Were learning more about the copilot now blamed for the crash. That third american is 37yearold robert oliver. Oliver was born in barcelona to American Parents and has american sit senship. He worked for a spanish clothing designer and leafs behind a wife and two children weve learned. Were getting a more detailed picture of the copilot of the flight who a prosecutor blamed this morning for intentionally crashing the plane. 27yearold Andreas Lubitz had been a copilot for just 18 months but he obtained a gliders pilots license as a teenager and joined lufthansa in 2008 to begin training to become a commercial pilot. He seemed to be enjoying his job when he visited the club last fall. Investigators are looking at everything from possible family issues to financial trouble, possible motives for the crash. As of now, nothing stands out as a clear reason for lubitz to take down that plane. At the live desk Scott Mcfarlane. Weve got new insight on the two local victim who is died in that flight and how they impacted their community here in virginia. News4s Kristin Wright has more from the selke familys church in manassas. Reporter parishioners at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in manassas feel like theyve lost two members of their family. The selkes have been going to church here for more than 20 years since emily was a baby. Her mother yvonne was active for a long time with the childrens programs. Emily sang in the choir. We spent some time with the selkes pastor today. He is even having a difficult time with all of this. He hopes to speak with mr. Selke soon and here are the words of comfort he plans to give him. Martese johnson appeared in court this morning on charges of public intoxication and obstruction of justice. But both sides in the case asked for a delay, allowing time for state police to complete an investigation. Johnsons arrest touched off a controversy. Police northern plainsed an arrest after a disabled veteran was carjacked and shot. It was last november when the 65yearold was robbed and carjacked by two men, then one of the men shot him. Is expected to serve the remainder of his prison sentence at a Halfway House in our area. The former illinois congressman was released from a federal prison in alabama today after serving more than half of a 30month sentence. This is file video of jackson. I think some of the things he said in the email were inappropriate and i was uncomfortable with it. I think it shows a lack of taste and a lack of restraint and its just not really acceptable to be happening on this campus. It was the right decision for him not to come back but i also think that that punishment might have been thought of too quickly. The fire has now gone to seven alarms and at least two people are in Critical Condition and others are being treated at the scene. Weve got troubling new details on the breaking news you saw on our nbc washington app. The cockpit conversation went from cordial to curt then the copilot of the germanwings jet barricaded himself inside the cockpit and deliberately crashed the plane into the french alps. In a split second all 150 people on board were killed including a mother and daughter from our area. Thats the horrific picture painted by the audio recording recovered at the scene of the crash. Right now investigators are poring through every dae death tail of the copilots life to find a motive. And for reasons they have not explained they are focusing on the personal rather than political. The crash raises new questions about airline safety. So did the safeguards put in place to protect the crew contribute to the disaster . Steve handelsmans digging into this part of the story for us today. Reporter experts say this kind of a tragedy is less likely on airliners flying in america. U. S. Rules require a noalone zone in the cockpit. Landmark. Reporter a Flight Attendant must go to the flight deck anytime one of the two pilots leaves. One person is dead and several others injured after powerful storms and tornados tore through state last night. Jay gray reports from moore, oklahoma, where residents are forced to pick up the pieces once again just two years after a tornado wreaked havoc across their town. Reporter the damage is severe and widespread. Tornado on the ground. Reporter after a string of tornadoes unleashed their fury across the oklahoma plains. Get it on video. Reporter at least one of those twisters following an alltoofamiliar path through the city of moore. This is basically deja vu all over again. Fortunately for us this was not a major occurrence like the last one was. Reporter the last one was a massive f5 tornado that killed 24 injured dozens and left this community in ruins. This time while the damage is intense, everyone in moore survived and a day later many are seeing signs of hope and recovery here. Weve been down this road before. We know what to do. Reporter the most Severe Damage came as a powerful twister ripped through the tulsa suburb of sand springs. Didnt just hit the ground and moved. It was jumping around. Reporter shattering this community of mobile homes, killing one of the residents inside. A few miles away, though somehow there were no serious injuries when this gymnastic studio collapsed with 60 to 70 people inside. It is a miracle. God was watching over aim high academy and every single one of the kids in this building last night. Reporter now thousands are moving back into the areas hardest hit. People are survivors here. Were very resilient and were going to continue to be. Reporter a resilience and strength again, being pushed to its limits here. A 3yearold child is dead in virginia after a train hit the car driven by the father. This happened along a rural Mountain Road near elliston in Montgomery County between roanoke and blacksburg. The father and two other children are being treated for serious injuries. The crossing was marked with signs but has no lights no crossing gate. They risked their own lives and personal safety to help communities and businesses. This afternoon, heros from the Fairfax County police fire and rescue and the shall haves department are passing out honors for their extraordinary efforts. At least one person is dead this afternoon after semi truck collided with an overpass on a texas interstate. The rig was too high to clear part of that overpass and as you see hit a beam causing parts of the overpass to collapse onto moving traffic. Dartmouth students are accused of physically branding new members as an oldtime rampk rancher might have branded cattle leaving a lasting mark or scar on the skin. They did that part part of our initiation for our fraternity but it wasnt a real brand but you were blindfolded and they had a piece of dry ice and they put it on your leg, then they had a branding iron and a piece of meat so you smelled your flesh burning.
