahead for her in her new role as first lady. Now before Bob Mcdonnell took the stand the defense team laid the groundwork for his testimony by calling several character witnesses to testify. Two of his closest friends in life. Juan priest from notre dame university. His former college roommate, the reverend timothy s. And investigators turned to him to talk about Bob Mcdonnells character. Testified timothy scully, hes never aired from the truth to my knowledge. He embodied great moral strength and strength of character. Bob mcdonnell continues on the stand at this hour and its expected his testimony will last not one, not two, probably several days maybe until the end of the week. Not far from the pet worth station on Georgia Avenue in northwest. More on the attacker tonight. Reporter i know a veteran Police Officer who over the years has seen all sorts of trouble in our city. He described what happened here as bad. He says it is important that they find the guy who did it. Hes wearing a baseball style shirt with burgundy color sleeves and wanted for questioning about a rape. Hes wanted for questioning about a robbery. It happened in the pet worth p section of our city. A place thats undergone an explosion of development. New buildings, new stores, new hopes. We thats very unfortunately that this happened. Reporter the scene, a new apartment build called the three tree flats. Police sources tell the story this way. It was sunday night about 8 00. A man somehow manages to get inside this building. He then forces his way into the apartment of a young woman, where he rapes her and robs hero and this security picture you can see a man holding a large bag. I cant believe Something Like that happened in this building. This is said to be a secure place. You need a key fob like this to get into the building. You need a key fob like this just to get on the elevator. So how did this guy inside . But this is supposed to be a secure building isnt it . There is a key fob to get in right here. And to use the elevator. Correct. That means this guy did that. That means somebody had to let him on. Now lets take a another look at the guy they want to talk to here. If you know him, if you know anything about this case, police want to hear from you. Now the management here sent out a letter to the residents. It appears to be missing some things. More on that coming up at 6 00. Live in northwest, pat collins, news4. It took four months to track him down and tonight park police say they have the man who sexual assaulted a woman on a particular trail. That attack happened in april in georgetown. The victim was walking near the water front when she says a man forced her up the capitol crescent trail and onto the gloefr arch bold trail. He sexual assaulted her and ran off. Christopher wallace was arrested over the weekend on an unrelated Outstanding Bench warrant. Investigators say hes the prime suspect in this has a tattoo just like the one that was described by the victim. Now to aq w Trayvon Martins mother spoke about the case. She says this is all too familiar. Its just horrible how he was treated. When i seen the pictures he wasnt even covered up. And the least they could have done was cover up the body. I mean that is the at least they could have done at that moment. She goes on to say she doesnt agree with the violent protests, but says people have a right to demonstrate. And even with the attorney general in town there tonight t feeling among some in ferguson is that no real action will happen. Protesters want charges against that officer and as nbcs craig melvin tells us now they want it to happen soon. Reporter the focus here are a bit anxious. I think that is the best way to describe how they feel about the attorney generals visit. A lot of folks we talked to over the past few days, they have been fairly unanimous in wanting one thing, the protesters at least that we talked to. They want charges filed, they want ab indictment filed against the officer responsible for the shooting here. There is as you have been reporting here a lot of focus on the ground have been reporting as well there is, shall we say a general distrust of the system here in ferguson. A lot of folks have been calling of course on the federal investigation. There are a lots of folks clambering for that to happen. So i think a lot of people are very anxious to hear what the attorney general says. We dont know whether he is going to be making himself available to the media at some point. But a lot of people are listening and waiting to hear from eric holder about the federal investigation and the next steps moving forward here in ferguson. Craig melvin and our coverage of the turmoil doesnt stop here. At 5 30 Mark Segraves explains how there are similarities between ferguson and the Mount Pleasant riots in the district back in 1991. The battle over gay marriage in virginia, late this average the u. S. Supreme court decided to put marriages on hold in the commonwealth. Now live following the story from arlington and the county courthouse there. Reporter there was anticipation that there would be a partilike atmosphere here the arlington courthouse tomorrow morning. A room was set aside for nothing but same sex marriage ceremonies. And now all those plans have been put on hold. Linda coffman and Leann Roselle were married in washington d. C. Four years ago but virginia doesnt recognize them as a married couple and now the u. S. Supreme court had put the matter on hold. I its just a matter of time. Its sad to have to wait but the trajectory has been set. I agree. I think this time virginia has an opportunity to be on along on the right side of