Abid gilani died in that crash. We know he lived in rockville, maryland. He commuted every week to his job at wells fargo in new york. He was headed there last night after attending a funeral in virginia. The search and rescue rescue Mission Continues at the crash site right now. We know seven people died when amtrak train 188 took a turn at 106 miles an hour when the speed limit was 50. The engineer pulled an emergency brake just three seconds before the crash. That was only enough time to slow down to 102 before the lead car and then all the rest jumped the tracks. We have seem coverage tonight here in d. C. And in philadelphia. He looks like a decent fellow. But how can a decent fellow do 106 miles an hour around a 50 miles an hour limited turn . How does that happen . And your son is missing. And my son is missing. He demands to know his sons whereabouts and why the train derailed. I dont think anybody knows what is going on anymore. Thats why im angry, my friend. He would not normally be on a train on a tuesday evening because he spends his workweek up in new york. But he had that funeral yesterday right here in the d. C. Area got back on the train, but never made it to his destination. So he was a really good person. He came to our wedding a few months ago. Reporter friends and family show up at the rockville home of a wells fargo executive to express condolences. Abid gilani was 55 years old. Neighbors say he lived here with his wife and commuted by train to his job in new york. He was among those who died when that amtrak train derailed in philadelphia. This is his cousin. I found out from facebook someone had, you know sent prayers about, you know about him being missing. And then kind of found out that way. Reporter he says gilani had attended his uncles funeral tuesday in falls church. After the funeral, gilani boarded the train to head back to new york. Thats where he was a senior Vice President for wells fargo hospitality finance group. He last spoke to him about four income the afternoon. It was just kind of a shock, because i was probably one of the last people to talk to him yesterday before he left. Reporter gilanis linked in page also says he had worked as an executive for marriott for years, and had previously worked overseas. Well im absolutely stunned. Reporter norma is a neighbor who described gilani as dedicated to work and his family. Very closeknit family. Really a love that spanned to globe. Devoted to their son, very hardworking. And to think that if in fact he is no longer with us its just a terrible tragedy that his life has been snuffed out like that. Reporter just a tragedy for family and friends. A wells fargo and marriott both issued statements earlier today expressing their condolences. Jim, back to you. Thanks darcy. This is the deadliest train crash in the u. S. In nearly seven years. Tonight the mayor of philadelphia wants to know what was going on in the minutes before it happened. Mayor nutter said in his words there is no way in the world the engineer should have been going that fast. Jim handly is at the live desk now with what were finding out about the man behind the controls. Jim . Reporter vance, he has refused to give a statement to police but tonight were learning new information about the man at the controls. His name is brandon bastion. According to his linked in page he joined amtrak in 2006. In 2010 he became an engineer. The engineer is in charge of operating the trains speed, brakes and direction. Bastion lives in new york. According to police he would not give a statement to officers after the crash, and left a Police Station with a lawyer. Tonight philadelphias mayor is warning against a jump to conclusions. We certainly want to have more information before any judgment. But there are just some facts here. If you go 106 miles an hour on a 50 miles an hour rated curve, you got to figure something bad is going to happen. I dont know what was going on with the engineer. Did Something Else happen in the engine compartment . And all of those other questions remain to be answered. The news4 iteam is looking at one of the key factors in the crash, the speed. The train was traveling more than twice the speed limit on that section of track. And there is a system that could have slowed it down before the turn. Its called positive train control. Positive train control is designed to prevent derailments due to overspeeding. So this is exactly the type of an accident that positive train control should prevent. Its designed to do that. Congressman dated positive train control after a crash between a Freight Train and a commuter train in california in 2008. It is used already on part of amtraks northeast corridor but not in the section of last nights derailment. That derailment is hitting close to home for the entire Naval Academy family tonight. Midshipman Justin Zemser was killed in that crash. He was a rising star at the academy. A wide receiver on the Navy Football team. A 4. 0 grade point average. He was an only child on the way home to new york to see his mom. He was wonderful. He was absolutely wonderful. Everybody looked up to my son. Hell be truly missed. I miss him like a brother. Zemser was also an intern for new york city councilman eric ulric. He was only 21 years old. Jim gaines was on his way home from meetings in d. C. When the train derailed. The 48yearold was a Video Software architect for the associated press, and won awards for helping to create the agencys online video network. Gaines is survived by his wife and two children. Was a new job that put Rachel Jacobs on that train last night. She was 39 years old, had just become ceo of a philadelphiabased Educational Software startup called appernet. She was headed mohamed home when she was killed. 23 are still in hospital 8 in critical condition. One doctor at Temple University hospital says nearly all of the patients there had rib fractures, which tells him the passengers quote, rattled around a lot. He expected to see a lot of head trauma, but the hospital had only one such case. Thousands of travellers now are finding other ways to get between d. C. And new york. Airlines added flights. Greyhound bus also added more trips. The bus company says it will honor amtrak tickets until the Train Service resumes. International Limousine Service says its ride volume is ten times normal. In the meantime, amtrak says it will have limited service again tomorrow between washington and philadelphia. All the trains between philadelphia and new york have been canceled.
