murdered in his apartment with duct tape wrapped around his head. this happened in the 1300 block of levis street in northeast washington. tracee wilkins is live with more on the investigation. >> reporter: good morning, joe. this man was discovered at 6:00 p.m. yesterday. police are still here on the scene. they're still working inside of that row house where the man was found. we're told the victim is a 61-year-old man. neighbors say he lived inside of this home for years. this row house is now the center of this murder investigation. police are calling this a homicide. a police source tells news 4 the man was found dead inside of his home with his head wrapped in duct tape. police have not revealed the manner of death here. at this point, there's no report of any gun or knife being used in this case of murder. we don't know if anyone else lived inside of this home. no information on if there was forced entry either. still a lot of unanswered questions. another important point. neighbors are telling us they heard this man was beaten just a few days ago inside this house. we don't know by whom or what part any of this is going to play in this investigation, but definitely detectives will also be asking questions about that. at this point, we also have no suspect information. i'm tracee wilkins live in northeast. back to you all in the studio. >> tracee, thanks very much. new from overnight, police are investigating a possible connection between a shooting and an armed robbery. officers found a man shot on chi chillam place in northwest tk. he wasn't hurt badly, but he was uncooperative. nearby police arrested two people for armed robbery. investigators believe they could have also been involved in the shooting. a woman in ohio will undergo a mental health evaluation this morning for making a bomb threat that grounded flights at reagan national airport. the woman made the threat at a dayton airport ticket counter, claiming that a bomb was on u.s. airways flight 2596 en route to d.c. fbi officials searched that plane and luggage and interviewed all 44 passengers on board. no explosives were found. the threat did shut down the airport, though, for '20 minutes. passengers we talked with said that airport officials handled the situation well. >> when they first told us that, you know, to get off of the flight, we were a little nervous, but everybody went very orderly, and everybody from the flight and from the airport, and it was wonderful. >> no charges have been filed against the woman, police say, who made that threat. and the man who caused a scare near the pentagon last week is in fbi custody. early friday morning, jonathan mellakou from arlington was caught wandering around arlington national cemetery in off hours. police initially thought the 22-year-old marine reservist had bomb making materials in his backpack. authorities shut down the roads around the pentagon for hours, which snarled traffic. later the detective said the items were not explosive. he remains in custody until the fbi completes its investigation. no word on why he was at the arlington national cemetery in the first place. a traffic alert in the district this morning. the national park service will close lanes of constitution avenue between henry bacon drive and 17th street in northwest washington. this is part of the constitution avenue reconstruction project. that work was supposed to begin at 5:30 this morning, but the rain has postponed that work for now. when construction does begin, crews will close lanes in both directions all this week from 5:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in northwest, ddot will open a temporary bridge so drivers can get around sinkhole repairs. broad ridge road has been closed between brandywine. a temporary bridge will be opened to run southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening. drivers have to use a right of way system to cross. the sinkhole repair should be finished by late july. he's been called the next tiger woods. some say he has the best swing in golf. now a young man from northern ireland has a u.s. open title to his name. >> another u.s. open champion from northern ireland. an unreal performance from rory mcilroy. >> 22-year-old rory mcilroy led the tournament from day one and was never threatened, completely dominating the competition at congressional country club. he blew away the field, winning by eight strokes in the end and smashing the tournament record with a final score of 16 under par. mcilroy says it's a day he has dreamt of since he was a little boy, which, as civilians. libyan leaders say nine people were killed in the strike. they say the strike occurred in an area where security forces have recently put down anti-gadhafi protests. nato says a weapons system failure may have caused the incident. some members of congress are now start to go question u.s. involvement in libya and criticized president obama about the matter. >> the president has done a lousy job of communicating our involvement in libya, but i'll be no part of an effort to defund libya or to try to cut off our effort to bring gadhafi down. >> last thursday nato also accidentally bombed rebel forces when it mistook a line of rebel vehicles for those belonging to gadhafi's troops. at 9:00 this morning, week five of testimony begins in the casey anthony murder trial. she's accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter caylee. over the weekweekend, the judge scold the lead defense attorney and threatened to hold him in content of court. the defense called a forensic anthropologist to the