traveling eastbound route 50. if you're traveling eastbound all your eastbound lanes are shut down at route 704. we have a vehicle crash there involving a tractor-trailer. it's on its side and blocking all of your eastbound lanes. i'm told you can get off at route 704, connect to 450, and then get back on route 50, if you'd like, by connecting to route 197. again, your eastbound lanes are shut down. i'm going to keep watching this for you all morning long. if you're continuing onto the beltway this morning and you are on the inner loop, right when you get to connecticut avenue, you're going to see construction taking up the left side of the roadway. you are able to get by, but you've got to stick to the right. other roadways, checking out i-66, no problems for you both inside and outside in both directions. back to you both. in virginia a key court hearing scheduled for a former university of virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex-girlfriend. george hewgley's lawyers will make another attempt to get yardley love's records released. hewgley killed love by slamming her against her apartment wall in 2010. his attorneys say she might have died by an irregular heartbeat partially caused by prescription drugs and alcohol. the medical examiner said she died of blunt force trauma to the head, though. hewgley's trial is scheduled to begin in february. day three of jury deliberations pick up this morning in the bribery case of maryland state senator ulysses currie. he's accused of using his political power to get legislation for shoppers warehouse. he stepped down from the budget committee when he was indicted in september. he has represented district 5 in prince george's county since 1987. two top officials from penn state university stepped down overnight and plan to turn themselves in to authorities today. the school's athletic director and senior vice president for business and finance are charged with failing to report information about a former assistant football coach. jerry sandusky is charged with sexually abusing eight boys between 1994 and 2009. prosecutors say a witness caught sandusky abusing a boy back in a team shower in 2002 and notified team officials, who then allegedly failed to report the incident. >> shaky, as you can expect, being 67 years old and never having faced criminal charges. >> this is a more serious issue than other schools getting on probation for ncaa violations. you're talking about the law here. >> lawyers for sandusky as well as the two school officials all deny the charges and say they will fight them in court. legendary head coach joe paterno released a statement about the scandal saying, "i was informed in 2002 by an assistant coach that he had witnessed an incident in our shower room facility. it was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the grand jury report. as coach sandusky was retired from our coaching staff at the time, i referred the matter to university administrators." for the fourth time, there's been an attempted abduction in spotsylvania county. the latest incident happened on the satterfield court. a man in a van yelled at her and asked her to come closer to the van. she ran away. parents are concerned about what the attempted abductors could do. >> my daughter's not going outside to play because this guy's trying to snatch kids during the day. ain't no telling what this guy will do. >> the girl told police four men were in a black ford econoline van with writing that said malroy in red, and they were wearing big gray poofy coats and necklaces with crosses. they don't believe this attempt is connected to others in the county. in decision 2012, mixed political fallout after claims of sexual harassment against republican presidential candidate herman cain. he is taking a hit in the polls, but it has not stopped the flow of financial contributions. his campaign raised $2 million since reports of allegations surfaced. but a new reuters poll showed his favorability dropped 9 percentage points for republican voters to 66%. cain has denied claims by three women who say he sexually harassed them when he was head of the restaurant association in the 1990s. a low voter turnout is expected for virginia state and local offices. republicans in the commonwealth are looking to take control of both chambers in the general assembly for only the second time since the civil war. they currently control the house, but democrats have a four-seat majority in the senate. experts say they expect a voter turnout of only 30%. >> another rough, but you'd have to say really awful game for the burgundy and gold against the 49ers. quarterback john beck threw for 154 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. the skins simply could not hold onto the football, fumbling the ball twice. in the end, the turnovers came back to haunt them as san francisco came back to win the game 19-11. head coach mike shanahan said these sorts of mistakes simply cannot happen. >> on defense we did some good things, but not well enough to win. i thought the intensity was there and our players played extremely hard, but when you make those mistakes, you have two turnovers on offense, especially with pretty good field position against a team that runs ball extremely well, plays good rush defense, you can't have that many mistakes. >> the skins are fou 3-5 halfway through the season. they've lost four in a row. they head to miami next week to play the 1-7 dolphins, and the dolphins can't wait. and a thriller in pittsburgh between the steelers and archrival baltimore ravens. the steelers were down in the fourth quarter but scored with five minutes left to take a four-point lead. the ravens engineered a last second comeback, scoring with just 10 seconds left in the game. former terp tory smith catching that game winning touchdown. baltimore eked 46 degrees. ahead on "news 4 today," the occupy wall street movement continues across the country, but the message might not be getting through to most americans. a power outage in connecticut nine days after the october snowstorm. about 88,000 people still do not have power. the chief operating officer at connecticut light and power apologized for the delay. he also said power might not be voices be heard in the district over a plan to bring more oil into the united states. that's an estimated more than 8,000 people at lafayette square in front of the white house this past weekend. they protested plans for a transnational oil pipeline that would run from canada to the gulf of mexico. demonstrators fear the toxic oil would contaminate fresh water supplies. opponents say the pipeline would create jobs and lower u.s. dependence on foreign oil. a website link has been set up for donations for the family involved in a deadly crash over the weekend in prince george's county. gloria vindall was driving her sons in the backseat along route 50 when he was involved in a crash. the car caught fire, and the two boys couldn't get out in time. the football team the sons were on