>> reporter: good morning, tom. at this point we're still looking at the delays because of the problem we had south of rockville. it was southbound 270 past montrose. medical emergency this. now you are seeing congestion coming south on 270. all local lanes, through lanes have reopened there. a little congestion over by connecticut avenue on the beltway. no major slowing. at this point, we've got a good go. 59 miles per hour from 95 all the way to the 270 exchange. and that's running with about ten minutes travel time there. eun? aaron? >> thank you. 6:02. metro is taking steps to protect passengers this morning after learning one of its drivers has viral meningitis. while you were sleeping, the agency spent the night cleaning dozens of its buses. tracee wilkins is live in northwest washington now with more on the driver and the route that he last worked. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, this driver had just gotten back from vacation. and on friday apparently was sick. so yes, metro's taken plenty of precautions. they want to make sure that folks who were on his bus are aware of the fact that this driver is sick. so let's look at his route so that folks can know for sure. metro officials say that on friday at 7:13 a.m., he started his route at 14th and buchanan here at the station, at the bus depot, and drove to l'enfant plaza to 14th and colorado, to l'enfant and northwest. the driver has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, the bus has been taken out of commission. metro does not believe that that employee had exposure to any other vehicle prior to his morning shift friday. but the employee, because he had been on vacation. metro has disinfected all 164 buses at the bus lot here at 14th and buchanan anyway, just in case. viral meningitis is not as severe as some forms of meningitis. but at its worst, meningitis is a medical emergency that can affect the brain and spinal cord and even cause death. but viral meningitis is considered, again, a less severe form. and -- but it still can be dangerous for infants and the elderly and people with immune deficiencies. so let's hack at the symptoms here. they include naush, vomiting, high fever, severe headache, and stiff neck ache. simpledoms last frseven to ten days. -- symptoms can last seven to ten days. if you have symptoms, contact your doctor as soon as possible. metro paying close attention to what's going on with passengers and warning of the possibility that if you were on that bus, check yours out. make sure you're not having symptoms and that you're not sick. live this morning in northwest. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. today a special session may finally be in the works in maryland. governor martin o'malley will meet with house and senate leaders at 8:00 this morning. they will try to see eye to eye on a budget that would help avoid more than $500 million in cuts. but this could come at the expense of expanded gambling. the governor has said a table games bill distracted lawmakers from passing a budget and would need to be separated from the budget during a special session. if the gambling bill stays on the agenda, maryland lawmakers will have a new casino location to consider. one prince george's county developer wants to put casino number 6 at the boulevard at the cap center in largo. the plan includes nearly 4,800 slot machines and more than 100 table games. 5,000 parking spaces would go on top of the structure. the developer says that project is shovel ready, but county executives say a vegas-style facility at national harbor is the best option. voters head back to the polls in decision 2012 this morning. five states hold primaries today including connecticut, delaware, new york, pennsylvania, and rhode island. it is the first time since rick santorum dropped from the race that voters will take part in a primary. that leads ron paul and newt gingrich as the only gop candidates left to challenge front-runner mitt romney. romney holds more than half of the delegates need for the nomination. he plans to hold a rally in new hampshire tonight and is expected to use the platform to shift his focus to the general election in november. gingrich's time on the campaign trail could be winding down. in a recent interview with nbc news, he hinted that he may withdraw from the race if he has a poor showing in delaware today. >> we're going to get delegates in rhode island because it's proportional. i think we're going to win some delegates in pennsylvania. and i think we're going to win delegates in upstate new york. but delaware really would be -- this has been a good opportunity for us. we've been here seeing a lot of people. we've got very positive responses. and i would hope that we would do well here. either carry it or come very, very close. >> even with a win, gingrich would only earn 17 delegates. president obama is expected to officially clinch the democratic nomination with today's primaries. he has won almost every delegate so far. the countdown schrock ticking again per space shuttle "enterprise" as it prepares for its move to new york. nasa hopes to fly the or bitter out of here tomorrow on the back of the same 747 that brought "discovery" to d.c. last week. firefighters running not 6:15. city commissioners in sanford, florida, are not accepting the police chief's resignation over his handling of the trayvon martin shooting case. bill lee and his department have been widely criticized for failing to immediately arrest neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman. he's accused of shooting unarmed teenager trayvon martin in february. lee temporarily stepped down as police chief on march 22 saying he wanted to let tensions cool. zimmerman was released from jail yesterday after posting a $150,000 bail. he is now hiding until his trial. that date has not yet been set. it could be a year or two away. the government's star witness in the john edwards corruption trial will take the stand again today. edwards is accused of violating campaign finance laws to cover up an affair with his pregnant mistress during thetuate presidential election. -- the 2008 presidential election. former aide andrew young managed the cover-up. the judge disclosed that young had recently contacted three other witnesses trying to find out how they would testify. expert say that could erode his credibility. the trial is expected to last more than a month. the former presidential candidate is facing 30 years in federal prison. also today, the defense attorneys for baseball great roger clemens will present their opening statement in federal court. federal prosecutors accused clemens of lying to congress when he said he never used steroids or human growth hormones. in their opening statement, they said clemens told lies to cover up other lies. clemens scored a legal victory when the judge said prosecutors cannot ask a former teammate where he got his steroids. prosecutors were hoping to tie clemens to the same supplier. the case ended last year in a mistrial. a new york hotel maid will soon know if her lawsuit claiming dominique strauss-kahn will move forward. a judge is expected to rule by friday whether or not to throw out the case. the housekeeper claimed strauss-kahn tried to rape her in his hotel suite last may. the former international monetary fund leader denied doing anything violent in their encounter. prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last summer. today former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will be back in the district for the first time since she left congress. gifford will receive the we are emily award from