News4 at 11 starts now. We start tonight with that shooting that left a 17yearold dead. The suspect still on the loose. And right now police are out in force, trying to prevent more violence. News4s Jackie Bensen is live in the sterling neighborhood where all this happened. Jackie . Reporter doreen, this neighborhood is in shock tonight. There is a heavy Police Presence tonight in the pembroke town house complex there is concern that Gang Activity may have played a role in the broad daylight shooting of a High School Sophomore walking to a School Bus Stop this morning. Loudoun county sheriff mike chapman. Were look at that possibility. Were looking at many possibilities, that being one of them. Sheriff state Police Investigators worked into the evening, pursuing leads in the murder of 17yearold Danny Centeno miranda. A sophomore at Park View High School in sterling was shot multiple times as he walked from his home this morning. And witnesses told investigators they saw three young men wearing hoodies run from the scene. This teenager had gotten on the bus at an earlier stop. And i heard there were two gunshots. And i was kind of freaked out, but i kept walking, and i saw the police here, and i saw the kid lying in the floor. Reporter a number of schools in the area were on lockdown during the initial active search for the shooters. I cannot stress enough download the nbc4 app. We were getting information out there very quickly. I had friends who lived around here calling me, trying to find out what was going on. Jackee, thank you. Police are asking for help in finding a Montgomery County teenager who is autistic. Alejandro mora is 14 years old. He was last seen about four thank afternoon at his home on parklawn terrace in rockville. He was wearing jeans, a light green tshirt, bring socks and bright green flipflops. Tonight a closer look at what is causing ambulance shortages in the district. Last night we told you about a baby who had to be taken to the hospital in a fire truck because the closest ambulance was seven miles away. Officials say people are abusing 911. Calling for an ambulance when they really dont need one. The Mayors Office tells news4 the district has gotten more than 56,000 lie priority calls this year. Thats compared to about 1300 calls for the most critical kinds of emergencies, like heart attack. All over the country in urban communities, this has been an issue. The use of 911, the abuse in some respects of the 911 system that is really draining resources. But 911 abuse isnt the only problem. D. C. Still isnt fully deploying its ambulances. Six months ago, the mayor promised there would be 49 ambulances on duty during the busiest shifts. But yesterday and today only 39. Tonight the man in this burning car is alive. He is dealing with some serious burns, but he is alive thanks to some Prince Georges County Police Officers and firefighters. Tonight news4s shomari stone talked to the four Police Officers who rushed to save the mans life. Reporter tonight these four Prince Georges County Police Officers are being called heroes. They put their lives on the line to save a man from that burning car. Its the first time these prince georges Police Officers take a close look at this dramatic dash cam video from one of their police cars. They Work Together to save a man inside this burning car. Watching my fellow officers go up and bust windows out and try to save this guys life. I mean it was remarkable. Reporter officers michael morass, nicholas clayden, and jeremy perch were on patrol around 12 30 this morning on lakeland street in suitland. The man crashed and his car bust into flames, trapping him inside. You can see officer morris immediately run towards the flames. There was a lot of flames. It smelt like gas. But it was so quick. It was very quick. Reporter moments later, officer nicholas clayden jumps out of his patrol car. It was an intense fire. The heat was overwhelming. The tires were popping. Explosions were going off in the car. Ive never experienced a car fire before. So i was very nervous. Reporter police say they arrived moments before fire ems units showed up. Officer clayton used his baton to pry open the door, while volunteer firefighter Daniel Collins grabbed the man and pulled him out. The driver was on fire. We were trying to get him away. We were trying to save his life. Reporter and they did. Medics rushed him to a hospital. Tonight the man has serious burns, and he is in critical condition. I believe it wasnt for me and my fellow officers, there is a good chance that he probably wouldnt have survived. Reporter in Prince Georges County, im shomari stone, news4. New at 11, were learning how Maryland Governor larry hogan plans to cut 118 million from the states budget. Hogan announced the cuts earlier in the year. Were just now learning some of the specifics. According to the associated press, more than 18 million in savings will come from laying off 40 people in the University System and eliminating 127 open positions. About 5. 5 million will be cut from the department of corrections budget, and another 6 million is being saved by the currently low inmate population. Also new at 11 00 tonight, new hope for europes weary migrants. Austria and germany both announced that their countries will let in migrants from hungary. And in a surprise late announcement, the hungarian government said it will provide buses to take them to the border now that austria and germany have agreed to let them in. Tonight police in illinois are taking a close look at some new video given to them by neighbors and nearby businesses. They think it might lead them to whoever killed a Police Officer earlier this week. The shooting set off an intense statewide manhunt for at least three suspects. There is a 50,000 reward being nufrd for the capture and conviction of those responsible. A former u. S. Labor Department Supervisor said bootlegging movies was a big mistake, and he is sorry. Tonight a news4 iteam revealed long time Agency Employee Ricardo Taylor admitted to running a movie bootlegging operation inside Labor Department offices in d. C. Court records say taylor made more than 1200 illegal dvds worth about 19,000 and sold them using the agencys email system while on the job. Taylor pleaded guilty to copyright infringement, and will now serve 24 months probation. Who is buying all those dvds . Coworkers. Friends and coworkers. People inside the building . Yes. Who were the customers . The Labor Department and its internal auditors declined to comment. Taylor has a new job now. He is working at a movie theater. He climbed the fence of the lions den at the national zoo. Zoo police were able to get to him before he got to the lions. This happened on wednesday afternoon. The zoo says the den meets safety standards. There are no plans to make any changes to the enclosure. New at 11, pepco crews are working to stop an oil leak in rock creek park. It happened on adams mill road in northwest d. C. Mineral oil that is used to insulate underground power cables leaked out, and some of it ended up in the creek. The National Park service says it does not pose any health risks to people or wildlife. Supreme court and two lower courts. She has become a flash point in the president ial campaign with several republican candidates rushing to her defense. She will never violate her confidence and never betray her god. Reporter tonight as davis lawyers appeal the contempt ruling, they argue the newly issued licenses are not valid without her approval. The county Attorney Says they are. A legal and emotional battle with no end in sight. New at 11, Virginia State Police Officers say they need more help. Expect to see more troopers out in full force this weekend. But that wont be enough. The agency says its being stretched too thin. And tonight its sounding the alarm. 600 to 700 more troopers are needed. Virginia state police say they just cant keep up with the demands. Then add the recent issue of violence against police. Its almost like your head has to be on a swivel, and you cant relax for a second. Even if 700 additional positions were immediately approved, the agency says it would still take four to five years to get everyone hired and trained. As football season kicks off, School Officials in Fairfax County say the effort to reduce footballrelated concussions is working. Thanks to the headsup program. Its a coaching strategy that stresses using helmets and pads that fit properly, and other techniques to reduce the risk of head injuries during tackles. Two years ago, fairfax was the first in the nation to adopt the program for all of its schools. Since then, overall injuries are down 15 , and there is a 36 drop in concussions. And our hope is we continue that trend. We want to see this sustainable. We want to see continued reduce overall gentlemen, continued reduced concussions.
