eastern shore. elsewhere, temperatures have plummeted. the areas in dark blue are at or a little below freezing, especially out in the mountains, shenandoah valley, eastern west virginia, look at this, across much of virginia and maryland, areas in dark blue down to the mid 30s. and that includes prince george's, arlington, fairfax, montgomery county, the mid 30s this morning. reagan national and warmer waters of the potomac, 46. a chilly start to the day. a warmup's on the way. details your wednesday in ten minutes. matt? >> reporter: good morning, we've picked up the first crash of the morning. it's an accident as you make your way on 66. you see the chopper on the scene. at this point three left lanes remain blocked. only the right is backing up, significant growing in the stretch. looking at the sudley road camera, the accident reported at 234. another problem reported, a car fire. that's going to tie things up on the east side. eun, aaron? >> thank you. back to normal. the massive delays and major headaches of last night's commute shouldn't be an issue this morning for metro riders. full service has been restored to the orange and blue lines after a train derailed. this happened just after 7:00 last night near the rosslyn station. news4's tracee wilkins live at the station now. >> reporter: they were worried specifically about the blue line. they weren't sure that they would be able to have the line up in time for the commute. because they worked overnight, they did get both the orange and blue lines back up. yesterday they had a train derailment at 7:00 p.m., the franconia/springfield blue line train derailed as it was leaving the station at rosslyn. they say one set of the wheels on the first car of the train came off the track. metro is calling this derailment minor because they were able to get the train back on the tracks in about five minutes. 1,000 passengers were offloaded. no joisinjuries reported. it was inconvenient. they had to be one tracked in and out of the station. metro crews successfully re-railed the wheel that came off the track overnight. metro spokesperson dan steffel tells us he's confident that rider will not have any issues today. >> before we made the declaration that normal service would be restored, not only did we analyze all of the equipment downstairs, but also ran test trains over that location multiple times during the overnight hours before we were confident that we'd be able to restore full service. >> reporter: they are still investigating exactly what caused this derailment. they're not exactly sure at this point. when all of this happened, passengers were complaining about not knowing what to expect, what was going on, and where they'd be heading next. we asked the metro spokesman about that, and his response will be coming up in the next report. i'm tracee wilkins live in rosslyn. back to you. breaking news, north korea is threatening another military strike, this time aimed at the u.s. a senior official says the country is armed with powerful mobile weapons capable of striking america. he made the remarks this morning at a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the country's army. he said the weapons could defeat the u.s. 66. breaking news on the traffic side. the accident. what we have is the left lane blocked. previously it was three left. we are getting much better. there you see 66 with our sudley road camera. the accident scene is at 234. 95 getting heavy now. just south of lorton road we've got the shot. you'll start to see brake lights as you head northbound from the bridge all the way to the beltway. 26 miles per hour on average. 23 minutes to make the trip. 270 southbound at father hurley, you'll see the congestion. once you get to the 270 spur, though, into the beltway. all of two minutes. not too much to worry about there. back to you. >> matt, thank you. today all firefighter and paramedics in prince george's county will go door to door to test carbon monoxide detectors. the move comes after five people in one house died of carbon monoxide poisoning on shelby drive in oxon hill yesterday. that's where we have more live from melissa. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right, the canvas of the southlawn neighborhood in oxon hill starts in a couple of hours. around 9:00 this morning. we know prince george's county police chief will be here along with several other firefighters. and the fire chief and mayor will be talking with residents, talking about the dangers of carbon monoxide and checking smoke alarms here in the neighborhood. now a married couple, the woman's sister and two renters, were found dead inside the house monday. fire official say carbon monoxide levels were 100 times the acceptable level. and they broke an exhaust -- and that a broken exhaust pipe on the furnace might be to blame. carbon monoxide can be generated by any appliance that burns coal, wood, charcoal, gas, or propane. firefighters say installing a carbon monoxide detector is the only real way to detect the presence of this odorless, colorless gas. they recommend annual furnace and chimney inspections. car mailbox poisoning -- carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms very similar to the flu. >> the reality is these people apparently were affected quickly by a large quantity of carbon monoxide. and without the detector and without the connection of the pipe, we are where we are. >> reporter: just a horrific story here. this is not the department's first time here in the southlawn neighborhood. they've been on four calls for possible carbon monoxide in recent months here. say they that's not uncommon in an older neighborhood like this one. the fire department says everyone should have a carbon monoxide detector in their home. most of the homes here are single family. they are homes that were built in the mid to late '50s. again, some of the appliances