Developments right now in the seconddegree murder case against George Zimmerman. The trial is now in its third week of testimony. About ten minutes ago Trayvon Martins father took the stand. The defense is presenting its case to the jury now and the screams heard on that 911 call are once again in the spotlight. Nbcs jay gray is at the courthouse in sanford, florida, where the jury heard from a parade of friends testifying on behalf of zimmerman. Reporter youre right. Its been a very busy day inside the courtroom here in sanford, florida. What i can tell you, we saw Trayvon Martins dad take the stand within the last ten or 15 minutes. Hes refuting testimony earlier from investigators. The focus in court again was today this dramatic 911 call from the night Trayvon Martin died. Investigators were called back to the witness stand to share with jurors the response Trayvon Martins father had the first time he was asked who it was screaming for help in the background of that call . Okay. And mr. Martins response . That it was not his son. I think you earlier said he put his head down or something . Yes. He was crying. He was sad. He had his head down and wiping his face with tissues. Tracey martin wiped away tears from todays testimony. I started screaming as louds i could help. George zimmerman said its his voice the night he shot and killed martin. Hes pleaded not guilty to seconddegree murder saying he acted in selfdefense. Recording was at the center of the presentation by the defense. Friends were asked the same question about the same audio recording. And gave the same answer. Yes, definitely thats georgy. I thought it was george. The voice screaming on the tape is George Zimmerman. During crossexamination the state stressed each witness is a strong supporter of zimmerman. Several have donated to his defense fund. One couple wrote a book about the incident and said they will donate the profits to zimmerman. Another brought him clothes and cooked him dinner. You would agree theres a bias there on behalf of George Zimmerman because of your friendship . Hes my very dear friend, i think of him as a son. Also during the cross [ bleep ] prosecutors played zimmermans initial call to the police the tape the state has entered into as evidence he was profiling Trayvon Martin the night the teenager was killed. You believe when he uttered the words, pardon my language [ bleep ] is just an observation . I think it was a comment he was making. About the individual he was following or chasing, correct . Its just one of several crucial decisions that ultimately will fall to the six women who could decide George Zimmermans fate. Reporter a live look back inside the courtroom. We have an objection going on but i can tell you Trayvon Martins father still on the stand during crossexamination by the state right now and what he has said during his initial testimony when he was called by the defense and, again, refuting what investigators have said on the stand, he says what he said after initially hearing that 911 call and the voice screaming for help in the background he said and im quoting here, i can tell.
