nearly a million residents in our area drove to their holiday destinations and makinghe return trip could cause some delays. backups especially near the i-95 toll plaza in newark, delaware, however, are not expected to be as heavy as they were on wednesday. and with no threat of security line protests, air travelers should have few issues at the gate. more than 42 million people were expected to travel throughout the thanksgiving holiday. we are also following a developing story ts morning overseas. this morning china calling for an emergency meeting in homes of calming tensions among north and south korea. china wants negotiators from the six nation nuclear talks group to meet in beijing in earl december. the request came after south korea started military exercises with t u.s. navy despite warnings from north korea today. shortly after north korea fired artillery rounds but did not hit south korea. analysts say the show of force with the joint military drills won't change much. >> this is the kind of thing that we do often with the north koreans. it's just frustrating cause it's getting us nowhere. and, meanwhile, they are getting ady to build more nuclear weapons. that's the dilemma. >> a north korean attack last week killed four peopleon south korea's yeonpyeong island. today's military drills were scheduled well before that attack. today the website wikileaks expected to release classified state at the present time documents. the government warns the release could put people at risk and do damage to america's international standing. the documents include cables that are thought to include candid assessments of foreign leaders and governments. secretary of state hillary clinton is alreadyoing some damage control. she's reached out china, germany, saudi arabia, britain, and afghanistan, among others. the ste department has also sent a letter to wikilks. it says publication of the documents would be illegal and the letter demands the website stop the release. today the arcishop of washington will hold a ma of thanksgiving, but it's different than any other mass he's done before. that's because this is donald wuerl's first as cardinal. derrick ward ilive for us at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception with more on that. good morning. . >> reporter: good morning. a time the faithful usually come together but it's a special significance to this ceremony, the mass here today. now cardinal wuerl along with 23 others were elevated to the level of cardinal at a vatican ceremony last week. now he's one of only two americans elevated at last saturday's ceremony. a large contingent of local catholics gathered at the vatican last saturday, and they were among those who were actually cheered wuerl as he took part in the solemn ceremony presided over by popbenedict. now today back in washington cardinal wuerl will preside over his first mass of thanksgiving. and joining me now is susan gibbs, spokesperson for the archdiocese of washington. what will people notice first off with the first mass, with him as cardinal? >> well, some are just physical. he's wearing a red skull cap now. he has a new ring, all signs o being a cardinal and the willingness to literally shed their blood for the faith. >> reporter: now this is called a mass of thanksgiving but it doesn't necessarily connect with the holiday as we know it. it's simply a mass purely of ging thanks. >> it really is. it's great timing of course, because we have lots to be thankful for in our families and our country. it's thanksgiving the holy fathers called them to do this. there are billions of catholics in the world and 200 cardinals. it's a huge honorfor him and washington. >> reporter: as a member of the college of cardinals now, he has some influence on decisions and input and also that puts him in succession possibly for pope, correct? >> reporter: it actually does. he would be an elector for a new pope should there be a vacancy which we hope will not happen for years, and he's a special advise aror. he's someone the pope will be able to call on for his input in different issues and already did. the first day before he was made cardinal, 150 of them were gathered with the holy father talking about religious liberty and sex abuse. >> reporter: excellent. he's also now going to greet parishioners after the cemony, correct? >> he is. a lot of the people will be the first time they get to see him, e the ring, and wish him well r everything he has ahead of him and wish him good luck and many prayers. >> reporter: and the fir time many people will meet a card that will. >> as we saw in rome over 400 people were in rome just for this. we were the loud eest contingen among the 24 new cardinals, i have to admit. and i think a lot of people are just very, very excited. he's now archbishop here in washington but he's a representati of the whole world. we're getting e-mails and calls from around the rld. >> repter: excellent. so after the mass the ceremony will be at noon? [ cheers and applause [ male announcer ] achievement gets points for ving life. earn pnc points for your credit and debit card purchases. ♪ find out more at pnc.com/getpoints. pnc. for the achiever in us all. authorities in new zealand say burning coal and a fourth explosion are keeping them from recovering 29 miners who died underground. heavy smoke and flames are coming from the coal mine ventilation shaft. a buildup of methane gas caused the initial explosion more than a week ago. crews are considering sealing the mine so oxygen c't fuel the fire. another plan includes using a jet powered engine to blast nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor into the mine. a story out of michigan this morning where an amber alert has been issued for three little boys. you see them here, 9-year-old andrew, 7-year-old alexander, and 5-year-old tanner have been missing since their father allegedly tried to commit suicide on friday. police say the father told a woman to take the boys to their mother. police can't confirm, though, that the woman even exists. the father has not been named a suspect by police and now in a mental health facility. this morning we are learning more about a suspected bomb plot foiled by the fbi. agents say a 19-year-old naturalized citizen tried to detonate a van packed with explosives at a crowded holiday event in portland, oregon. ttle did he know the bombs were fake. nbc's pete williams has more now on the investigation. >> reporter: as the crowd in portland jammed into pioneer square for the christmas tree lighting -- >> happy holidays! >> reporter: -- a man hurried there in a van carrying what he thought was a powerful bomb, parking it in this spot just across the street hoping, the fbi says, to kill as many people as possible. what he did not know is that the bomb was a dud, the culmination of an elaborate sting. >> it looked real. it was meant to be so the suspect believed it was a real device. >> reporter: federal agents say they arrested mohamed osman mohamud, a 19-year-old student born in somalia, now a naturalized u.s. citizen, as he tried to detonate the fake bomb. the fbi says it began investigating him last spring while he was a student at oregon state university. court documents say he exchanged e-mails with someone he thought was connected to terrorists in pakistan but who turned out to be working undercor for the fbi. in late june, he began meeting in portland with that undercover operative d another also posing as a terrorist. the fbi says he told them he wanted to bomb the tree lighting ceremony, frustrated that he couldn't get overseas to join in jihad. court documes say they asked him, you know there's going to be a lot of children there? does and how we are able to go out into the community and help others that are in the most need. >> the salvation army says it's seen an 80% drop in donations at giant stores. the grocery chain has limited days and hours bell ringers can stand outside its stores. 22 children celebrated thanksgiving with new falies this year. the adoptions became official last weekend ia special ceremonynd our was a welcome from the honorable william jackson providing judge of the d.c. family court. lots of kids and soon-to-be new pares waited for their turn for center stage. before that, they got to hear music, remarks from the honorable lee satterfield, chief judge of t d.c. superior court, a welcome from the freddie mac foundation who helps to sponsor the event, and even the youngest among them sat quietly through a keynote addresfrom deborah lee of b.e.t. who talked about the importance of family. >> that we all he a responsibility to pay it forward. >> reporter: one by one each child with their new family was called forward. these siblings were wednesday's children once. finally going home with a forever family. and among those being adopted on this it day, a young man who h grown up a lot since we first met him on wednesday's child. he was featured in 2005 and again in 2007 as he was still waiting and hoping for a permanent home. there was hardly a dry eye in the courtroom when we told the story of how he finally found a loving family. >> this is my mom. this is my brother. >> reporte thomas spent most of his young life moving foster home to foster home. when his best friend at
