General manager and metros board chair to give us an update in just a few minutes. Adam, how long do you expect this rush hour kind of confusion that we saw this morning to last into the evening rush hour . Reporter well, jim, i think this is the new normal for the foreseeable future. Right now, weve got lots of people trying to figure out their way, trying to figure out what to do on the metro station. For the next year, were going to go through these stages piece by piece. Lets listen to metros general manager and metros board chair. Theyre coming to the podium right now. Okay. Good afternoon, everyone. Im here joined with our general manager. Im jack evans, the chairman of the board of metro. We wanted to give you an update on our third day, but our first weekday of our safetrack system, repairs for background. Were doing this because for the last 15 years there hasnt been the maintenance thats necessary to keep the system in top shape. If anything, the lack of maintenance over the last 15 years has left the system in a real difficult situation. It all stems from, as you know, the fundamental flaw of the twotrack system. How do you get to is system to make the repairs and the upgrades that are necessary . Paul came forward with a plan, sa safetrack, which the board has endorsed to take 15 different surges around the metro system and make the repairs that are necessary. We started this on saturday. As you know, saturday is the first weekend day we did not have Late Night Service af after midnight. Im pleased to report on the good side that things went overall pretty well. We didnt have anybody injured on the system today, which is a good thing. Trains for the most part worked. I think we had one train that broke down, but other than that it worked. People pretty much listened and really tried to accommodate the situation. Now, i want to stress one thing. Today is a monday. Generally on mondays it is one of our lowest riding days. People work like a snowstorm in many ways. The snowstorm was coming and people accommodated that. But the day after the first day, people kind of want to return to normal. If that were to happen or does happen tomorrow and wednesday, we could have serious overcrowding. I want to urge everyone whatever you did today do tomorrow, do wednesday, do for the duration of this surge because it worked okay today. But if everybody surges are going to have a problem. Whatever you did, im stressing do it again. We should be able to get through this first surge with the level of inconvenience that we now have. Again, let me stress this is an essential component of fixing our system. Our system was broken, and the plan we have in place, as difficult as it is, as inconvenient as it is, is absolutely crucial to get metro back to where we want it to be. At the end of the year, do not expect a brandnew system. The system will look pretty much as it does right now. Itll be a safer system, and we hope a more reliable system. But it wont look a whole lot different, and we have a long way to go to continue to make our system the system we want it to be. With that, let me turn to paul. He may have some comments. Then well open the floor to i just want to thank the riders obviously for heeding the warning and making it work fairly well. We were at the maximum of what we could move this morning, the peak period. If anything changes, well adjust that. I want to thank the local jurisdictions again. I think they did a fantastic job stepping up to the plate, providing us personnel and different ways for people to get around. With that, well be glad to take any questions. [ inaudible ]. Sure. Exactly, right, tom. During the rush hour, it worked well at boston. As rush hour passed, people could see the other trains coming in. They werent packed. They would try to get together tomorrow to get on top of that. [ inaudible ]. I think it is. I think the total system was only down 1 , so that means people in that area adjusted, which is great. I think were right at that level during the peak period. If that goes back down, thats not a good thing, i think, for those customers. There you have metros gm and board chair giving metro on this day one of safetrack a passing grade, but they say brace yourselves. Monday could be lighter than tuesday. Jack evans compared it to the day after snowstorm. We could see much higher traffic tomorrow. Jack evans says what you did today do tomorrow and we should be in good shape. Dont let your guard down because this is a very long project. Jack evans also likes to subsystsu sub systems across the country right now, all of them have problems. Safetrack was not without problems because of single tracking between boston and east falls church. The trains were so packed our camera barely made it on board. Its normally about 1 3 of this.
