received the call at 6:30 last night. search efforts started at that time. >> reporter: the search focused around the point not far from shore. the 20-foot craft exrienced trouble d began taking in water. >> near the stern of the vessel. we don't recommend anchoring a veel this way. the start is towards the waves coming in and the waves came into the boat. >> reporter: a jet-skier on shore heard the men's cry for help. somehow, he was able to reach two of the men on the darkened river and get them to shore. bourne had become separated with them. >> i know some time has gone by, but i'm still hoping and praying and wishing. >> reporter: but the wai ended sadly when bourne's body was recovered some 120 yards from where the boat sank. a massive overnight fire destroyed a house that was almost complete. neighbors awakened to the flames. darcy spencer is live on the scene tonight where the fire got so big it nearly damaged some of the neighboring homes. >> reporter: that's right. i talked to the next door neighbor of the house. he said he was asleep this morning, but was awakened by someone drivg througthe neighborhood honking their horn. th may have saved his life. these charred ruins are all that's left of what was supposed to be the owner's dream home. a home neighbors say he had been working on for years and was finally nearincompletion. >> it's been several years now, kind of on and off and lately, i would say it was coming around. it lked like it was definitely getting there. >> on the inside of this window was actually melted. >> reporter: wayne live next door. his house was damaged by the heat from the flames. his siding was melted and outer windows were broke >> flames were 50 feet in the air. firefightersid a great job of saving our house. reporter: he says the house had become an eyesore. he says he complained to the county, but all he could force the owner to do was put in a port a john, which al melted. >> start and stop. start and stop. i was kind of tired living at a construction site, but now, i've got to live next to a burnt out disaster. >> reporter: they are alerted to the fire about 4:30 in the morning. >> tomorrow morning, we'll have a fresh crew out to doing the orgin and cause, where we're actually digging and removing the debris. but right now, it's officially under investigation. >> reporter: the fire also damaged utility and communications lines. some neighbors say they lost phone and internet service. >> we had no service, hoping to get it back at 6:00 tonight. i walk my boys to school here every day. it's directly across the street >> reporter: the investigation will startomorrow morning. they plan to bring heavy equipment out here to figure out what caused the fire anhow it started. back to you. >> thank you. tonight, d.c. police are trying to figure out who shot a woman dead in southeast this morning. it happened around 12:30 this morning in the 1200 block of eaton road. police say when they got to the
