grave condition. after the shooting, one resident, who wasn't awakened by gunfire, was dealt a rude awakeninging of another kind. >> came and woke me up at 3:30 this morning and said my back window had been shot out. bullets were in my front seat. shot out my tires. all in case a young man got shot. >> now, that young man is in grave condition at an area hospital with one of a number of violent incidents overnight and early this morning. a shooting on gavel stron street southwest. a stabbing at midnight and shooting on second street southeast. there is one fatality in that violent overnight people are seriously hurt this morning after they were hit by a car just stems aw steps away from the washington monument. police say the man and woman in their 50s were in a crosswalk when the cab hit them. both taken tie nearby hospital. both have life threatening injuries. it's still unclear what caused the taxi to hit them. friends are remembering an avid cyclist this morning who was killed possibly by a drunk driver. stan miller was riding his bicycle home from work in germantown friday evening when an suv swerved out of its lean and hit him. quincy frazier, the driver of that suv, did stay on the scene. but police say they detected alcohol on his breath and took him into custody to have alood sample taken. those who knew miller say it's hard to lose a good friend and father over what may have been poor judgment. >> when you're driving a car, it's a huge responsibility. you're driving a weapon. and to be doing that when you're not in control of all your faculties is terrible. on the other hand, i'm sure the person never meant for the outcome that happened to happen. >> frazier did refuse a breathalyzer. police say he resisted having his blood taken. he's been charged with resisting arrest and second degree assault on a police officer. charges are pending in connection with that fatal crash. this morning we're learning more about what landed former vice president dick cheney in the hospital for the weekend. nbc news confirmed chaipy had an irregular heartbeat a few weeks ago. the former vp checked in to george washington university hospital friday afternoon citing discomfort. he has a progressive retention of fluid related to coronary artery disease. cheney has had five heart attacks. he received i.v. medication and is feeling much better. it seemed like countries attending the g-20 summit are agreeing with disagree. the united states is urging countries to continue to use stimulus spending as a way of combatting the global economic recession. >> reporter: as president obama sat down with his world counterparts in canada, there were concerns about the global economic crisis. u.s. treasury secretary timothy geithner says the scars are still healing. >> coming out of the fires of the crisis. because we acted together, the economy is now growing again. trade is expanding. and we are repairing the financial damage. >> u.s. and european leaders are at odds where to go next. germany and france favor fiscal discipline. paying down deficits. the americans are afraid of smothering economic growth. new british prime minister cameron is siding with the europeans. >> focusing on spending reductions rather than on big tax increases. and i think that's the right approach to take. >> still, president obama says there are areas of differences. meanwhile, china has agreed to its undervalued currency but it is not bowing to international pressure. violent protests at the summit continue to be a concern. while most demonstrations are peaceful, a rogue group torched police cars and smashed windows yesterday. police have arrested more than 150 people. happening today, metro will require you to bring a little extra change. metro fare hike in today. it will go up 30 cents to 1$1.9 on the rails. on the bus expect to pay $1.50 for smart trip and $1.70 if you're using cash. this is only phase one of the hike. another hike is planned for august 1st. metro expects the hike to cover an almost $2 million budget shortfall. montgomery county's ride-on system is increasing fares. they will be the same as the new metro buses. route 70 will go to $3.65. kids will no longer be able to ride free but discount passes are available. tropical storm alex appears to be avoiding the oil spill. so far alex is heading far southwest of the leak. chuck bell says the storm has already made landfall in belize. even though the gulf oil region may avoid a direct hit from alex, the area is not out of the woods. hurricane season just getting started. and there are concerns about a storm hitting the spill area. if that were to happen, the coast guard has an emergency plan that would evacuate 38,000 workers and nearly 6,000 vessels inland. this alone would setback recovery efforts by about two weeks. it would be like day one get, starting all over. >> if you have an oil spill as big as this one and you have a hurricane or even a tropical storm, the combination of that is not going to be good. >> right now bp is collecting about 25,000 barrels of oil a day. the best hope of stopping the gushing wells, two relief wells on track to be completely mid-august. american soccer fans are probably still feeling the pain this morning. it was a hard night for team usa, who had to fight back in a tough night against ghana. u.s. went down 1-0 early in the game but kept battling and they were able to tie the game, forcing extra time. people watched intently much of the time yesterday afternoon. the extra period proved to be too latest. >>reporter: actually, we're in northwest. we're on 17th street, about a block south of columbia road. people are out walking their dogs, riding bikes, on their way to church. a typical sunday morning. it's a stark contrast to the violence that played itself out on this very block this morning. now, in the aftermath, bullet-riddled cars and a young man gravely wounded in the street. gunfire rang out 2:30 in the 2500 block of 17th street. when it was over, police found an unidentified man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he was rushed to an area hospital and remains in grave condition. the resident was awakened by police about his vehicle. >> an officer came and woke me up about 3:30 this morning and said my back window had been shot out. bullets had come up into my front seat. she shot out my tires also all in the case of a young man being shot. >> the victim remains in grave condition. it was one of several violent incidents that occurred late last night in the district. he was fatally shot 68 galveston street and second street southeast left a man wounded and a stabbing in the 5100 block northeast that left a male victim in critical condition as well. police don't have much -- are not releasing much in the way of suspect descriptions or victim identification. they will be visiting in ensuing days after a violent start to the weekend. live in in germantown friday evening when an suv swerved out of its lane and hit him. news 4's darcy spencer has more on the investigation and the man whose life was cut short. >> stan was an all-around good guy. >> reporter: 48-year-old stan miller struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while he was riding his bike home from work friday morning. dorian owns the house where he rented a room for the last seven years. >> played fabulous guitar. was a scientist. was a daddy to nicky. she's only 21 years old. she's going to miss him incredibly. >> reporter: montgomery county police say miller was riding on the paved shoulder just after 7:00 p.m. they say quincy frazier of clarksburg, driving a chevy tahoe, veered onto the shoulder and hit miller. they were both traveling north. >> officers detected an odor of alcohol from the driver. they briefly took him into custody, where they obtained a sample of his blood. >> reporter: police say frazier refused to take a breathalyzer so he was taken to the hospital where he allegedly resisted getting his blood drawn. >> at one point the driver did offer some resistance to the officers. and separate from the circumstances surrounding the collision. he was arrested and charged with resisting arrest. >> reporter: friends say miller was an avid bicyclist and would often ride for hundreds of miles here and overseas. >> when you're driving if you have an oil spill as big as this one and you have a hurricane or even a tropical storm, the combination of that is not going to be good. >> alex may not be a direct threat for now but the hurricane season is just getting started. >> we're predicted to have a hurricane season. an active hurricane season. all the vessels will have to be moved out. >> reporter: the coast guard calls it
