point? >> reporter: this accident happened at about 3:00 a.m. this morning on southbound 295. and traffic has reopened again and the investigation is continuing. now, we do know there were multiple fatalities, however, the information about the victims is still not completely out because of notification issues. joining me now a sergeant schlosser. a serious incident had the road closed for a good part of the morning. >> at 2:30 this morning, the park police were investigating the accident. we have two confirmed fatalities on the scene and there were several additional okay pants in t okay pants taken to local hospitals. >> and the long close sure was due to the investigation that had to begin immediately after an sdecht like this. >> that's right, our park police reconstructionists and detectives were on the scene for several hours reconstructing the crash scene. >> we do have numbers on the number of people that were killed in this crash at this point? >> i'm confirming there are two fatalities and there were multiple okay paptss in the vehicle. >> and were there witnesses to this crash? >> i'm not sure. our detectives will be hook pog for that and that will be part of their investigation. >> thank you very much for that. instead, southbound 295 reopened after a serious accident early this morning. the investigation is no cleared up here, but it continues on other fronts. and we will have more information on this accident as it becomes available. back to you. >> we'll talk to you again later this morning. thank you, derrick. also in prince george's county, a woman was hit by a car and killed overnight. police say she was trying to cross route 210 at kirby hill road in fort washington about 12:15 this morning. the driver did stay on the scene and did cooperate. authorities say alcohol was not a factor. as federal authorities continue to search for it a maryland woman who disappeared in aruba, police search the hoemg of the man last seen with her. last night, police and the fbi searched the home of gary giordano. he was the last known person with robyn gardner who went missing while snorkeling. experts say it's good that federal authorities are getting involved early in hopes of finding guard per. >> giordano has an alleged history of violence toward women and in this case it will be good that the fbi is pro brought in early. >> giordano's court hearing is set for monday. he can only be held in aruban court for eight days and prosecutors need evidence of a crime to hold him longer. >>several people are in the hospital after a greyhound bus got into an accident on the pennsylvania turnpike. investigators say rescue crews had to free a woman who got trapped under the bus when it overturned near the lebanon lancaster exit. about two dozen were hurt. no word on the extent of the injuries. a traffic alert for you. all lanes of the outer loop of the beltway back open after being closed all night for construction on the hot lanes project. crews are working to install steam beams across the roadway. take a look at this, it's the backup around midnight near the old dominion drive overpass. traffic did ease before lanes were reopened about 8:00 this morning. a live picture of that area, lanes will close again tonight at 9:30 through 8:00 tomorrow morning. traffic is being detoured on to the dulles toll road and detour signs are up. it will be hard to avoid delays if you plan to take metro. the transit agency doing work on four of its five train lines. maintenance is on the metro red line, blue, orange and yellow, as well. trains are sharing tracks between various stations. crews are also making platform and station repairs. there is no scheduled work on the green line. should all be finished by tomorrow evening. the redskins started the preseason off in the right way downing the pittsburgh steelers. defense held the normally potent steelers offense to just 186 total yards. on the other side of the ball, washington racked up more than 450 total yards of offense. the mvp, kicker graham gano. he outscored the steelers by himself mailing three field goals. the redskins went on to win 16-7. and sure it was only a preseason game, but fans came out in force to support our team. darcy spencer was at fedex field. >> reporter: it's the first preseason game and the redskins are battling the steelers on home turf. so far fans like what they see. the skins were the first to score a touchdown. >> excellent defense. offense has a ways to go, but they moved the ball up and down the field and the defense played really great. >> reporter: redskins fans are hoping for improvements over last year's 6-10 record. the skins dumped quarterback donovan mcnabb, a disappointment for some. and it's unclear who will replace him. >> lots of energy. the redskins got a touchdown, i was happy and thrilled to see grossman accomplish that. >> they did pretty well because they scored first. >> reporter: this is the first game the skins are playing following an nfl lockout that threatened the season. some fans believe that a few