disabled son. it happened just before 9:00 this morning in the 1600 block of clarion terrace in fort washington. >> reporter: police have released the names of the mother and son. the son has been identified as tracy cordor a 39-year-old and his mother is patricia cordol. someone discovered a suicide note taped to the door, left by the mom. >> i'm just overwhelmed. i'm just overwhelmed, because i never saw anything strange or anything from her, or got any indication that something was wrong. >> people who live in this quiet fort washington suburb say they were shocked to hear what happened with the mother and son who lived in this home. >> preliminarily, we believe the mother took the son's life and then took her own life. >> police and neighbors say the mother was in her 60s, and her son who was a quadroplegic was in his 30s and they lied in this home alone. neighbors say her son was able to work and drive, but required extreme care from his mother, who recently discovered that she herself was suffering from a terminal illness. >> she told me she was having trouble with pains in her chest. i said have you gone to the doctor? please go to the doctor. that's the last conversation i had. and i had an idea she was very sick because i hadn't seen her. >> police say a handgun was recovered inside of the home. they are now awaiting tests to confirm that it was the web used. >> meanwhile, there's shock in this community about those who thought erg was fine, including the gardner who said the mother called him just last friday to come cut the grass today. >> i actually heard it on the radio coming around the corner. and it just -- just said wheelchair-bound son with a mother. i pulled up and i seen you guys and i said say it ain't so. >> the gardener tells us the son explained to him his mom was suffering from cancer. >> her son even informed me, she told me, she had cancer. asked me to be especially careful with her, you know, do whatever needs she wanted, regardless how silly some of her things were. but i told her no problem. i totally understood. and i don't understand why she took her life. >> reporter: now the evening nurse who has been working with the son since the mother took ill showed up here this evening and did not know about what happened. when we spoke her, she said she had been having conversations with the mother and had charged as an adult with murder in the death of a toddler in maryland. the -year-old girl was found dead in her bed in annapolis. police believe she was beaten. height was alone with the 2-year-old. her mother is not been charged in the attack. helen thomas retired today shortly after a white house spokesman described helen thomas' comments as reprehensible. jane? >> the resignation of helen thomas came after the white house correspondents association called her remarks indefensible and began to consider whether the 89-year-old should continue to have the privilege of front-row seating in the briefing room. a pioneering female correspondent with a front and center seat at the white house, helen thomas has covered every president, going back to john f. kennedy. but her storied journalistic year imploded over the weekend after this video surfaced showing thomas telling a new york rabbi what she thought of the situation in the middle east. >> tell them to get the hell out of the chick crowd of crude continues to bubble into the gulf, the cap is apparently doing a better job of trapping some of the oil. the current estimate is 11,000 barrels a day. the white house obama had more tough talk for bp today during a cabinet briefing on the spill. he warned officials to fully compensate those affected. >> you don't have a shrimp processor or a fisherman who's going out of business before bp finally makes up its mind as to whether or not it's going to pay out. i do not want to see bp nickel and diming these businesses. >> the amount of oil that leaks will help determine the fine that bp occurs. so while our interests align on capping this well, we would never ask bp to tell us how much oil they think it's leaked. >> meanwhile,ed that allen says the oil will last. three people were killed and half a dozen more were injured. at least ten people are missing. firefighters are unable to get close to the line because of all the heat from the fire. now several people were injured after an early morning mine explosion in west virginia. the explosion that followed sent flames, at least 70 feet into the air. seven workers were burned in the blast, but all of them are expected to be okay. according to an inspector, the same company had drilled through the mine before without problems. police in peru are questioning joran van der sloot right now. he's the suspect in a death of a woman from lima. five years ago in aruba, he was questioned several times about the disace peerns of an american teenager named natalee holloway. >> a local radio network is reporting that jor van der sloot is under a -hour protective suicide watch as he continues to undergo interrogations at theth police headquarters here in lima. we're getting a tantalizing look at law and order peruvian style. a local television network has obtained inside police video showing the interrogation process as van der sloot was introduced to tkts as they started asking him questions and going