Whurs troy johnson is here with todays talk around town. Troy, many africanamerican parents say theyve had the talk with the the talk with their children of how to handle police. How are people framing the conversation now in the wake of these shootings . I remember my parents sitting me down. I sat down with my son at the same time. The Conversation Centers around how to engage police in these situations, make sure that its constructive and make sure that you come out safe, primarily. But people are frustrated about having to have that conversation in these discussions lately, because theyre optimistic that their kids can handle themselves if theyre in an encounter with a Police Officer, but in the back of their minds, theres a palpable feeling that something could go wrong and they would love, really, not to have to have that kind of fear. Yesterday in dallas he said you cant break the cycle of mistrust between the police and community unless both sides understand the others experience. How well do your listeners think parents are doing in helping youngsters understand the problems that police are having . The problems theyre having out there . So not respecting the Police Officer is not going to get you respected yourself. And the police also need to understand to respect us even if we arent being respectful, because people dont understand that it goes both ways nowadays. And his mother very happy and proud that some of the things she has talked about have sunk in. Shes hopeful, along with other people i have talked to, that some of that is engrained in the way that officers are trained in the future. It could save some lives. Interesting to know how people are responding to the Dallas Police chief. Dave brown has been front and center, gotten a lot of attention and a what do your listeners think about him and the tone he struck . Theyre impressed by chief brown even if its just for invoking the words of stevie wonder. I certainly appreciated that. People tell me its a prime example of what might be missing. In these miscommunications between police and young black men, for example. You get a sense of who he is from what he talked about in that speech. The music that he loves, where he comes from, his background, his Life Experiences and all of that is relatable to a lot of people. So, listeners were telling me there needs to be more dialogue on both sides on how to interact, how to get a better understanding of each other. And they think that will go a long, long way in improving the way police and communities interact. Troy johnson, thank you, troy. Barbara . History in the making .