history. And im really looking forward to that. It may take the Supreme Court to straighten it all out but its clear everybody has the right to marry someone they love. Its time for the Supreme Court to resolve this issue once and for all so our gay and lesbian citizens dontnn washington opposes same sex marriage. I think it is a good move on part of the Supreme Court. They have essentially kept things in check. Weve seen in some cases like utah before the Supreme Court was able to put a hold into a stay in effect, you had people getting married. There was lake this mayhem where sort of this rush to the courthouse and then it had to be stopped. Reporter so there will be no rush to the courthouse here in Arlington County or Fairfax County or the city hall in alexandr alexandria. And there is disappointment tonight in virginias Gay Community and among its supporters throughout the country. However, people are beginning to realize that if this case goes to the u. S. Supreme court and is decided on the merits, it could give clarity to this controversy for the first time. That is the latest live in Arlington County virginia. Continuing to tack heavy rain over fairfax. The district continuing to see more of a steady lighter rain, a soaking rain. coming to an end 7 30 8 00 p. M. D. C. s police chief is drawing similarities between ferguson and here in washington twenty years ago. In 1991 Mount Pleasant erupted in violence. A and. Kathy lanier was a rookie cop back in 1991 when another rookie cop shot a man in Mount Pleasanting resulting in several days of the rioting in the capital. There are similarities between the two incidents. There is never any one thing that can cause a explosion of emotion like this. So it is a combination of a lot of things. As the clashes between police and protesters in ferguson continue, d. C. Police which i have chief lanier talks. We didnt have a Good Relationship largely because of the misunderstanding and a lack of cultural understanding. And like in ferguson today t d. C. Police in 1991 was not reflective of the racial makeup of the community. Language barriers. We didnt get information out quickly enough. And there was a lot of things. She didnt want to critique the ferguson response specifically but she did address some concerns that have risen from the death of Michael Brown and the response. On a question whether its ever appropriate for a Police Officer to shot an unarmed person she says yes. To say you could never shoot an unarmed person, that would be inaccurate. Because weve had whgcers killed by inarmed pu eed person other individuals killed by unarmed persons. Wearing name tags. I think absence leads to lack of transparence and lake of relationship. And whats been described as police using military style gear. This is police equipment. A lot of what i see being classified as military gear isv Standard Police equipment for decades. But the chief cautions. I think it is reserved for use typically in extremely high risk, high threat situations. Using it in a demonstration0l a protest is extremely unusual. Now the d. C. Police department had changed dramatically since the Mount Pleasant riot with a far more diverse force. The mayor has made outreach to minorities a mainstay in her administration. Coming up we hear talks about the positive results that came out of the Mount Pleasant riots. Just a few days till school. And when they head back they are going to see a few new cases and that district will having about 50 students who are unaccompanied minors. The children are here in the United States without their parents and the district is ready to help them. We have a really thorough intake process. We do everything we can to make sure they are well taken care of and their needs are met and we are prepared to deal with whatever comes our way. And the number of students who are unaccompanied minors could grow. Last year there were 107. Back to school time means more than just buying school supplies. It is a good time for patients to take their kids to the doctor. If you havent already done it over the summer. Especially true in maryland. Starting this school year some students will be required to get new vaccinations. The hope is parents will do a better job staying on top of childrens immunizations. The dreaded trip to the doctors office. Deandre sams is one of the kids scram toblg make sure he has his shots in time for the school year. Because if incoming students are missing even one vaccination they may not be able to start class. This time of year we have a lot of parents rushing to get children in before school starts. And if you live in maryland you better pay extra attention because the Maryland Department of health and mental hiygiene i requiring new vaccinations for some students. Incoming kindergarteners mustg now have two chickenpox or varicella shots before school this fall. And others need a booster shot and the meningitis vaccine. Virginia has one new requirement. Incoming sixth graders now need that tdapp booster as well. We found a lot of the adolescents were not adequately immunized. Because parents remember to bring kids in when they are first starting schools but sometimes dont remember they need these booster doses when they get older. Childrens National Health system says maryland and virginias requirements are in line with national recommendations. D. C. Has similar requirements already. While deandre puts on a brave face for his shots he knows there is a good reason for them. So you can be healthy. Thats right. There are lots of clinics all over our region that offer the vaccines for free. To find out more go to our website m nbcwashington. Com.
