that home was ripped apart. >> i saw blood. i saw a guy pretty much get st in his chest. leg. >> reporter: a firestorm of bullets rained down on dozens of soldiers, at least 13 were killed. a few of those victims are now being identified. 21-year-old michael pearson of illinois. 29-year-old amy kruger from wisconsin and 56-year-old john gaffney from california. 30 others were injured and rushed to area hospitals. >> there was no region of the body in which there was not an injury in these patients. we had gun shot wounds to the head, neck, chest, abdomen and extremities. >> reporter: army investigators say the most deadly attack ever on a u.s. military post was carried out by one of their own, major nidal malik hasan. >> i tell you candidly this was a kick in the gut for our entire army. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows the alleged gunman a few hours before the attack. a regular customer at the convenience store, the clerk says nothing seemed out of the ordinary thursday morning. and senior officers at ft. hood say they saw no indication of problems either. >> honestly, my personal experience with him is he did not raise any of those red flags. >> others say there were signs. just this week neighbors say hasan gave away his furniture and many of his possession a devout muslims, there are reports he was frustrated being ridiculed about his religion by soldiers and his first deployment to afghanistan. all pieces of a violent and deadly puzzle they are struggling to connect. another major piece to that puzzle is the evidence already collected by investigators, including documents that he was carrying at the time of the alleged attacks and hasan's home computer pulled from his apartment overnight. jay gray, nbc news, ft. hood, texas. tonight we are learning more about the woman praised for stopping the rampage before it went even further. her name is sergeant kimberly munley, a civilian police officer with the army and a s.w.a.t. team member. she arrived at the scene seven minutes after the first report of gun fire. her boss says the suspected shooter charged at her with a gun in each hand. in exchange of gun fire she was shot in the wrist and thighs. munley is from pennsylvania, an army veteran and married to a soldier stationed at ft. bragg. nidal malik hasan was born in arlington, went to virginia tech. received his medical degree from the military's uniform services university of the health sciences in bethesda. before reporting for duty at ft. hood in july he worked at the walter reed army medical center pursuing his career in psychiatry. now people in the d.c. area are reacting to news from the shooting yesterday. pat collins has that report. >> reporter: where he stayed. army major nidal hasan, the alleged mass murderer of fellow soldiers at ft. hood. for years he lived at the white oak towers apartment in silver spring. reverend malcolm frasier is the united methodist chaplain at howard university, a neighbor of hasan. they liv on the same floor. >> we live in a 22-story building. what scares me is what if whatever triggered him to react the way he did happened while he was in that building with so many young kids and babies and things like that. that scares me. >> reporter: where he went to school, the uniform services university of health services in bethesda. today i spoke by phone to a classmate of hasan's. he says hasan was against the war on terror. >> he equated the war on terror with the war on islam. he became visibly upset when people would challenge him on those views. >> reporter: where he prayed. the muslim community center on new hampshire avenue in silver spring. hasan was a regular worshipper here. sometimes he would come to pray in the dark hours of the morning. >> those totally dedicated muslims who can get up early in the morning from the bed and come to prayer. not many people come, about 25 to 30 people come every day. he used to come every morning. that's all i know. >> reporter: at the muslim community center today we talked to a number of people about hasan. including the ihman. >> i've never seen him argue with anybody or saying something bad that i pay say is strange. >> reporter: then for him to be linked to this kind of violence? >> i shocked. to me it was unbelievable. >> reporter: there was a recurring refrain today at this muslim community center. remember, remember this is the act of one man, one man on his own. >> the fact that a muslim committed this crime will reenforce the false image that is muslims are bad and muslims are going to hurt us, hurt america. that's false. we have a lot of muslims who work in the government, helping the united states, dying for the united states. >> repter: clearly there is more to be learned about this case. more to be known about major hasan. i'm pat collins, news4, montgomery county. some members of hasan's family still live in northern virginia. julie carey is in fairfax county with more on that part of the story. >> reporter: major nadal hasan has a brother and cousin in northern virginia. some came to gather on the home in the baileys crossroads area. the family will not come out to the cameras to make a statement. what they have written makes their thoughts very clear. they call major hasan's actions deplorable and despicable. inside this home, a family in seclusion. they are horrified by the rampage. a statement issued late yesterday by hasan's cousin reads, "we are shocked and saddened by the terrible events at ft. hood. we are filled with grief for the families of today's victim. our family loves america." their dismay is shared by fellow muslims at the nearby mosque. the doctor spoke at the family's tragedy in friday's prayers. >> we watched the news with tearful eyes and concern over the lives of many of our fellow citizens and those affected, but also to recognize it was done, perpetrated by somebody who potentially has been in our midst and lived in our community is troubly tragic. >> reporter: he worries local muslims could be unfairly judged because of hasan's terrible crime. >> it wasn't his faith that drove him to do this. it wasn't his national origin or his parents' origin. rather it was what it is, a horrific crime committed by a criminal who needs to be brought to justice. >> reporter: he says the hasans are known as successful members of the community involved in law, banking and real estate. he hopes the offer crime of their relative doesn't mar their good name. >> knowing them, knowing them as people who have always had a good name and people who have always done the best they could for his aunt, specifically, somebody known for her charitable work, yet afflicted by such tragedy from a family member who was close to them is very tragic. >> reporter: major hasan's cousin issued an updated statement that reads in part, "everyone is asking why this happened. the answer is we simply do not know. we cannot explain nor do we excuse or understand what happened yesterday. yesterday's violence in no way reflects theeels or beliefs or principles of our family." they