were doing training exercise in which officers pretended to fire on a boat that breached security in the potomac river not far from the pentagon. to someone monitoring a police scanner, their internal communications would have sounded very real. that's just what cnn staffers were doing. the network soon broadcast a report. it was the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. the president was at a pentagon ceremony. there was a period of concern and confusion. d.c. police chief lanier says fortunately harvard patrol officers were not far way. >> we found out about it once the exercise began and we did have harbor boats out there. we were quickly able to determine that was an exercise. the aftermath was letting everybody else know it was an exercise. >> reporter: departures from national airport were delayed for about 20 minutes. the faa released a statement that said it is not typical for the faa to make decisions based on media reports. but when there are reports of shooting on the potomac, the situation needs to be checked out. the coast guard defended its training. >> we will look at our procedures and our timing of the exercise but i will tell you this. we are charged with seven by 24/365, all day, every day, all weather, security and safety. >> cnn released a statement that said in part, given the circumstances, it would have been irresponsible not to report what we attacks by giving. giving back in the memory of that day's victims. in northeast students from eastern senior high school gathered to refurbish and rededicate a m at the now closed bernie backus middle school. asia had just started the sixth grade at backus and she along with her teacher, 65-year-old tera clark, were aboard american flight 77 flown into the pentagon. >> we watched it on tv and then i began to cry because i felt so sad, my life was going toned. >> reporter: today is her birthday and turned 9 years old on the day of the attacks. high school senior did not know either of the victims but felt compelled to honor their memory. >> they are together and remembering them also on this day. >> reporter: at rfk more than 200 volunteers showed up for another project. they spent the day making quilts for the children of deployed troops. the image of the deployed service member is sewn into the pattern of the quilt. >> so they have something of comfort to keep and stay with them. the quilts go across the country from children of those deployed soldiers. >> reporter: remembering those that have been thrust into harm's way after the events of that terrible day or those who were lost on it. volunteers not only spent the anniversary looking back but they preserved memories for the future. >> when someone said what did you do on 9/11, why didn't you sit in class, i went out and we restored a memorial for those that lost their lives. >> ernie backus middle school is expected to become part of the new community college system for you to see. for now, the memorial for sport? >> for the nation's triathlon, it is an olympic distance event. olympic distance triathlon. 1.5 kilometer swim just under a mile. and then it is a 40 kilometer bike ride. 24.8-mile bike. finish in portions of pennsylvania right now. no rain across our area at this point in time. but some of those showers may in fact pinwheel back into northern maryland and northern suburbs here during the course of the day. rainfall amount chances on average about 30% chance of rain today. so most of us will have a dry but cloudy saturday. temperatures are in the mid 60s now with dew points mostly in good. come back here. you know, high school. and, you know, show how much we care about the kids. you know, how willing we are to work with them and give them the opportunity to get better. >> hereith dream come true. when i got drafted, i know the feeling i got. when he got drafted i was right with him. he was with me as well. >> i was sitting there. my name called. you know, they called my name. crazy feeling. they walked to the podium and call your name and it is you. i thought wow, it is a blessing. >> reporter: do you feel like this is an opportunity for you to step out of vernon's shadow a little bit and make more after name for yourself? >> yes, of course. i tried that going into illinois. >> reporter: is that why you went to maryland? >> exactly. >> he chose not to go to illinois because he knew i was first team all american, first team all acc. you know, accomplishment,he couldn't do it. so he went to illinois. it is okay. >> look, i had may own accomplishments at the same time. >> reporter: had you a learning experience had you to go through when you were benched in the game because of the face mask. how did you deal with that and what did you learn from that? it was very public. >> it was very frustrating for me in the beginning. but -- you know, first thing hit my mind, don't make a fool out yourself. listen to the coach because he is the head guy. listen to him. i listened to him and grabbedy helmet and went inside. then the next day, we had a meeting. and pretty much -- you know, let everything go. just -- something you have to deal with upon. and it takes time. i mean, now we are like best friends. >> was that something when you watched the incident you were able to learn from? how was that for as a brother? >> yes. i mean, i learned from the situation. called and talked to him. asked him what happened. you know. i'm worrying about -- i want to know what comes on with my brother as well where i'm going. . >> that was lindsay czarniak.
