middle of the street. >> the day was gray. the mood was somber. protesters gathered here in freedom plaza, calling for justice in the killing of an unarmed black teenager in it florida. good evening, i'm chris gordon. they wore hoodies in honor of trayvon martin. he was wearing one when he was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer. that man, george zimmerman, claimed self defense and has not been charged. but the teenager, it turns out, was armed with only skittles and iced tea. news4's derrick ward joins us live from freedom plaza, where protesters today demanded zimmerman's arrest. derek? >> reporter: well, you know, gordon, it's been nearly a month since this incident happened, and zimmerman's claims of self defense have yet to be heard in a court of law. but today the it was the court of public opinion that was in session. >> we are trayvon! >> reporter: they gathered on the steps of the wilson building. they spilled out into freedom plaza across the street. the numbers and the passion had grown exponentially. they came to hear calls for justice and some soul-searching. >> i asked myself, what kind of society do i live in, in which i can walk down the street and not only be hunted down because of my physical appearance, but also because -- also have my murderer go unprosecuted. >> we are not here to debate a so-called hold your ground law. because i am telling you, that the one person that night who had the right to hold his ground and fight for his life is trayvon martin. >> reporter: and almost every parent at the rally reflected upon the lessons they must now impart upon their young children who could well find themselves in a situation like the one in sanford, florida, where martin was confronted by someone who decided the teen was out of place when he wasn't. law professor lisa cruise robinson says for her and her son, there has been a dialogue. >> he said, i have rights. and i said yes, you do have rights. but it's about diffusing the situation so you can assert your rights later rather than assert your rights at the onset and run the risk of being murdered. >> whatever your race, whatever your religion, this is just a tragedy. and i wanted my children to see it, and my wife wanted our children to see it. because today it's trayvon. tomorrow it could be any of us. >> reporter: and then the haunting poem told from the perspective of the 17-year-old. >> my life flashed before my eyes. he hunted me down like i was his prey and it was time for him to kill me! i called a couple more times, but no one came to rescue me! then boom! >> reporter: now, this case is expected to go before a grand jury on april 10th. and there are more protests scheduled in the meantime. at freedom plaza, reporting live, derrick ward, news4. right now, an eight-hour stand offis under way in prince george's county. police are trying to get a man who barricaded himself inside his apartment to come out peacefully. it started around 10:00 this morning in the 2500 block of kent town place in landover. police say a man fled a hit and run accident and ran inside an apartment. officers evacuated the surrounding buildings. police say the man from the other car in the accident is okay. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked the deadliest fire in more than 60 years in west virginia's capital city. the early morning blaze killed a family of eight, including six children, all under the age of 8. another child is on life support. neighbors say the family was hosting a birthday party last night. charleston firefighters found one smoke detector in the house, but it was not working. early voting in maryland is now under way. today, voters headed to the polls in silver spring. early voting in d.c. also began this week. both d.c. and maryland will hold their primaries april 3rd. meanwhile, louisiana has its primary today, while the results will probably not be a game-changer. all of the gop candidates are hoping for some momentum. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: louisiana. it's ground zero today in the gop presidential primary race, and as voters headed to the polls, rick santorum and newt gingrich are fighting to stop mitt romney from extending his delegate lead. gingrich has been hammering away at president obama's energy policy. >> so you could argue that the obama solution is walk for a decade and the algae will be ready. >> reporter: gingrich campaigned in the upcoming battlegrof pennsylvania. that is santorum's home turf. and after beginning his day there, the former senator was off to fight for d.c. neighborhood got a new look today. it happened in mt. vernon square. the building housing the hodges sandwich shop was moved, literally, right across the street. crews closed off new york avenue between 6th and 7th streets for several hours. hodges first began serving sandwiches in 1898. it was moved to make room for a new office building. well, keeping your identity safe and protecting the environment, those were two of the goals for today's nbc washington pnc bank community this is red event. 1,500 cars lined up in rockville. this was the largest shred event ever held in montgomery county. each person got up to four boxes of papers shredded for free. and all of the paper will be recycled. nbc 4 and pnc bank says thanks to everyone who participated. up next, you've heard of a of people across the country and here at home are opening their wallets today in order to boost the local economy. they call themselves cash mobs. news4's darcy spencer is live in d.c.'s shaw neighborhood, where plenty of people are cashing in on this shopping spree. hi, darcy. >> reporter: hi, chris. all you need to do to participate in today's cash mob is to have 20 bucks and the desire to support local independent businesses. they watch from the mt. vernon metro station with cash in hand ready to buy. the target, the old city green business at 9th and n streets in the shaw neighborhood of northwest d.c. once inside this so-called cash mob went to work buying and supporting this local business that was once a vacant lot. >> i got some petunias, and i was looking for something for a planter on my front porch. >> reporter: the event is part of international cash mob day, sponsored by think local first d.c., which use social media to draw in customers. >> i think it's really fun. think local d.c. organized this event to kind of support local businesses, and drive a big burst of traffic, i guess, to a local business and everybody bring cash, buy something, and it's, you know -- the reins held out, which is great. >> i like it, because i have been here a lot and they have good flowers. >> reporter: more than 170 organizations around the world are mobbing retailers today. think local was hoping for about 100, at least a couple dozen showed up. >> d.c. has such a strong, independent business community. we think -- think local first has 300-plus independent businesses we support on a daily basis. and it's important for us to bring consumers into the business so they can stay open. >> reporter: the mobbers are spending at least 20 bucks in cash, and for the owner of old city green, he appreciates the business here at his urban garden. >> i'm competing with the big businesses, like home depot or lowe's, and we need to survive. we need to really, like, reach our roots out to the neighborhood. >> reporter: old city green was selected at least in part because of all it does to give back to the local community and neighborhood. reporting sunshine. today nowhere near 83 degrees with all of the clouds and the drizzle and the rain out there. it's been kind of a dreary looking saturday afternoon. so the big question is, can we make it any nicer on your sunday? kinda sorta. let's look outside now on your saturday afternoon, turning into a saturday evening, cloudy and drizzly and damp and kind of not the best-looking day to be outside today. hasn't rained all that hard, but it sure has been enough to get you wet and make you mad. 58 right now here in washington with an east breeze at 13 miles per hour. that easterly wind is a big part of the forecast here over the next 24 to 36 hours. we have been stuck with that onshore easterly wind. 50s and low 60s. just out to the west and south, the sunshine was out almost all afternoon, south of winchester, it's 71 in charlottesville right now, and 70 in fredericksburg. generally speaking, hovering in the low 60s through your saturday evening with off and on chances for showers and maybe some rumbles of thunder after 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 this evening. on the radar, nothing around here. flash flood watches out for harrssonburg and stanton and charlottesville, auto part of a larger more dynamic weather system. severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00, just south of la ray, really from harrssonburg through the southern end of the shenandoah and roanoke valleys. and big severe weather down just to the east of roanoke. a big thunderstorm going just to the south sides of lynchburg, generating 2 to 3-inch diameter hail. so big down to our southwest. we're stuck around here with the drizzle. but the timing on this is going to ride these showers and thunderstorms up to the neck of the schehenandoah valley over t next two or three hours and then might get a couple rumbles in here late this evening. for your evening, cloudy, mild, stronger thunderstorms in the shenandoah valley, not much of a severe threat in washington, thanks to the cool, marine layer we have outside. then tomorrow, mostly cloudy, scattered showers, one or two rumbles tomorrow. but a 71-degree day in march. we can't complain too much about that. it will not be a washout, but there will be off and
