Reporter doreen some of the agencies and buildings involved are so significant that the mere fact that all of their backup generators started at roughly the same time rattled nerves in the Nations Capital. It was unsettling. Around noontime lights went out at a briefing inside the highly secure state Department Headquarters in foggy bottom. The briefing continued by the light of a flashlight app on a smartphone. Several blocks away at the warner theater, as Oprah Winfrey spoke at a ceremony unveiling the maya angelou stamp, the lights also went out. Winfrey continued without missing a beat. She was a phenomenal woman. Reporter moments later, secret Service Agents quickly escorted First Lady Michelle Obama out of the theater. The lights also went out at several smithsonian museums including the National Portrait gallery and visitors were asked to leave. Then came word that even the white house had briefly switched to backup generators. Fears of a possible cyber attack on the power grid of the Nations Capital were calmed when it was learned a transmission conductor in Charles County maryland had broken free from its support structure and fallen to the ground. Essentially what that did was cause a Ripple Effect that impacted a number of buildings in the city. The backup systems realized there was a dip in voltage, it switched over to the backup system as it should. So that worked properly. So thats why in some locations people saw what appeared to be a power outage. Reporter at a pentagon briefing the head of u. S. Northern command talked about the incident. Are the backup systems that we put in place, do they work . And at the moment what ive kicked in and theyre all working. Reporter and there was also an extensive power problem related to this at the university of maryland in college park forcing the cancellation of some classes. Pepco says that theres an investigation into what caused the original equipment down in Charles County to fail and this area downtown d. C. We learned later today not the only place affected. Officials are telling us that a voltage from that massive power outage that you just described is what caused the damage. It was a very stressful day for folks who take the metro out here in bethesda. Its frustrating. Anyone need to get on the metro, you cannot board here a long day. Even longer with metro. Reporter tonight metro says the widespread power outage across d. C. And maryland caused the escalator outage at the bethesda metro station. The escalator stopped working. The station closed around 3 00 this evening. Metro employees told people to use the Medical Center or Friendship Heights station. Several buses drove people to the Medical Center station. She told me at the end of the day shes exhausted but says metro does a pretty good job fixing problems. These things run pretty quickly. Reporter again, the escalator is fixed. Developing tonight, a white Police Officer is being charged with murder in the deadly shooting of a black man in North Charleston south carolina. Shots fired. Subject is down. He grabbed my taser. That was the call officer Michael Slager made after he fired shots after 50yearold walter scott. He claimed scott took his taser after a routine traffic stop escalated on saturday but video obtained by the New York Times shows slager shooting scott as scott is running away. Just an hour after police were given the video, slager was taken into custody. From the beginning, when it happened the first day, all we wanted was the truth. And i think through the process weve received the truth. Scott died on the scene, slager could face life in prison or even the Death Penalty if hes convicted. His lawyers will counsel that he one of his lawyers got sick during the original trial. News4 confirmed that a judge found Charles Severance competent for trial. His attorneys now want a change of venue to move that trial away from alexandria. Police arrested severance last year months after the shooting death of ruthanne lodato. He was then murders. A man has been locked up accused of a deadly shooting near the old Walter Reed Hospital in northwest d. C. Police arrested herman odom. Investigators say he shot and killed a man last week in an attempted robbery near 13th and van buren streets. Wisconsin avenue is back open in both directions but police are still looking for a man who hit and officer and took off. The officer was off duty. He was working security around the highend shops near south park avenue. Thats the Friendship Heights area. The officer approached a suspicious car and the driver took off dragging him a short ways. The officer was not badly hurt. Investigators dont know why the driver sped off. Support is pouring in tonight to replace a fire engine destroyed in a huge fire yesterday.