emily's list. that's a group dedicated to electing pro-choice democratic women to political office. organizers will also announce the creation of a new award named in giffords' honor. it's meant to recognize women at the beginning of their political careers. giffords resigned from her house seat earlier this year so she could focus on her recovery from a gunshot wound to the head. d.c.'s largest free military and spouse career fair is today. about 100 employers including amazon, lockheed martin, and chick fil-a will be on hand. there will be seminars and on-site resume critiques. jane watrel will moderate one of the seminars. the fair will be held at the walter e. washington convention center in hall d. seminars begins at 8:00. the career fair will be from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 this afternoon. two of the nation's biggest benefit programs for the elderly and disabled could run dry earlier than expected. a new report shows the trust funds that support social security will run out of money three years earlier than previously thought. the funds will now be empty by 2033. the report blames high energy prices, the economy's slow rebound, and an increasing number of retirees for draining those accounts. medicare is also expected to run out of money about a decade earlier in 2024. if both programs run dry, they would only be able to collect enough in payroll taxes to pay partial benefits. new video sgluft after a series of explosions land a pair of firefighters in the hospital. you see that there. the blasts caught on dash camera in orange county. the firefighters were responding to reports of several explosions in an underground electrical vault when something triggered another round of blasts. the men were both launched about ten feet into the air. they were taken to a hospital with minor burns. despite only 18 wins so far this season, the wizards' leadership isn't going anywhere. team president ernie grunfeld tentatively agreed to a new deal that would keep him at the helm until at least the end of the 2013/2014 season. the deal comes on the heels of the longest winning streak the team has had in five years. the wizards beat up members of the u.s. military in colombia. the pentagon suspended the security clearances of 12 military members under investigation in this scandal, including a person who works in the white house communications agency under the military. the secret service has taken action against 12 of its employees, six of them have been let go. a polygraph test appears to have cleared at least one secret service employee. it's certain that one sailor will never forget katy perry's concert at the u.s. naval academy in annapolis. dwliefr crashed into a -- the driver who crashed into a house. leak at the scene at new hampshire avenue in the white oak area last night. you see the crash did pretty exte extensive damage to the front porch. investigators say the driver ran away before officers got there. nobody was hurt. this morning, police are looking into whether two men suspected in three murders were involved in any other crimes. the wife of one of the victims spoke exclusively to news4. prince george's county detectives say evidence links the murders of cab driver edmond aka fios o, 17-year-old high school student justin izax, and community activist lenny harris. police arrested 26-year-old tyrone anton lewis in the case. they also arrested 26-year-old kelvin walker. the cab driver's widow, ruth, tells news4 she waited for seven years for justice for her husband. >> he had no thought, no regret for what he did to these human beings' lives. he didn't care as long as he was getting -- now he'll have plenty of time to think about it. >> police say all the murders were random robberies. the man convicted in the beating death of a woman more than 30 years ago could be cleared in the case. an innocence hearing started yesterday in the high-profile katherine fuller murder case. she was attack and killed in 1984 in an alley. eight people were convicted including cliff yarborough. he was 16 at the time. he said that detectives beat a confession out of him. defense lawyers say there's other evidence that someone else was responsible. in just a few hours, we expect to learn more about a vicious dog attack in northeast washington that sent two teenagers climbing on top of a car. that whole thing was caught by surveillance cameras. you can see in this video who teens joump it the car, trying to get away from the dogs friday. this is the 1200 block of queen street. the man was seriously hurt while trying to help the teens fend off the dogs. police say that they are in the process of tracking down the owner and both dogs. it's happened again. d.c. council member marion barry made another controversial comment at a public meeting. according to the "washington examiner," barry made the comments at a university of d.c. budget hearing when talking about the need to train nurses. he said, "in fact, it's so bad that if you go to the hospital now, you find a number of immigrants who are nurses, particularly from the philippines. and now offense, but it's grow our own teachers, grow our own nursesy is we don't have to scrounge around." at his victory party, barry told people that asian business owners ought to go. he later apologized for the remarks. another d.c. council member wants to allow liquor sales on sundays in the district. ward 1 council member jim graham tells the "washington post" he is likely to recommend a localing liquor stores to open is on sundays. he expects sales to generate $710,000 in tax revenue for the district. graham is proposing the idea to block a proposal by mayor gray to extend bar hours by an hour. vincent gray will reveal a plan to make the capital the greenest city in the country. the 20 year plan called the vision for sustainable d.c. outlines a less card-dependent city, where people get around by bike, street car, bus, and measure. it fear sos better recycling standards and wisconsinable and fishable waterways. good plan. takes a york fed estimateding about 15% of americans or 37 million people have outstanding student loans. about 2/3 of the debt is held by people under the age of 30. and google will reportedly launch a new service letting consumers store music, photos, and other content on line. the service is called geico drive. and it's going to let people get information back to you any device. they'll charge a cuts. the governor said a table games bill distracted lawmakers from passing a budget and would need to be separated from the budget talks during a special session. if gambling does stay on the agenda, maryland lawmaker will have a new scene location to consider. one developer wants to put casino 6 at the boulevard at cap center in largo. the plan includes nearly 4,800 slot machines and more than 100 table games. 5,000 parking spaces would go on top of the casino structure. the developer says the project is shuffle ready. but other say a vegas-style facility at national harbor is the best option. after spending time here, space shuttle "enterprise" is ready to fly to new york. nasa hopes to fly it out tomorrow on the back of the same 747 that flew discovery around the district last week. bad weather kept "enterprise" as scheduled. nasa will do a final review. if they give the all clear, look for "enterprise" tomorrow between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and here's something you don't see every day. a crew with a flatbed truck moved the capital city diner in northeast washington. yes, that's a restaurant on a flatbed. the big question is where did they take it. the owner said crews
