So what can we all learn from this and how do we stop Domestic Violence . Its our talk around town today. Troy is here with a little more perspective. I would imagine, troy, some of your listeners are upset after seeing the rice video. What else are they talking about regarding this case . They think a man who hits a woman like that belongs in jail, very candid comments and also upset with the nfls investigation like a lot of folks talking about this. Beyond this theyre thinking about janay rice and the victim and the family and hoping they can get past this situation in their lives. Some think this conversation is veering away from the real issues. Why . One listener i spoke to says the lack of compassion is what upsets her, the comments people are making about janay rice and this whole situation in general. Shes very disgusted by that. She says the situation is a whole lot bigger than football. This is a great time for all of us to learn about Domestic Violence and the signs because one day it could save somebody elses life. Hilda makes a great point, you know, this is a situation were all dealing with. A lot of people i talk to echo the same feeling. They feel like we should be learning more about Domestic Violence when the numbers are so sobering, every minute 20 people are victimized by a partner or spouse. That adds up to 10 million victims a year. Whr listeners tell me we cant continue to turn a blind eye to that. Thats one of the big burning questions. Everybody talks about Domestic Violence and some concerned you talk about it today and forget about it tomorrow. The people i talked to, said as painful as this conversation is, in our face right now, we need to talk about it more and about victims and have a larger support system for those trying to get out of violent relationships. I talked to sophia, who shared very personal thoughts with me about her own experience in a violent relationship. I feel people are quick to pass judgment. I dont know this woman but i feel a bond with her. Knowing unless you are in it, you cannot understand what she is going through. There is no blueprint for this and ery situation is unique and people need to put that at the forefront of this entire situation. This is the first time shes talked beyond her Close Friends to this situation. She opened up so perhaps people will have more understanding and care a bit more. At whur we try to help people understand. On our sister station xm 141, we have a conversation weekly on a program called the silent storm. Weve been doing it six years. What you can do to keep your children healthy. Doreen gensler joins us live in the studios. A quiet but muggy evening. Tomorrow, uncomfortable, sticky, steamy, stormy and what time theyll be rolling in and if youll be able to turn the ac off right now, Virginia HealthOfficials Say theyre starting to see cluster of respiratory illnesses across the state. Theyre concerned it could be the virus that has sickened hundreds of kids across the country. Doreen joins us with the latest on this story. Hi, jim, pat. There havent been any cases in northern virginia. At least 19 children have been admitted to hospitals in southern virginia. Yesterday, doctors issued this electorate across the commonwealth to warn about this evd 68 virus. Doctors say as children go back to school, is common for them to get sick this time of the year including the entara virus but this year it has sickened hundreds in the south and southeast. And nobody has died but many are being cared for while the virus goes away on its own. The focus is on children with the most severe cases and appears those with y illnesses like asthma are the ones that end up in the hospital with this thing. Symptoms can be anything from a mild cold to trouble breathing and fever and in some cases also a rash that develops. There have been no reported cases of this virus in maryland yet. D. C. Health officials didnt return our calls about this. Keep in mind, with this virus unlike measles or the flu, doctors are not required to report it and enteroviruses are pretty common and this one is rare and unusual and theyre still learning about it. There could be cases that havent been labeled as ezd68. And the most common thing is to wash your hands. No vacancy in to protect us. Here we are back to school time and a lot of kids are in close quarters again. Absolutely. I think the thing we most want to stress about this virus. You could get this virus and not feel anything more serious than cold symptoms. But if you get a cold that makes you feel like youre experiencing breathing problems, dont mess around with that. Get to an emergency room and get to a doctor right away. The worst problems are for people with asthma. Especially if you have asthma. Thanks. Appreciate it.
