And he was with two other teenagers when he got hit in boyds, maryland. It caused long delays this evening for the Marc Brunswick line. We now know the name of the student. Its john dereggi jr. He was well liked here at Clarksburg High School. A lot of people respected him. And he passed away. An amtrak train hit the 16yearold on the tracks around 4 45 this evening. Tonight Montgomery County police tell us dereggi jr. Was walking along the tracks with two other teenagers. Now here is what is interesting. For some unknown reason, detectives tell me he was in the path of the train. The train hit him around the 15000 block of barnesville road near the boyds marc train station. Back out here live. Tonight Clarksburg High School sent out a tweet asking students to wear blue tomorrow to pay tribute to john dereggi jr. The Associated Press reports that officers have been in touch with the main suspect, and he promised them, quote, he is not going to jail. They say shannon lamb called police this morning to say there had been a shooting at the home he shared with amy prentice. Her body was found in their home. He is the main suspect. Detectives think lame have driven 300 miles to Delta State University where professor Ethan Schmidt was shot and killed in his office. The campus has been on lockdown all evening because police are still trying to find lamb. Police arent revealing how they communicated with lamb, but theyre warning people he is armed and dangerous. He spoke for more than an hour at the Prince William county fairgrounds in manassas. Court documents revealed a woman behind the wheel of a dump truck drove to a nearby construction site where she was allegedly overheard saying she thought she had hit an animal. After midnight on a friday in 2013, trey turner and his friends gathered in a parking lot. He was just standing there beside his car. Enjoying the end of summer, turner was about to begin college. But that never happened. They heard gunshots. Several of them. In this Surveillance Video obtained by the news4 iteam, you can see the crowd scatter. But what you cant see is trey turners body. You never think thats going to be the last time that youre going to see your child. But it was for turners mom. He died the next day. Two years later his pictures still line the dining room table, and she remembers what she said to the gunman at his sentencing. Thats final. Its permanent. There is nothing you can do about that. You cant say oh, i made a mistake there is no doovers. Reporter it turned out the man who shot and killed trey turner in this parking lot in clinton had a history, a criminal history. And his name is one of several dozen on a specialist kept by prosecutors. Darryl adamson had already served time on a weapons charge. And within months, while still on probation, he pleaded guilty to having a gun again and firing it in the parking lot that night. A judge sentenced a damson to 20 years in prison. It was a great win for us. The defendant ended up pleading guilty to seconddegree murder. Reporter Dorothy Ingle is the prosecutor who handled the case. She leads the Prince Georges County strategic investigation unit, the unit that handles the list, a list of known criminals with histories who have been charged with new crimes, criminals and prosecutors are now trying to lock up for life. We have about 100 cases that we are dealing with since the beginning this year. Reporter countywide . Countywide. Reporter travis evans was on the list. Convicted last year of robbing and then carjacking a man in forestville before leading police on a chase through the city. In this city you can see it. He jumps from the moving car to escape. Prosecutors said evans had a history of crime and they convinced the judge to sentence him to 78 years in prison. Larry offutt was on the list too after he robbed a Cell Phone Store in oxon hill. Court records show he had a 20year history of assault and robbery charges. The unit won a conviction and got offutt a conviction of 100 years in prison. Sometimes Defense Attorneys come up to a prosecutor and say oh, gosh, is my client being handled in the Bad Boys Club . Reporter angela started the list shortly after taking office. An eightperson team strategized the case. And we watched as they canvas crime scenes, including after a violent assault this summer in suitland. County crime records show a 40 drop in homicides in the past three years. But there is a cost, paid fulltime prosecutors are assigned to just a handful of the hundreds of cases the county must handle each year. And the county said it will need more than a Million Dollars in state emergency aid next year and each year to pay for it to target this handful of suspected criminals. We may be talking about 25 or 30 individuals who wreak havoc on our communities. And forever change the lives of people like trey turners mom. I will never get over it. Ill never have grandchildren from my son. Ill never be able to see my son get married. Reporter the naacp of prince georges says its received no complaints about this unit, but that its important only violent offenders be included.
