Roads tomorrow. We start with the current temperatures 20 degrees as you mentioned, cold with the windchill of 11 5 to 15 degrees generally most neighborhoodsno but again, whats important is the air is cold enough that that when this system comes in it will be providing us with snow and i think several inches too. Because of that, we have a Winter Weather advisory everybody in the purple, areas down to the south including areas of Southern Maryland. Winter weather advisories more snow several inches expected Garrett County and allegheny off to the west. We start as snow, well get the sleet then the freezing rain. That means Road Conditions could become icy. Yes, that snow will accumulate coming down at a pretty good clip at times and that means reducing the visibility on area roads. I think our big trouble will be after 2 00, 3 00 tomorrow. The radar, quiet. The storm system getting its act together far to the south and west. You can see it here around areas of oklahoma and around areas of southern missouri where snow and areas of rain down there, but lots of moisture will be coming into this system and warm air as well. So thats why were going to see the switchover i think, all rain by midnight. Prior to that 11 00 a. M. Through 2 00 p. M. 3 00 p. M. Tomorrow real problems. Ill take you through a time line hour by hour coming up in a couple minutes, show you what your neighborhood can expect. V. J. Thanks. You know this very time last year i was in russia covering the winter olympic games. Just checked my weather app, sochi is a good 22 degrees warmer than we are right now, so just putting it in perspective. Who would have thought that for us here . We are even colder today than in m places in alaska too. Despite our frigid temperatures life must go on. We have to get out and about, take care of things that means walking the dog, a fast walk in many cases and shopping still has to be done too. Its freezing. I cant get him to go out here quick enough. Im surprised at how many people come out with not heavy coats on, no hats, no gloves, no scarves. They just come out with anything. I even see people with shorts on. Not surprisingly plenty of room at the outdoor seating areas today. Repairs are complete and this afternoon all lanes are back open on washington boulevard in arlington here. A water main broke near buchanon street yesterday around noon. One lane closed in both directions. Right now the water is back on and crews have cleared the area. Meanwhile, the frigid temperatures still are causing problems for metro. Lets go to molette green at Lenphant Plaza today. We have incredible video thats on our nbc washington facebook page. A lot of delays right, mollett . Reporter yeah. There have been problems th the day on the system and in this cold weather, metro tells me that you can expect that problems could pop up. Theres a pepco work truck right behind me still working here. Just a short bit ago a d. C. Water crew left the scene, both working with metro crews to try to fix the powerrelated problem here at Lenphant Plaza. As it gets colder with more bad weather on the way, metro passengers seem to get more frustrated. In this bitter cold you dress in layers especially if you are waiting on a bus or a train or walking to and from school like these d. C. School students. But for metro passengers each day seems to bring the unexpected. Two cracked rails left orange and silver line trains sitting on the tracks during the height of the morning commute. And at Lenphant Plaza, a power outage from this morning shut down the ninth and d street entrance to riders. Not much not sure with the sign. Would have been a lot easier. You try to leave early, leaving even earlier and even earlier. Myself i just dont understand the whole o process. Seem like they dont design the system to be an allweather system. Its like they built it for it to be in miami versus for it to be in washington, d. C. With the climate going on. Reporter now, we can tell you that this entrance here at ninth and d reopened just before 2 00 this afternoon. Although work crews remained at the scene. Coming up tonight at 5 00 what exactly went wrong here and what passengers did about it. Im molette green, live at Lenphant Plaza, back to you. Thanks mollett. We get ready for the next system warming temperatures allowing us to transition from snow to rain but not all good because that rain i think will wash a lot of chemicals off the road so that as we get into the second half of the weekend it may cause some issues. But for a period of time during the storm, i do think that roads could become treacherous, especially after 2 00 on saturday. The snow that starts out it will be accumulating very quickly, an inch per hour. Then well see the freezing rain, the sleet start to mix in with the storm and that means icy conditions by evening. So snow to ice, were talking around 4 00 5 00 p. M. On saturday where roads could just be terrible. Were at 21 degrees right now. The windchill temperature 11 degrees. Weve got sunshine. But that system its getting its act together quickly. Take a look at radar right now, not much going on here. As i open it up to show you, that great big old l, oklahoma around areas of missouri and arkansas where theres a lot of moisture thats going to start coming in with the storm system. What that means for us is the potential to get several inches of snow, to get a little bit of ice on top of that snow before we change over the r lets talk about your future weather, as i mentioned, the snow comes in from west to east and it is these arias across western maryland around cumberland and hagerstown that could see the highest amounts of snow in this system. Here it is at noontime right around d. C. Starting by 2 00 widespread snow throughout the area. The pink thats the freezing rain and there will be a little bit of sleet, too, coming into the storm system by around 1 00 2 00 i think. By 4 00 with the warmer air starting to mix into the storm system thats going to allow us to have not just snow by 5 00 and 6 00 but freezing rain mixing in. Thats whats going to make conditions on area roads not very good at all. So if you can get it done early in the day before 10 00, 11 00 a. M. Please do. By 10 00 p. M. Shgt by midnight i think its all rain for the system and it will start to head out and race out, in fact by sunday morning. 