set up a link for donations on their website pgchargers.org. this morning teenagers in montgomery county have some explaining to do. rescue crews had to recover them from a storm sewer. they got lost in a storm drain and used their cell phones to call for help. officers tracked them down on longdraft road in gaithersburg. the fire department did get them out of the sewer. no one was injured. a woman who survived a deadly helicopter crash in new york city has died from her injuries. divers rescued harriet nicholson from the east river after the sightseeing chopper crashed last month. the 60-year-old english tourist died this morning from complications from her injuries. her daughter and her daughter's partner were killed in the crash. nicholson's husband and the pilot survived. the national transportation safety board is investigating the accident. and this morning jury deliberations are expected to resume in the trial of dr. conrad murray. he is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of pop singer michael jackson. the jurors deliberated for more than seven hours friday before they were sent home for the weekend. seven men and five women are deciding whether dr. murray was criminally negligent or treating jackson for insomnia with the surgery anesthetic propofol. if convicted, dr. murray faces up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license. the majority of americans are fed up with both wall street and the occupy wall street movement. 35% of those surveyed had a favorable impression of the movement that began in new york city. only 16% could say the same for wall street and for large corporations. the poll has a margin of error of 3.8%. new from overnight, atlanta police have arrested an occupy protester for staying in a park past curfew. police arrested four other people on bicycles riding near the park. this comes the day after 19 demonstrators were taken to jail by officers in riot gear when a rally spilled out into the streets. on saturday, police charged the protesters for refusing to leave the park after curfew and blocking city roads. today officials in greece will meet to decide who will become the interim prime minister once george papandreu steps down. yesterday they reached an agreement to form a temporary agreement. papndreu will not lead the new government and is stepping down. the interim government will be in place for several months to ensure a european debt bailout is put in place. and this morning bank customers are now a member of credit unions and smaller banks. over the weekend, they took part in bank transfer day. the move was in response to bank of america's plan to charge a debit card monthly transaction fee. bank of america reversed the decision, but they're still experiencing a payback. >> don't go with a paper bag and say put all my money in a new account. that's not the safe way to move your money. the best way to move your money electronically and do it through process. >> norma garcia recommends leaving money in your old account if you have electronic deposits set up on your account. once everything is cleared, get a confirmation your old account is closed. the national retail federation reports that shoppers want good deals without sacrificing quality, convenience, and service. wonder how long they had to study that to figure that out. shoppers tell them those factors will help them decide how to spend their money. mark zuckerberg returns to harvard university seven years after he dropped out to create facebook. zuckerberg founded facebook in 2004. his company is now among the most popular internet services with more than 800 million registered users. you may have hundreds or thousands of contacts on facebook, but a new survey shows most of us only have a few close friends. the daily mail listed results of the study today that shows in the last six months 48% of people only discussed important issues with one other person. 18% of people considered two others close friends. 25 years ago, most people had at least three close friends. researchers say people aren't necessarily isolating themselves but considering fewer people highways, especially route 50. >> let's check with megan mcgrath, who's live on the scene with the latest. megan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. a mess for folks traveling eastbound on route 50. they've got only one lane getting by to the right because of a very serious accident here. i'll step out of the way so you can take a look at the scene here. there were three vehicles involved in this accident. two cars and a box truck. you can see that the box truck has actually flipped over onto its side, and i'm told that it's actually broken into a number of different pieces. they had a fuel spill also associated with this collision. they're trying to clean things up with this point. we have a real traffic situation here, just the one lane getting by to the far right. they've got a tow truck on the scene, and i was told pretty soon they're going to try to start getting some of the cars out of here. once they do that, they're going to liberate some more lanes. it's going to take a while to get this truck out. it might be difficult to do. they can't just throw it on the flat bed and get it out of here. we don't have a concrete idea of when lanes will reopen. they are trying to open another lane here shortly. right now just one getting by to the right. it's a slow go headed eastbound on route 50. with more on traffic, we're going to go now to danella. >> good morning. the good news in that area is traffic is light. you are passing the accident. very slowly, but, again, traffic is light. we're going to keep watching that for you all morning long. now, also on the beltway, still seeing the cones. this is on the inner loop at connecticut avenue taking up the left side of the roadway. that continues, but the good news is right now i'll give you a travel time. if you're taking the beltway, making your way from i-270 to i-95, it will only take you 11 minutes to make that trip as you travel 52 miles per hour. elsewhere on the beltway at virginia, here's the view at van dorn street. not seeing any accidents or incidents on the inner loop or outer loop. if you're heading on the wilson bridge making your way from van dorn street, it will only take you six minutes as you travel 55 miles per hour. >> it is now 4:55. 46 degrees. coming up, new concerns overnight about iran and its intentions. what a new report is saying about the country's nuclear program. nasa says we're in for a close encounter this week, a 1,500 foot in diameter asteroid is headed towards earth this morning. no real danger, apparently, but nasa says on tuesday, that's tomorrow, it will pass slightly closer than the moon's orbit. that's about 200,000 miles from earth. the space agency is taking the opportunity to do a little research on the asteroid surface, shape, and dimensions. this will be the closest an asteroid has come to earth in the last 200 years. pretty interesting. >> stay with us.