inside some of the pipes inside might be older than they should be and need inspections. they will be out here around 9:00 this morning speaking with residents. live in oxon hill, maryland, back to you. >> thank you. a young boy died when he drowned in a pond in stafford county. police tell the "freelance star" that it happened just before 5:00 last night in the somerset landing subdivision. the 11-year-old autistic boy slipped out of his home unnoticed. when his mother went looking for him, she saw the boy in a retention pond. a man walking his dog helped pull the boy from the water and began cpr. the boy died at the hospital. a rite-aid store manager shot during a robbery is paralyzed from the waist down. surveillance video captured the crime at the drug store on rhode island avenue in northeast d.c. you can see the robber approach the manager, albert mcduffie, and demand money. when he didn't move fast enough, the robber shot the father of two. mcduffie spoke with news4 exclusively from his hospital bed over the phone. >> like man, i can't believe you just shot me. just can't believe you shot me. maybe i didn't move fast enough. i mean, you know, stuff like this -- it happens. i mean, we don't have -- no remorse over what happened. i mean, i'm still here. i'm in great spirits. just trying to get back on my feet. >> police arrested the suspect, ricky vinston. he didn't get away with any money, just a pan of mentos. a competency hearing for a man accused of killing his 91-year-old wife. albrecht muth is accused of strangling his wife in their home. the case has been delayed because of questions about muth's mental health. last month he was deemed temporarily incompetent to stand trial pending further evaluation. maryland lawmakers may be returning to annapolis for two special sessions. governor martin o'malley it s in favor of two sessions, one to develop a budget and one to expand gambling in the state. they never reached a deal that would authorize a full-fledged casino in maryland. many lawmakers want it to be built at national harbor. the legislation passed in the senate, but lawmakers in the house want a study to learn more about the impact the casino would have. a bold step is how mayor gray described a bill that would give the district more control over its budget. senator lieberman of connecticut introduced the legislation allowing the city to spend its local tax dollars without approval of congress. local leaders rejected a similar bill drafted by republican congressman darrell issa last year because it restricted the city's ability to fund abortion. and a new place to enjoy a stroll around the anacostia river. d.c. mayor vincent gray and leaders officially cut the ribbon opening the anacostia river walk trail bridge yesterday. it runs from benning to the 11th street bridge on the north side of the river. the mayor says this is part of an ongoing initiative to revitalize the anacostia riverfront. when it's complete the trail will run from the national mall at the tidal basin to other trails in maryland and virginia. the entire 20-mile track should be completed in 2014. today the supreme court will hear argument on arizona's controversial immigration law. it allows police to check the legal status of a person if officers suspect that person is in the country illegally. arizona claims its crackdown did what the federal government didn't do. the obama administration argues states have limited roles in immigration policy. five other states passed similar laws, they are all tied up in courts now pending this decision that's expected from the supreme court by the end of june. 6:37. 48 [ applause ] >> romney will spend the next few days fundraising in new york and new jersey. gingrich says he's reassessing where he stands in the race for president. the former house speaker finished 3 points behind romney in delaware. the state gingrich spent a majority of his time campaigning in the last month. he says he'll finish a week of campaigning in north carolina. in a speech before a small crowd of supporters, gingrich called himself a citizen rather than a candidate. he also promised to do whatever it takes to make sure president obama is defeated in november. gingrich had said he'd stay in the race until the republican national convention this summer. 14 before the hour now. a spokesman for virginia governor bob mcdonnell insists that a new ad is not an audition for the governor to become mitt romney's running mate. >>view is growing strong -- virginia is growing strong again. >> tens of thousands of new virginia jobs. >> his political organization, opportunity virginia, is spending $400,000 to run this commercial for the next ten days. it highlights the commonwealth's positive economic statistics. political analysts say it's an tampa for mcdonnell to rehabilitate his image after it took a hit during the general assembly session. a vote to give the postal service a much-needed money but with strings attached. jackie deangelis with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the senate may vote today on a bill that could save the u.s. postal service from bankruptcy. the measure would give the agency an $11 million cash infusion, but it also makes it harder for the postal service to close thousands of underperforming post offices and end saturday delivery, which it says it needs to do to become profitable again. senate democrats are readying a bill to freeze interest rates on a popular student loan. the rate on the stafford loan is set to double to nearly 7% in july. more than each million people currently have or have had -- seven million people currently have or have had the stafford loan. the fight is over how to pay for the bill. democrats want to boost payroll taxes for some small businesses. a move that republicans are against. back to you. >> all right. thank you. president obama laid out why it's important to