6 00a. M. 7 00 a. M. Most of the rain will be shutting off making its way east of the area. Heres a look at the snowfall amounts that were forecasting before we switched over to the freezing rain. 3 to 6 inches hagerstown frederick, leesburg, and right into d. C. As much as 3 to 6. Well be zooming in a little tighter on this map, a little later in the newscast. 1 to 3 inches annapolis, waldorf, fredericksburg a light coating across arias of extreme Southern Maryland leonardtown and the northern neck. Snow develops early, some of it heavy, 28 to 36 the temperature range. Ice will be the big issue with this storm system as we get into the evening hours. And storm team 4 is tracking more Winter Weather this weekend. Sfler. Thats right. Were looking at the latest information and the changeover times from snow freezing rain too, to all rain. Thats coming up. And its true. Sp right now first at 4, frozen over and more snow on the way. Get ready. A winter storm warning in effect starting tomorrow. And it could bring snow and freezing rain. Team coverage continues now with storm team 4. Veronica i guess if were getting more snow and ice, better to get it on the weekend. Exactly. If you have to drive around stressing to folks you have tonight to get out, tomorrow morning. In fact i think up until about 10 00 a. M. Or 11 00 a. M. To get things done. After that, you want to be inside because when the snow starts to fall, a lot of moisture the storm system has to work with. That snow will be coming down at a pretty good rate and it will accumulate very quickly. Well have the snowfall totals coming up in just a bit. Out there right now, it is cold and even tomorrow morning, yes, the winds have really eased up and will continue to do so as we head into your saturday morning. This is 7 00 a. M. Saturday. What it will feel like throughout the area. Still temperatures in the Single Digits from feeling like 4 in d. C. P 3 in leesburg 4 degrees in fredericksburg so still plenty cold. A lot of cold air out there. The air temperature early in the morning just at 12 degrees, so yes, whatever is left on the sides of some of the roads certainly the secondary roads could be slick. But, again, minor issues compared to what were going to see by the afternoon. And really goes downhill after 2 00 p. M. 3 00 p. M. Tomorrow with that snow piling up quickly and with the isolator. So icy, slick conditions for your afternoon, especially Late Afternoon and evening. Yes, temperatures are going to be coming up to around 33 34 35 degrees during the evening but this is where i think well have some of the bigger issues. 495, 70 270, bethesda around areas like annandale, even savage issues after 2 00 tomorrow because this is where the snow is really going to be coming down at a pretty good rate and where the visibilities will be limited. The snow could fall at a rate of an inch per hour. Icy and slick too. I81 out around areas of 66. Issues here on area road because of the snow with more on the totals what you can expect in your area lets go to meteorologist Doug Kammerer. Yeah veronica. You mentioned warming temperatures as we move on throughout the day. If this storm was cold enough meaning everything was snow we would see well over a foot across the entire region. Thats not going to happen. Weve got warm air that will be moving into the region will start as snow then change over to ice and eventually everybody changes over the all rain. So this is what were looking at right now for the snowfall forecast. E area of most confidence is back to the north and west. Area of least confidence down to the south and east. Where were going to see that mixing te place. Heres our current thinking down to the south and east looking at those numbers around a coating to an inch leonardtown, Calvert County waldorf, 3 to 6 inches including d. C. But d. C. Im thinking more around that 3inch mark right now, and back to the west looking at 6 inches plus winchester martinsburg, hagerstown those are the areas that could see the most from this. Well continue to watch this moving on through. Let me move back down to the d. C. Et area here. Quantico waldorf, bowie, 1 to 3 before the mix. If it mixes earlier youre on the one side a little later, more likely on the 2 to 3inch side. This is something well have to watch. This map will change a little bit. Certainly when the freezing rain comes in there could be some downed limbs, maybe a handful of Power Outages to deal with. Dry for the morning so youve got the green light for the morning. For the afternoon and evening, stay off because snow and ice are fwoet going to accumulate. So get out the door early for any of you die hards who do want to exercise. Your storm team sevenday forecast great day to get out on sunday then continued cold for the most part next week dry with temperatures running below average.