through his belongings, all of it now considered evidence in the murder of stephany flores. during the process, van der sloot spoke in broken but passable spanish. >> authorities are going to continue this investigation for several days. after that, a very, very, long legal process. authorities say going to trial and a final judgment in this case could take two to three years. just days after stephany flores was killed, joran van der sloot allegedly told natalee holloway's family. he said he would allegedly describe where she is and how she died for $250,000. still ahead, a busy weekend for rescuers out west. more than a dozen people had to be cull pulled from the virginia river. >> tough to come to work. >> this morning felt like a gift as far as the hot weather over the pressure moves in. while we're at 76 degrees again, the lower heat across the area. but what really has made it feel so nice and refreshing outside are the lower dew point temperatures. we're down some 15 to about 20 degrees through the area. d.c. to richmond, that's the drop over the last 24 hours. so 50 degrees right now. our dew point temperature, that brings us well down into the comfort zone. it's on friday and the early part of the weekend where we'll get a little bit of sticky stuff back. 65 to 69 will be where our dew point temperatures will be at the end of the work week. severe weather, ohio to illinois over the weekend. on sunday over the last 24 hours, it's coming off the rockies. a new weather system producing weather. that's this low pressure system. what we're going to see with it is a lot of the same elements coming together. the winds aloft are very fast. the winds from out of the surface are out of the southwest. bringing up a lot of moisture. so as these two come together, we're seeing a change in wind direction with height. hence the big tornado outbreak that we saw from ohio into areas of ohio even western pennsylvania. this is the low pressure system coming eastward. except some rain first thing on wednesday. we're not going to have a severe weather outbreak on wednesday, but we could have some embedded thunderstorms with the next low pressure system that comes in. here's your next 2 to 48 mourps we'll see clouds, just a few high clouds tomorrow. high pressure will be making its way over us, and then east. and then here we are early wednesday with a southeasterly wind. so kind of drizzly to start things out on wednesday. then we could get just a few breaks in the cloud cover and maybe a couple of thunderstorms for the afternoon and evening. the weather front comes in and finally through. cool, a delightful evening. mid 70s to the upper 60s. by tomorrow morning, you might need a jacket again. up to a high of 80 degrees. we'll premature labor. darcy center has the latest from rockville. >> according to court documents, christine davoe was wearing the victim's clothing, a surgical cap and gloves when she tasered a woman on sugar cane lane friday afternoon you can forcing the woman into labor. authorities say davoe was fate daiting the victim's phatner law. she said she, the husband and her baby were interfering with her relationship. >> owe've never had any major crisis like this ever. so everybody is in shock that they're saying sugar cane lane? no way. it's pretty surprising. >> according to prosecutors and court documents, devoe got into her house by copying her boyfriend's keys. somehow the victim was able to break free after about 30 minutes of being tasered and beaten. she ran to a neighbor's house and called for help. >> the victim in this case really did fight off her attacker and made her own escape. she was not let go. she made her own escape. we salute her for that. she's a very brave woman. >> police also found trash bags and 50 feet of wiring in the house. devoe was cracked down to a hotel many frederick. >> a pregnant woman is held to a higher esteem by society in general. it's egregious. >> the 38-year-old suspect worked as an economist from 1997 to 2004. her attorney says she graduated from george washington university and was studying medicine in new zealand until she was recently injured in a bike accident. devoe's attorney gave no explanation for her actions but he did say she has no prior criminal record. she was ordered to be held without bond and we're told mother and baby so far are doing okay. in rockville, darcy spencer, news 4. a maryland man who admitted to snatching a chihuahua and throwing it off a bridge in a fit of anger was sentenced today. a frederick judge sentenced 35-year-old david biers to four months in prison. he also has to pay $318 in restitution to the dock ear owners. >> five employees have been removed from active duty after a 10-car train was mistakeningly put into service on an eight-car platform. people boarded the first eight cars then were asked to exit the train when it got to the waterfront station. the train was taken out of the service and returned to the rail yard. the workers were all removed from duty. >> voters will go to the polls in virginia in about 12 hours to cast their vote in a republican primary. polls will open at 6:00 a.m. and stay open till 7:00 p.m. virginia's first, eighth and 11th congressional district. voter turnout is not expected to be high. construction workers are laying the foundation for the