keep student loan rates down last night. and he did it with style. >> the reason it's so important to keep down costs is so we keep college affordable. >> and the president knows his stuff, y'all. that's why they call him the pot -- that's why they call him the potus. what is it? >> potus stands for president of the united states. >> he's the potus with the mostest! >> only jimmy fallon, boy. the president slow jammed the news on "late night." president obama also shared some of his more embarrassing moments in office. >> we were having these human rights activists who were there getting the robert kennedy award at the white house. i was supposed to speak. michelle and i go in, this is the east room, george washington is looking down on you. i make my speech. then i walk down and grab michelle's hand, and i walk her out. and then one of my team says, mr. president, you're supposed to stay for all the other people speaking. so we had to turn around and walk back. >> nice. >> and wave again. >> oops. first lady michelle obama appeared on "late night" earlier this year to promote her campaign against childhood obesity. think that's empairsing? imagine spilling yogurt on the president. in boulder, colorado. cameras caught that incident, and the president took it in stride, laughed it off. and as if that weren't enough, he even brought up the incident during his speech. that poor girl is motorfied. >> she's lucky the secret service didn't take her out. you hope it's yogurt. >> she will have a story to tell for the rest of her life. >> we'll need to find out who she was. >> she'll be on some show. i'm hoping the "today" show. the shuttle "enterprise" will not be taking off this morning as delayed. nasa delayed the trip the to see new york because of weather. nasa hopes to fly "enterprise" out on friday on the back of that modified jet from dulles to jfk just like the shuttle "discovery" did last week. once it's in new york, a tugboat will move the "enterprise" to how cold it is. even at prince george's county, charles, calvert, st. mary's, southern maryland, mid 30s as well as in montgomery, arlington, fairfax counties, most of virginia, at or below freezing as is much of west virginia. here's your day planner for this wednesday. you need the winter coat this morning. by your lunch hour, you can shed the coat. we'll be into the mid 60s by then. a blustery wind. we'll have lots of sun and peaking near 70 by mid-afternoon. a 35-degree jump from where we are now. sunset at 7:55. by then, back to the 60s. then we'll be down to the upper 40s by dawn on thursday. through the day tomorrow, we might get a morning shower. you'll need an umbrella. passing showers likely after that through midday. maybe even an afternoon thunderstorm. after that, we'll dry out a bit on friday. highs in the mid 60s. right now, there looks like a chance for rain for the weekend. now it looks like that may be on saturday afternoon and evening. a chilly day, too. highs only around 60. and then drying out sunday is the way it looks now. stay tuned, though. there's quite a bit of uncertainty it the weekend that could change. first part of next week, partly cloudy monday, tuesday. highs near 70 again, which is about the average high this time of year. and matt has our look at traffic now. good morning. >> reporter: and a good morning. at this point looking at 270. you are going to see congestion as you head south of 70, pretty much all the way down now. 31 miles per hour, the green valley stretch. further down toward falls road, we've got a lot of congestion. not too bad at this point as you approach the beltway. once you're on the top side beltway, you've got a pretty heavy pace from 95 all the way toward 270. running at about 18 minutes on average. 32 miles per hour. looks like some late lifting construction there northbound on the 495 stretch on thewide. you're going to see -- the pesticide. you're going to see with the left lane partially blocked. arrows telling everybody to get to the right. that's going to keep things thick there. back to you. >> thank you. quick work overnight by metro. no delays on the blue and orange lines. less than 12 hours after a car derailed. this happened during the tail end of the evening rush just after 7:00 at the rosslyn station. news4's tracee wilkins there live with overnight developments. >> reporter: good morning. it was a mess yesterday evening. and plenty of commuters were thinking that the same thing may happen today. as you said, the good news is both the blue and orange lines are up and running. let me show you what it looked like yesterday. 7:00 p.m., they had a train derail here. happened with a franconia/springfield blue line train as it was leaving the rosslyn station. they say one set of the wheels on the first car came off of the track. metro's calling this a minor derailment because they were able to get the train back on to the tracks, although they had to single track to get passengers out of the station yesterday evening. now, passengers were complaining yesterday about a lack of communication again. and metro officials not telling them what to expect next for a long period of time. we talked with metro spokesperson dan steffel about that. here's his explanation. >> we had power down on both tracks for a brief period of time. that effectively meant services suspended through the rosslyn station. shortly thereafter, we realized that it was safe to continue single tracking trains through the station. that's when the message changed to single tracking with delays. there will be a little bit of fluidity in the beginning stages of any incident like this. >> reporter: again, the track has been fixed. they havealso -- also tested it. they're not expecting issues for commuters. they're working to try and figure out exactly why this derailment happened. tracee wilkins reporting live from rosslyn. news4. >> thank you. in
