At the height of the rush hour. Kristin wright has the details. Theyre on their way to the crash site which has become the deadliest in the history of the metro north railroad. Heres what we know so far. The train was about 45 minutes into its trip from Grand Central station in new york city when it slammed into the suv. Investigators say the suv was on the tracks because a crossing gate came down on it at a Railroad Crossing at valhalla in West Chester County in new york. The driver got out of the car to look at the car and was about to drive away when the collision happened. The train pushed the jeep more than 800 feet down the tracks and both burst into flames. The driver of the suv was killed along with five people on the train. We are hearing from some train passengers tonight about the frantic effort to get out. Somehow, some of the people in the head car got out. It seemed maybe they broke the window or something. And then a number of us were smelling the fumes from the car fuel and we said you know we need to get out. The fire was starting to spread back towards the second car. Its believed about 750 people were on that train. Metro north is the nations second busiest railroad. In the past two years there have been five accidents including a derailment that killed four people. Well follow the developments through the n online and have the latest on news 4 today starting at 4 26. At the live desk im kristin wright. Also developing tonight weve learned a teenager shot this afternoon near a busy Shopping Center in southeast d. C. Has died. The shooting happened at the intersection of east capitol street and ridge road. Jackie bensen is live at Police Headquarters tonight with details. Jackie . Reporter doreen this happened in broad daylight in the middle of a busy street. D. C. Police officers cordoned off the entire block of minnesota avenue southeast that crosses over busy east capitol street. Officials tell news 4 the victim, who was on foot was shot about 4 15 p. M. At the same time several 911 calls were made reporting the sound of gunshots in the area. The gunman is believed to be been on foot and may have chased the victim for a while. They were called from a small but busy strip Shopping Center. Officers were seen questioning one man who appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s. Its not clear if hes a witness or possible suspect. This is first homicide in the district since january 25th. Live at d. C. Police headquarters Jackie Bensen news 4. Tonight the d. C. Health department has confirmed a case of measles in the district. The virus was diagnosed back in january. Health leaders stress it is an isolated case related to International Travel and not connected to the cases in california. The centers for Disease Control says the 102 people in the 14 states highlighted in yellow became infected with measles. It is considered extremely contagious but it is preventable with a vaccine. Most but not all the cases have been linked to several dozen people who were exposed to measles at disneyland in california. Those people were not vaccinated. A check on our weather now. So what are we expecting behind this . First, well be on the mild side during the day tomorrow. Tonight, the government spokesman in jordan says that that country has executed two al qaeda prisoners in retaliation for isis killing one of its pilots. Isis released the video today purportedly showing that pilot being burned alive. Jordan had been willing to exchange a suicide bomber for the pilot, but it demanded proof that he was alive. Jordanian officials now believe the pilot actually was killed back in early january. President obama met with Jordans King Abdullah tonight before the king cut his trip to washington short to return home. The woman who survived a hit and run on the bw parkway over the weekend is listed in serious condition now. Julia pearce has two broken legs and other injuries. Hed been trying to change a flat tire when the victims daughter dialed 911 for help she was upset, but some are questioning the tone of the Anne Arundel County dispatcher who took the call. Said black history had nothing to do with the departure of three social studies teachers. Parents originally told news 4 that three teachers at Howard University middle school had been fired for teaching black history beyond the normal curriculum. In a Statement Released today, the school says those teachers resigned and that black history was not the reason. Search is already under way tonight for the next superintendent of the Montgomery County schools. Dr. Joshua starr announced today that he and the School System are parting ways as of february 16th. Larry bowers who is currently chief operating officer of the school has been named interim superintendent. The school board did not say why starr is leaving. Starr said the board wanted to go in another direction. Your commute on metro may take a little longer. The cold weather is forcing metro to restrict the speed of trains in some location because of the potential for cracked rails. Metro is using a track geometry vehicle that examines rails to determine where restrictions are needed. The speed is being reduced by onethird. Police in Prince Georges County moved in today to remove some squatters in another upscale house in the county. That house was abandoned. It had been foreclosed on. Residents are asking tonight whether the police should be doing more. Robbery suspect and nine others including children were found squatting in the home. The people there say the police need to do something about this. Weve got a swamp of vacant houses in Prince Georges County where the next set of squatters can be. And we cant keep having 21 cars come to every house twice a year to get to solve this problem. Police raided that same house last summer. At that rate they found a suspect in a d. C. Shooting living in that house. You heard about them infest infesting College Dorm Room hotels even movie theaters. It will come down for a fairly good clip for a 15 20 minute period. That will be it before it moves out of here. Im not worried about the roads for the most part what i am worried about is what comes after. Thats the real story. It will be the cold and the wind on thursday. Remember i it felt yesterday, temperatures felt 30 degrees colder during the evening hour thats what well see again on thursday. But even colder. Chance for snow its conversational snow. Flurries or snow showers around leesburg and frederick. Best chance of any coating or a little bit more will be frederick over towards portions of Northern Maryland pennsylvania.
