A mother is out of the hospital after her children were killed in a terrible crash. Good evening, im jim vance. She says she didnt know what hit her when her car was rear ended friday night. Everyone in the car was killed, except her, including her two children. Darcy . Were right across the street from where that horrible crash happened just three nights ago. I did speak to the mother of these two children who died. She just got out of the hospital, she said, so she could bury her babies. I just felt like i was in a dream or a nightmare, something. A mom who lost her little boy and teenage daughter in that horrible crash cant believe theyre gone. I wish i would have died too. Caller they were in this acura, stopped at the light. My daughter was in the back seat, singing a little silly song, being silly like she usually is. We were all laughing. And the next thing i know, i saw cracks in the windshield. The driver of a mercedes had slammed into the back of their car. Five people died, including boykins 1yearold son and her 14yearold daughter. We never knew what hit us. Boykin was the sole survivor in the car. She just got out of the hospital. All i could ask for was my babies. Her two closest friends died in the crash. They were passengers in the car with boykin. Tameka was the mother of eight children, tiffany left behind two toddlers. Were talking about ten kids without mothers. Ten. Thats absolutely devastating. Dominic green was a passenger in the mercedes. The 21yearold also died, leaving behind devastated relatives who are also angry. She needed more time to live her life. She was too young. Reporter so far Prince Georges County police have not identified the driver of that mercedes. No charges have been filed at this point, but they do say, speed and weather appear to be factors in this crash. Were live tonight in oxen hill, darcy spencer, news 4. Darcy, thanks. A d. C. Funeral home is pitching in to help the family with its arrangements. We spoke to the director tonight in northwest. What weve decided to do is donate a large portion of our services and time to the family, to accommodate them and assist them in the arrangements and also giving their loved ones a decent burial with dignity and respect. A joint funeral will be held for Tiffany Wilkerson and tameka curtis next week. The two women were sisters and together they leave behind ten children. Tonight doctors are hoping that a blood tranfusion will with ebola. In texas who we learned this evening that dr. Kent brantly, who survived ebola, went to dallas to donate his plasma to nina pham. The centers for Disease Control says its doing an investigation to finds out how pham, a nurse, became infected while treating ebola patient thomas duncan. Also new tonight, the university of kansas hospital says it has a patient with ebolalike symptoms. Doctors immediately isolated that patient after learning the person worked on a medical boat off the coast of west africa. A man taken to the hospital in germantown today does not have ebola. He traveled to africa and developed aches and a fever. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance out of an abundance of caution. The hospital says it followed history, but he did not present signs of ebola and he was released. Another potential tool in the fight against ebola will be tested in maryland. An experimental vaccine is being shipped to silver spring. Theyre doing that for trials on 40 volunteers. It could be shipped to west africa within months if it works. Another vaccine is also undergoing trials at the National Institutes of health. A Northern Virginia man knows what it takes to control ebola, he helped name it in the 70s. The worse of the current outbreak is in guinea, sierra leone, and liberia. But the first outbreak was in zaire. Gary cook there was and tonight he talked to our jackie bensen. Reporter this wooden medallion is a memento of the successful containment of the first identified Ebola Outbreak in 1976, in what was then zaire. Gary cook was a young Foreign Service officer tasked with helping coordinate an unprecedented International Response to a disease ravaging a small village. He recalls the team of scientists and physicians who flew in from around the world to treat a virus that at the time, had no name. It fell to this team to actually name the virus. They determined it was a new virus, it needed a new name. We knew if we named after the village, it would be stigmatized. We heard about a river not far away called ebola, and that became the name of the disease. Lessons from the 1976 outbre are the subject of an recall entitled ebola then and now published last month and illustrated with photos taken by coauthor, dr. Joel brennan. It describes the work by international physicians, nurses, and scientists who earned the trust of patients and their families. Gary cook remem them as heroes. We had the people from the centers of Disease Control. I still remember the names of those heroes. They were dedicated. We had experts from belgium. Doctors had to remove them in order to save his life. And tonight, hes sharing his story of colonel with doreen gentzler. It looks like a mask or a prop. But for donnie fritz, these items are his life line to the outside world. I felt i liked like a monster. I thought, if i cant even stand to look at myself, how can anybody else look at me. Thats because underneath that mask, which is really a specially made hitech prosthetic, donnie looks like this. He doesnt have a face. It was removed by doctors after he was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer that ate away his jaw bones, nose, parts of his cheeks and forehead. The doctors told him, if they didnt remove it, he would die. It was very scary and some laying there all night long and just praying to god and saying, lord, i cant handle this. After the surgery, donnie couldnt tk or chew food. He was embarrassed to leave home. They searched for a doctor to reconstruct his face, but no one was able to help. Donnie was ready to give up. His wife didnt. Her searching found dr. Michael singer in bethesda. I think anybody with that kind of surgery and strength and will to live and faith in god and just, you know, really, your heart just goes out to someone like that. Reporter but drr singer also knew it would take something cl mirle to reconstruct donnies face. We had to invent literally what we did, which was remarkable eng doctors were abl create and attach this prosthetic to cover his face. It snaps off to reveal another device, a palette which acts like an upper jaw, which can also be removed. Donnie said one of the first things he did after he got his new face was take his wife out to dinner, something he hasnt been able to do for years. And the people that looked across the table from her and see this huge smile on her face, and to be able to talk while im eating, it was such a blessing. It was overwhelming. Reporter donnie says his journey has been tortious, emotionally and physically, but now that hes made ito the other side, hes actually finding some wisdom in all that pain. It aint about what we look like. Its who we are inside. Reporter its a lesson that donnie fritz learned the hardest way possible. Theres not a day i get out of bed and i dont thank god for everything i have. I mean, from i dont see that well, but i still hathank him f my e donnies cancer is very rare, only about 50 people in the world have ever been diagnosed with it. The good news, that drastic surgery, along with radiation has helped him to remain cancerfree. Back to you. Incredible story there. New at 11 tonight, gay Rights Groups are calling it a seismic shift. The vatican stunned the world today by showing tolerance to homosexuality. A preliminary report on family life written by bishops, mentioned the gifts and qualities of gay catholics. It urges pastors to provide homosexuals with support.