games might be canceled, but no one we spoke to feared that the lockout would continue. >> we knew the players would rally and the owners would rally. we knew that would happen. >> reporter: were you concerned that the season wasn't going to happen? bolstered by a retail report that showed consumers spending more on autos, furniture, gasoline and back to school supplies. >> when you see the numbers that we saw today in retail sales, allows us to take pause and realize, wait a minute, maybe the stock market isn't the only economic indicator. >> reporter: another report showed businesses have increased their inventories of resources for the 18th month in a row. caterpillar ceo. >> well, you read the headline, it's been one thing. if you look at our core business and the day to day sales, what i hear from customers or distribute tore, it's steady as she goes. >> reporter: in fact caterpillar has hired 1,000 over the last six weeks. but the earth isn't moving for everyone. a sr. say of consumer sentiment taken over the past ten days fell to a 30 year low. no surprise with the record whiplash on wall street. >> i'm worried about all the stocks that i bought and now they're worthless. >> i don't see retirement for us. i think we'll have a long, long years of working. >> reporter: so while a week of chaos may have ended on an up, the uncertainty is unlikely to goi aw go away any i'm soon. kristen dahlgren, nbc news, washington. and the unpredictable stock market has caused major problems in virginia as public employees will, the pension fund has taken a big hit because of the uncertainty. the value has dropped by 6.4% since july 1st. that's about $3.5 billion. state officials quick to point out that while there are big drops since july, it's gone up about 20% in the past fiscal year. also taking a hit, 529 college plans. parents using 529s to help finance children's education, but a lot of states have seen major drops since july, some accounts down as much as 5%. financial analysts say that while the value has dropped, contributions have gone up as parents see an opportunity hire to buy low to help their children's future education. jobs haven't been spared in this topsy-turvy economy either. the unemployment rate stands at 9.1%. that's an improvement after we added jobs? job, but a lot of people are still asking where are the jobs? a staffing firm is here to help us answer some of these questions. if you look at d.c. particular urks what eye the picture look like? >> unemployment is significantly lower in the d.c. met row poll tan area. you're looking at about 6.2% versus that 9%. so obviously that bodes well for job seekers in this area because that means that people are hiring. >> so then where are the jobs? the low he is unemployment rates in our area. >> interestly enough, information technology being one, areas like network and computer specialists and web developers, programmers. in the legal area, attorneys, paralegals, administration assistants, executive level. and in finance and accounting, you're looking at a broad range from compliance officers to your traditionals in that area, also. >> what about areas that require typically postsecondary education and higher degrees. is there an up side in fields that aren't -- >> what i would tell you is that the numbers that we typically see are kind of spread out. so since we specialize very specifically to these area, this is more of where the focus is. also you just see companies looking at the highly more skilled individuals right now, more strategic placements, position for growth for the organization, things like that. >> so what are the skill sets that employers are looking for? >> again, information technology, finance and accounting, attorneys kind of keeping those things broad. but if or in those area, the biggest market is postgraduates above 25 has very low unemployment area, also. but it's also starting to on get competitive, which is good because that means there is a little bit of shortage in terms of those highly skill sets, also. >> is there something for people who are on the same level education wise, maybe even experience w do you get a leg up? >> you have to be pretty intense. you have to keep up your search particularly during these summer months. you don't want to take time off while other people might be taking s taking vacation, companies are still hiring. set some goals to attain a certain number of maybe business contacts or hiring contacts. both things that will keep your name out there in front of individuals. >> and i've heard people say that you have to be willing on broaden your horizons a little bit, as well? >> that's a very good point. at the end of the day, don't lock yourself into what you are maybe used to doing, but people a looking at also for transferable skills these days. so that's another way to kind of broaden your horizon in terms of the job market. >> one of the key things is that d.c., there are options out incident reports, this is the largest fire in that refuge's history. it started nine