Two months since a slope failure forced dozens of neighbors out of their homes in ft. Washington. Tonight Prince Georges County laid out a plan to buy out some of the affected houses and the clock is ticking on a decision. Nu news 4s Chris Lawrence joins us with the latest. Reporter the clock is ticking. They only have a few months before cold weather sets in. The people here did not get the answer they were hoping to hear. And more and more, this is all boiling down to what is the worst of these peoples homes right now . And that is something that people in maryland, d. C. And virginia can all relate to. Tonight, the homes in piscataway pills sit on shaky ground. A new plan may save some. We still lose our house. But i think the other 22 get to stay. Reporter sharee owns one of six homes the county could by. We bought this home in 2008 hoping we would be there for a very long time. My husband and i had just gotten married. Just starting the family with our kids. Reporter this new option would still require nearly all the homeowners to move out for up to six months as crews reinforce the slope that collapsed in a landslide in may. But for six families like this one, the county would average the appraisal from two firms and make an offer on their homes. At least pay me fairly for it. Reporter residents who attended the meeting said even if they keep their homes, what are they now worth . We wanted to move south where my daughter lives. And suddenly were hit with this. Well never be able to sell it at this point. Its crushed us. Reporter is there a limit to how much money the county should provide to shore up private land . Yes, 11 million is the limit. Reporter the new plan costs 15 million, meaning the county still needs millions from the state. We need it immediately. That cant be something the governor says, hey, well have this well look at it in General Assembly in january. Its too late. Reporter up next is a closeddoor meeting between the residents and county officials to hash things out further. But again, cold weather will be coming. Right now, the only reason these folks are in their homes, they have aboveground lines giving them water, sewage, electricity. That wont work in the winter and there seems to be no solution to allowing them to stay past that point. For now, im live in ft. Washington, Chris Lawrence, news 4. Thanks, chris. New tonight, a 20yearold d. C. Man has been arrested accused of robbing three banks in one day. His name is maurice douglas. Police say hes the guy caught on Surveillance Video at two wells fargo banks and one td bank in the district on june 20th. Hes also accused of robbing a pnc bank a couple of weeks earlier. Neighbors in northeast washington are calling for improved safety around a local rec center. It was the scene of a triple shooting over the weekend. A shooting thats still unsolved. News 4s Darcy Spencer has more on what neighbors say needs to change. Darcy . Reporter that is the rec center and the park attached to it right across the street from here. Residents did a walkthrough of that park tonight, along with police, and found some major security concerns. They say these problems will be addressed to make sure this place is locked down after dark. This gate over here. Reporter Community Leaders walked through the Rec Center Park trying to figure out how there could have been a shooting here after it was closed sunday night. Leaders found problems with security at the fencedin park and playground, areas where someone could slip through the fence and a gate that couldnt be locked. When the community hears Horror Stories like this, it sort of makes them think a while. But were on top of this and were going to take care of it. Reporter d. C. Police say these young people were involved in the shooting here at the park area sunday night. Surveillance video shows them getting away toward the back of the property that was supposed to be closed and locked. We will have officers coming through checking especially on the midnight tour. Reporter today neighbors did a safety walk in the community. The rec Center Shooting among their concerns. We have to be out here and be vigilant and let people know were paying attention. Let our neighbors know to look out for each other. Reporter residents say they want to keep this a safe place to play, not a place for gun play. I think its concerning that there are guns around and that theyre being used. Reporter now, all three people who were shot in that shooting are expected to be okay. D. C. Police are asking for help in identifying those young people shown in that Surveillance Video. In northeast, Darcy Spencer, news 4. Thank you, darcy. Shop owners in d. C. Are on edge and concerned that their jobs could put their lives in danger. They met with the police chief to talk about the recent robbery and murder at the gold Corner Grocery and deli in northwest. The owner of that store, james oh, was beaten to death. The men who did it are still on the run. I am still concerned. I believe this can occur, yes. It is the possibility because there are a lot of criminals out loose out in the streets. The police have added new surveillance cameras in that area. The store where the beating happened is still closed. Developing tonight, more problems at n. I. H. The food and Drug Administration revealed that lab workers found hundreds of vials of potentially deadly germs at the National Institutes of health in bethesda. In all, there were 327 vials. Many of them labeled dengue, influenza and q fever. The vials are now being tested. And that disclosure came hours after the director of the centers for dd control and prevention in atlanta testified on capitol hill. Among the questions, the recent mishandling of live anthrax. A highly regarded neurologist is out on bail tonight after he was arrested and charged with prescription fraud. His name is dr. Sam oraee. Hes been practicing for more than 20 years. A recent search warrant found hed been writing prescriptions for narcotics without performing the necessary medical exams. This all comes as part of an operation called dragon slayer. That operation is set up to target distributors of pain