stand but did not reveal him to the prosecution, which is required by law. a second witness for the defense said that duct tape found over the toddler's mouth did not cause her death. congresswoman gabrielle giffords is back in houston to begin months of outpatient therapy. giffords visited with family in tucson, arizona, over the weekend. this was her first trip home since she was shot in the head while meeting with constinuents back in january. giffords was released from a houston rehabilitation hospital last week but will stay in houston to continue to visit the hospital for outpatient therapy. authorities have ordered more evacuations after strong winds sent that massive wildfire -- started that massive wildfire in arizona down a mountain and into a heavily populated area. 7,000 people were forced to leave their homes near the town of sierra vista. 50-mile-per-hour winds pushed the fire toward the area over the weekend. so far 44 homes have been lost. the fire has already consumed 500,000 acres. it is just 38% contained. meanwhile, the u.s. -- john mccain is causing a stir by suggesting that illegal immigrants are to blame for starting some of the wildfires. according to cnn, mccain said that during a weekend news conference. this morning the u.s. forest service says there's no evidence that mccain's statement is true. and the flooding continues in parts of the midwest along the mississippi river this morning. levees are failing to hold back floodwaters in parts of missouri, nebraska, and iowa. farmland and several homes are completely under water now. the river crested at 45 feet, breaking a record set back in 1993. in "news 4 your health," authors of a study released overnight says a number of children with health allergies is a substantial public health problem. 1 in 13 children in the u.s. is allergic to at least one food. of them, about 40% have severe reactions, including skin rashes, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. peanuts and milk were the most common allergic triggers. the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases released the study overnight in the american pediatrics journal. a study just out this morning. this study shows that during the summer months in this country a child drowns every five days in a portable pool. the study from nationwide children's hospital in columbus, ohio, finds that between 2001 and 2009 more than 200 children drowned in pools like these. the vast majority are under the age of 5. most drowned in their own backyards. the association of pool and spa professionals says that parental supervision is the key. they add that supervision means actively watching your child without any other distractions. we have a new miss usa this morning. alyssa campanella from california. the 21-year-old took the crown last evening at the pageant in las vegas. as miss usa, she'll represent the united states at the miss universe pageant in september in brazil. miss tennessee was the first runner-up, and contestant fs fr our area also had a strong showing. miss maryland also made it to the top eight. >> congratulations to her and all the want to offer much information about who might have shot him. meanwhile, police arrested two people after an armed robbery nearby. after questioning that pair, investigators believe they could have been involved in the previous shooting. police have not made an arrest in the double stabbing at the father's day cookout in northwest washington. it happened yesterday at the marvin gaye recreation center on banks place. it started as the cook-out was ending. one person was stabbed in the back three times and another stabbed in the stomach. one person taken to the hospital in critical condition, and the other in stable condition. the medical examiner in baltimore will perform an autopsy on a body found in the chesapeake bay. a boater spotted the body floating near the bay bridge yesterday morning. investigators say it had been in the water for some time, and they are trying to identify the victim. controversy and scandal have plagued the first year of d.c. mayor's vincent gray's administration. now a new "washington post" poll shows all this bad news has taken a toll on public opinion. in january, 60% of voters had a favorable view of gray. 16% had negative ones. according to that new poll, now 47% of voters say that they have a positive view of gray. his job approval rating is even lower with just 41% of voters approving the job he's done so far. gray's administration, council chair kwame brown and council member harry thomas jr. are all currently under investigation. happening today, a group of mayors from around the country will gather at the white house. the president and vice president will hear from the mayors about their efforts to create jobs and boost their local economies. mayors from across the country spent the weekend meeting at their annual place. a virginia assistant elementary school principal arrested on child pornography charges will appear in court today. the prosecution is expected to ask that joshua myers be held without bond until his trial. myers, who was assistant principal at brumfield elementary school in fauquier county is accused of downloading graphic videos of children as young as the age of 2. a search warrant affidavit also says he told an undercover agent he went to california to have sex with children 9 and 14 years old. 6:47 now. a germantown man wants his day in court over an unusual ad campaign for his business. david abraham was fined $500 for getting the word on the street, literally. he used a type of