Killed in a plane crash. As Darcy Spencer tells us, the teenage pilot was alone in that plane. Yes. Thats whats unusual about this crash. The pilots age. He was just 16 years old, flying solo when he crashed this morning. He was a student pilot. It happened in a field just east of the Orange County airport about 100 mile from washington. Virginia state police were called to the crash site about 9 45 this morning. The teenager is identified as ryan mccall of spotsylvania. He was found in the wreckage of a single engine piper. It was confirmed the call was a student with Skyline AviationServices Flight school. It has students who range from 16 to 70 years old. The teenager was a sophomore at River Bend High School in spotsylvania county. The School System sent out a statement that reads in part, the riverbend Leadership Team is working closely with the counseling staff to address the concerns of our entire Educational Community as we cope with this loss. We will have additional counseling staff in place on monday march 30th and the coming days as necessary to support our students and staff. Our thoughts are with the Mccall Family during this very difficult time. The condolences are pouring in for that teen on social media. The National Transportation safety board is still trying to figure out why mccall crashed. Back to you. All right. Thanks. Some people were surprised to hear a pilot that young was flying by himself. I made some calls to find out the rules. We heard that a licensed pilot told me there is no faa requirement on how many hours of instruction you need before flying solo. It can be 10 20 30 hours. The pilot does have to be 16 years old. And he needs a valid fax certificate. And the instructor has to sign off. Well be following that story online. The accident happened in burke on lee chapel road. Paramedics had to rush two other people to the hospital. Investigators are still on the scene trying to figure out what caused that crash.
