how you can take one home. >> dogs and cats downtown. we'll have more on nbc 4. good morning and welcome to the 9:00 edition of news 4 today. it's saturday, october 9 -- october 10th, rather. we're going to look at the forecast with chuck bell. good morning, chuck. >> good morning. our weekend getting ready to get underway. plenty of clouds this morning and light rain as well. very light rain. sprinkles moving in. a few sprinkles moving int fairfax county and toward charlottesville. not much in the way of rain expected. less than 1/10 of an inch. 73 in downtown now. 69 degrees in fairfax county. 67 in germantown. dew points, upper 60s to 70 in town. signs of drier air moving in. most rainshowers will be gone by noontime. generally, the skies become sunnier and sunnier. >> sounds nice, thank you. we are continuing to follow a story in bethesda. police are searching for a gunman who shot an economist inside his own garage. we talked neighbors on edge. >>reporter: residents of kenwood park paid a homeowners fee for this service in a very safe neighborhood. it makes thursday night's shooting of a monetary fund official all the more troubling. >> i oom the ims mission chief to germany. >> reporter: he was shot in the neck as he pulled into his garage at 7:30 p.m. some neighbored heard at least three gunshots. his wife returned to the home friday morning along with her two sons, both college students. neighbors are very concerned. >> i think it was a detective. he was in plain clothes. he had a gone in a hoster. he gets out of the car and says do you live around here. i said yes. he said you need to get home now. >> reporter: they released a statement saying we are shocked and saddened by the attack on our colleague. he's well known at the fund as one of the most esteemed economis economists. a valued member of the fund family. police investigars returned to the scene friday. they were able to give little new information about the motive of this crime. >> we don't want to ignore opportunity for gathering any piece of evidence. we continue to look at a lot of different factors and motivations as to why our victim would have been shot. >> reporter: he remains hospitalized, in critical condition. his survivor through the first night is the cause of great optimism for his family. jackie bensen, news 4, today. george washington university is on alert this weekend because of a random attack inside a building on campus. it happened around 3:00 yesterday. it happened at gws business school building. this man, who is not a student or teacher, walked in and assaulted the student. it's not clear what provoked the attack. we are hearing explosive and chilling audio tapes at the center of an investigation. it features leon swain and another man. swain was working as an undercover government informans. he's one of the main suspects to get unauthorized taxi cab licenses. he was promising to kill a man giving information to the fbi. >> i will eliminate him. you will see. eliminated, soon. >> where is he at now? >> permanently? permanently, i will eliminate him. don't worry. >> one question. how long before we know he's [ inaudible ] >> come to me. i will tell you. >> the chief of staff to counselman jim graham is caught up in the scandal. jim graham's office is cooperating fully with authorities. dozens of pets have arrived in d.c. the humane society brought about 80 dogs and some cats to the rescue league where they are up for adoption. finding a good home is as much a moral obligation as rescuing them. for more information about adopting one of the animals call the animal rescue league at 202-726-2556 or warl.org. washington humane society is hoping to find homes for every dog and cat today. they are holding an annual walk for animals. we are going to go toçó the national mall now. derrick ward is live there. good morning. >> good morning. there are more people than dogs down here now. that will soon change. you might thank constitution gardens. it's the humane society's walk for the animals. we have been telling you about the dogs and cats of animals rescued from the puppy mill brought to our area. they are the lucky ones. joining me now is sabrina, she's with the humane society. when things get bad in terms of the economy, do you see more animals not cared for like they should be? >> less people are coming to adopt animals. we take care of 30,000 animals through the year. it's hard to feed another mouth. we are hoping people take time-out to come to this walk and then think about the animals that need homes. >> how easy is it to adopt an animal? >> it's easy. have our website, washhumane.org. you can see the dogs and cats. so many need loving homes. >> are they ready for adoption? do you select the animals that fare best in a new environment? >> absolutely. they are assessed by behavioral measures. we can cater to it. pick out a dog for you that will go on walks, jogs and hikes. if you have families with kids, we know what dogs are best for kids. >> what goes on down here today? you have a lot of exhibits and activities here. >> we are expecting 500 to 600 dogs. we raised $100,000 for the event. there's plenty to do for the dogs and kids. there's face painting. doggie yoga and we're hoping the rain will hold off so this event won't be too wet. >> indeed. registration starts at 9:30?