spray chalk to write on the sidewalk. the product he used washes away in 30 days, even sooner with some rain. abraham says it is creative advertising. public officials, though, say it's defacing public property. >> i figured, if i wrote it on the sidewalk, maybe somebody would see it. if i saw movement on the site, i thought, it's a creative way to watch it off. >> abraham has started a petition asking for clarification in the law. so far, he has nearly 100 signatures. there's a new study out that americans are starting a new adage when it comes to saving money. nicole lapin joins us live with more on the story. good morning, nicole. no proverbial coffee can these days. most americans don't have enough money set aside for a rain day. bankrate.com finding only 24% of consumers have enough put away for emergency savings. i know the recommended amount is pretty steep. it's about six months worth of expenses, but another 24% don't have any emergency cash whatsoever. bankrate says with 6.2 million americans out of work for six months or longer, this just underscores how unprepared a lot of people are at a time when job security, as we well know, and the economy are huge concerns. also this morning, sega is the latest company to fall victim to hackers. the video game maker says info from 1.3 million consumers on its online network were stolen from its database. this includes names, e-mail addresses, and passwords although it's great to hear that credit card information is indeed safe and sound, and a pretty strange twist, joe. the hacker group behind the attacks on sony and the cia has actually offered to track down those responsible for the sega the patriotism of the championship and the editing of the pledge was not meant to offend anyone. >> i think a lot of people were offended, at least scratching their heads as to why they would take that's good news. thankfully, it did hold off for the u.s. open, no interruption yesterday, even though there were showers and storms lurking in the region. those did eventually move in overnight as the storms diminished. we just have had rain falling off and on since late last evening. it continues this morning. the moving color is mostly light rain. the greens and blues light rain. right now those areas of yellow that you see in southern maryland right now there in st. mary's county, they're getting a rather heavy downpour there. no thunder and lightning reports, though. scattered light rain farther to the west of washington. right now in washington, southern montgomery county and most of prince george's county getting light rain. arlington and fairfax county getting light rain. right down interstate 95 from fredericksburg to washington and baltimore getting wet. the roads are all wet. these are the rainfall totals we've had around the region. generally locally near washington anywhere from .25 inch to .4. higher amounts to west and southwest. near 60s in much of the region. near 70 in washington and near the bay. out in the mountains, cooler. near 60 there. upper 60s eastern shore. as the day progresses, we'll climb into the upper 70s near 80 this afternoon. ought to get sunshine back by then. then during the day, we'll have an overnight clearing. temperatures mid-60s tomorrow morning and during the day tomorrow, near 90 and partly cloudy. then maybe some storms tuesday night, and off and on wednesday and thursday. hotter and more humid metro here. if you're traveling on metro op the red line, you're going to see delays. the problem is at the takoma station at the track. they're single tracking between silver spring and the takoma station, going to cause you a little trouble. this accident at randolph road and dalewood lane is still blocking the two right lanes. going to see delays as you travel westbound on randolph road. and dale city traveling north to fairfax county parkway, really the delays are going to continue as you go to 395. here's 95 north at rest area. you can see you are stop and go. here's a look at 395 north construction on constitution avenue between henry bacon drive and 17th street this week gets near the national mall. rain has been delayed. rain has delayed crews from starting this morning, but workers will eventually close lanes for bumps in the road. and a temporary one-lane bridge will open today as ddot makes repairs. a tunnel for a creek failed and opened up a 20-foot sinkhole. the new runway bridge will run southbound during the morning rush hour and northbound in the evening. during off-peak hours drivers will have to use a right of way system to cross one at a time. the sinkhole right now. police in d.c. are investigating a homicide this morning. they found a man murdered in an apartment with duct tape wrapped around his head. this in the 1300 block of levis street northeast. police say the man had also suffered a beating. also a father's day cookout turns violent at the marvin gaye recreation center on banks place. a fight broke out. two people were stabbed. both were rushed to the hospital. 7,000 people have been ordered to evacuate as firefighters continue to battle a massive wildfire in arizona. 50-mile-per-hour winds help propel that fire over the weekend. it's already consumed 500,000 acres in 44 homes. and it's only 38% contained this morning. and first lady michelle obama, her two daughters, plus their grandmother and a few cousins are all starting a week long trip to africa. the obamas have been criticized of late for not focusing on africa more than other first families. mrs. obama's message, get educated, work hard, and anything's possible. eun and