days ago when lightning struck the area. the fire's gotten so big, smoke from is visible in satellite pictures taken from space. this is something that is not uncommon for that part of southeastern virginia and the smoke, they get it in north carolina, they can see it down there. you were talking earlier about greg, i'm talking to you, that's your heavy rain shower moving over you and it extends in to portions of the eastern west virginia panhandle. so what you see is what you get. we'll have thunderstorms 13th. we'll get to the headlines, but first a quick look at our forecast. kim martucci is in for chuck bell and we're still looking at some showers. >> it's raining pretty mefly in a lot of locations. let's take a quick tour. we will start off to the east first right along route 50 this. it doesn't have any light anything, but it is putting down some decent rainfall. it's headed right over animal annapolis and points north. whitehall, you have heavy rain. a little bit of lightning with that one. sandy hook to leesburg and on over mere silver spring, we have rain, too. we're in the upper 70s. not as warm as yesterday, but certainly stormier. more to come in just a few minutes. overnight, u.s. park police are on the scene of a deadly accident in prince gornl's county. it happened on the bw parkway at 197 where a truck slammed in to a tree. derrick ward is live for us on the scene this morning with the latest developments there. >> reporter: well, there are some intermittent closures here on the bw parkway southbound near the scene of the accident, it is near the potter mill road exit just south of the exit at 197. they are me moving some of the trees that were damaged in this crash it just to give you the idea of the severity. for some reason an suv left the road in this area, struck a tree and there were several fatali fataliti fatalities. possibly members of the same family. now, this is still an active scene because they have to get some of the trees out of the way. joining me is sergeant schlosser. i understand several medevacs, as well. >> that's right. about 2:20 this morning, a vehicle roadway and went into the tree line. there were numerous people in the vehicle, two fatalities scene. we have several patients transferred to local hospitals. >> and the investigation is now turning in to finding out what caused this car to leave the road as we understand this was a single car crash. you are interested, though, in talking to any witnesses, anyone who might have been on the parkway at the time of this and has some insight in to why this happened. >> right. the united states park police detectives are still investigating the scene. if anybody did witness it, we ask they call our criminal investigation tip line at 202-610-8737. >> thank you, sergeant. and again, as we are hearing now, there are at least three fatalities in this accident. we're also hear has gone one of those may have been a baby, a child that was ejected from the vehicle. again, you can see by the damage to the trees, the impact of this, we don't know about the speed. we do county, a woman was hit by a car and killed overnight. police say she was trying to cross route 20 2 10. the driver is cooperating and alcohol is not a factor. as federal authorities join the investigation into the disappearance of a maryland woman in a rue inabout a, polic fbi searched the home of jord giorda giordano. criminal experts say it's good federal authorities are stepping in early to help with the investigation fp. >> giordano has an alleged history of violence toward women and in this particular case, it will be good that the fbi is produce the in early unlike in the holloway case. giordano's court hearing is set for monday. he can only be help for eight days and prosecutors need evidence of a crime to continue to hold him. they plan to ask for an extension on regular gasoline. this happened at the get go gas station on west patrick street in frederick. officials say a tanker dispensed diesel in to the station's unleaded tanks. the station learned about the problem after people started calling saying their cars weren't running correctly. the tanks have been cleaned out. giant eagle says they are working with individual customers to pay them back for the repairs. despite high prices at the pump, americans are not changing the types of cars we want to drive. a recent survey by auto pacific showed that only 16% of people will pick a smaller car their next vehicle and about 25% still want an suv or crossover, about 14% want a pickup truck. the same number last year. a giant food store in northwest d.c. is shutting down to make way if a huge new development project. on september 8th, the giant at 0 and 8th streets will close. it will be torn down to make way for a brand new grocery store, a nearly 200 room hotel, apartments, condos and senior living units. the pharmacy will close on august 22nd and all prescriptionses will be transferred to the safe way on l street. store officials also say they're working on a shuttle bus schedule taking