medications in Prince William county. And it has resulted in dozens of arrests. A cell phone camera captured this takedown. Now nearly a month later, weve learned the suspect in a brutal beating is still undergoing a mental evaluation to see whether or not hes competent to stand trial. This man approached a man in rockville and hit him over the head with a large rock. He did not know the victim whos recovering at a rehab center right now. And were told that his condition is improving. Developing right now in the middle east, a period of calm in effect between israel and hamas. Both sides have agreed to hold their fire for at least five hours. That would be to allow humanitarian aid into the palestinian territory where as many as 1 Million People are without water. The temporary ceasefire was requested by the united nations. The Israeli Military, however, has warned that if any attacks are launched during the pause, it will retaliate. While its not an allout war just yet, it appears to be getting very close. Most of the casualties in recent airstrikes have been civilians. And today, nbc news cameras were there when disaster struck in gaza. Four children were killed there. Richard engel reports now from tel aviv. Reporter our camera recorded the shot. An israeli shell smashing into a gaza city port. It was brought daylight. There was no warning. It wasnt the precision war israel says its fighting. A group of boys, cousins playing on the beach, now running for their lives. Until seconds later, another shell hit. Israel claimed it was firing at hamas militants at the port. But the dead were four young boys. Several others from the same extended family were wounded, including one who managed to crawl up the beach to a nearby hotel. Medics rushed the boys to a hospital. Parents started to arrive. And told what happened while expecting the worst. A mother asks, where is my son . Where is my love . Then, her worst fears came true. Pray for your son, pray for your son, a relative told her, he is now a martyr. As word spread, the other boys families arrived. What were the boys doing, a father asked, they didnt have any rockets . Tonight. 15yearold Tariq Abu Khdeir arrived in the last hour at the Tampa Florida airport. His face no longer bruised. The teenager originally from baltimore was visiting family in jerusalem when he was attacked and detained for allegedly taking part in violent protests there. After his flight landed, abu khdeir held a News Conference asking everyone to remember the children who died in the conflict. One of his cousins is among the victims. In less than an hour now, police will no longer be able to arrest you for having small amounts of marijuana in the district. The decriminalization of an ounce or less of pot goes into effect at midnight tonight. While you cannot be arrested, you will get a ticket and have to pay a fine of 25. Police have printed up small cards with the dos and donts of the new law. The main thing they want you to know, marijuana is still illegal. You can be arrested if you smoke marijuana in public, consume marijuana, have more than an ounce of marijuana or sell marijuana. What is unclear is how long this law will be in effect. A republican congressman from maryland is working to defund the law with an amendment to a house spending bill. Another republican congressman is using the same method tonight to take aim at d. C. Gun laws. Firstterm representative Thomas Massie of kentucky introduced an amendment to a spending bill to defund d. C. s gun control laws. The bill passed the house with the amendment. Right now in the district, handguns have to be registered every three years and owners have to be fingerprinted and complete a safety course. The amendment would do away with all of those requirements. Senate approval is still needed and sun likely. A Close Encounter over the skies of south florida. A pilot there recorded video of a drone on a collision course with his helicopter. This is what pilot paul bart saw coming towards him at a very high speed. He was in the air shooting video of a charity race back in may when the Unmanned Aircraft appeared in the sky. It came at us. It went right underneath us. If that drone had hit my tail rotor and taken me down, i would have come down on 2,000 people in the street. The pilot followed that drone back to the home of the man operating it. His name is jeffrey. He says he did the best to keep the drone out of the helicopters aircraft. Both men called the federal Aviation Administration and the police. The faa is working on stricter rules for drones. Being caught drinking underage is the least of one hawaii mans worries. 20yearold kevin mosley was arrested by the fbi monday for getting drink on a British Airways flight from l. A. To monday and making threats. Crew members say he had a bomb, spit on and threatened to kill flight attendants and said he would open a door on the plane. The fbi says the crew restrained him in handcuffs for most of the flight. He said he had several drinks during a ninehour layover in london. Hes out on bond now. The man accused of breaking into the Kennedy Family retreat in haiyyannis will have to waitr a month for his arraignment. Today, the judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation for 53yearold james lacroix. Police say lacroix walked into the kennedy mansion through an unlocked door last night. 16yearold ted kennedy iii was alone at the house at the time. He was not injured. But look at the 50s on the mouth. It will be chilly in downtown but we wont get below 60 degrees. Its hard to get below 60 in july. D. C. Reagan airport, only below 60 four times in the last 74 julys. The last time it happened, 2001. Weve not set a record low in july here since 1988. Not true in dulles, though. Outside the beltway, its a much cooler story. Last two record lows in the month of july at dulles, 2009, 53 degrees. And 2002, 47. So its a lot cooler once you get away from the urban heat island and also the warmer waters of the potomac. Clearing skies for now. That will set the stage for the cool weather tomorrow morning in the suburbs. And theres plenty more cool air to come through the day tomorrow.