say the hasan family in northern virginia answered all the questions the fbi posed to them and plan to continue to cooperate to help eventually answer that question why. >> thanks, julie. we'll have continuing coverage of the story throughout our broadcast. in the next half hour, we'll report on security at military installations across the d.c. area. one person is dead and another five wounded after an office building shooting apparently carried out in an act of retaliation today. it happened late this morning in downtown orlando, florida. police say 40-year-old jason rodriguez is the one who opened fire. he's a former employee of an engineering firm in the building. rodriguez fled after the attack. that prompted an hour's long search and put nearby schools on lockdown. other workers in the building described the terrifying moments before they were evacuated. >> we got an e-mail from our receptionist telling us there's been a shooting in the building and lock down all the doors. we watch the all the s.w.a.t. teams and everybody come in. >> we tried to figure out a plan if someone came in, what do we do? this was a perfect hiding place. you're stuck in cubicles. it was scary. >> police eventually caught rodriguez who was fired in 2007 for not pforming to the engineer firm's standards. after his arrest he told a reporter he did it because the company, in his words, "left him out to rot." coming up in the broadcast tonight, the taliban says it's holding the bodies of two missing u.s. soldiers. >> a delay in plans for a house vote on sweeping health care legislation. >> swine flu forcing businesses to make changes. >> a piece of a plane came crashing down on somebody's lawn in new york. >> we had a lot of sunshine and it's going to be a cold night. as a matter of fact, a freeze warning tonight. time in 26 years, the unemployment rate in this country is more than 10%. new numbers released today show 16 million people out of work. the unemployment rate rose to 10.2% in october. it was the first time since 1983 the unemployment rate has been more than 10%. the economy lost jobs the 22nd month in a row. leeanne gregg has our report >> reporter: another extension of jobless benefits, the fourth since the recession began. today president obama signed a bill that adds 14 to 20 extra weeks of unemployment aid. it also extends tax credits for home buyers through next april and provides tax breaks to businesses that have recent losses. >> economists tell us when these benefits are spent on food or clotng or rent, it actually strengthens our economy and creates new jobs. >> reporter: this new law as the labor department announced, the unemployment rate has grown to 10.2%, nearly 16 million people can't find jobs, even though the worse recession since the great did he preegs ended. the president said higher employment is his administration's overriding focus. >> so although it will take time and take patience, i am confident that our economy will recover and i'm confident we are moving in the right direction. >> reporter: james robinson would benefit from the new law. he is unemployed and looking, but his benefits have run out. >> keep your head up and keep looking. that's what i'm doing. >> reporter: the job losses cut a wide swath across the economy from manufacturing and construction to retail and financial. this report is the first since the government said last week the economy grew at a 3.5% annual rate in the july/september quarter. the strongest signal yet the economy is rebounding. most analysts agree jobs will remain scarce even as the economy improves. leeanne gregg, nbc news. the unemployment number does not affect the stock market. the dow finished up 18 points at 10,023. nasdaq gained seven ploints and closed 2,112. major stock indicators were up 3% for the week. the health care reform bill appears to be running into trouble in the house. the huge price tag are causing democrats to think twice about supporting it. brian moar has the latest. >> reporter: early in the day on capitol hill, democrats sounded confident of a critical victory. >> we hope to pass this health care bill on saturday. >> reporter: a short time later, it appeared the health care bill might not be ready for a vote this weekend, as democrat leaders struggled to shore up support. the huge price tag is not sitting well with fiscally conservative blue dog democrats. >> we don't need to be making any new promises when the nation is almost $12 trillion in debt. >> reporter: socially conservative democrats are concerned out coverage of illegal immigrants and abortions. the president is still hoping to have a bill ready to sign by year's end. because of the ft. hood shootings, he delayed his arm-twisting trip to capitol hill. instead he is set to mt with law makers bill headed toward a critical vote when the democrats are ready. the president has made health care reform the corner stone of his young administration, but now it looks like he is going to have to fight members of his own party to get it. brian moar, nbc news, washington. two u.s. soldiers are missing in afghanistan. the taliban claims to have their body. wednesday during a supply mission, two supply boxes landed in a river and when the soldiers tried to grab them, they were swept away. the soldiers are paratroopers from the 82nd airborne division. 25 nato and afghan national security forces were wounded by the insurgence. afation officials are investigating after a piece of a delta plane crashed down on to somebody's lawn in long island, new york. yesterday a 20-pound tail cone popped off. the federal aviation administrationaid since the plane didn't need the part, the plane landed safely in tokyo. a chicago couple thinks a big chunk of ice that crashed into their home the other night may have fallen off a plane. the couple lives along a path some flights take while approaching o'hare airport. skies were clear that night so it wasn't the weather. aviation officials say if it didn't come from a plane on approach from o'hare, it could have been from a jet in high altitude and would make it impossible to trace the ice back 2 any specific plane or airline. coming up believed to have killed at least 13 people yesterday. authorities revised the estimate of other casualties upward from 30 people injured to 43. it ended when hasan was shot four times. nbc news has learned he's been transferred to the brook army medical center in san antonio. and he is listed in stable condition. hasan has family in northern virginia. they released a new statement tonight saying in their words, "we are mortified." there is no justification whatsoever for what happened. some people say there were incidents in hasan's past that should have received the attention of military officials. tracie potts has more on that part of the story. >> reporter: hours before the shooting, major nidal hasan picked up breakfast at a convenience store as seen on a security camera. a neighbor says he started emptying his apartment two days ago and offered her $60 to clean it out this morning. hasan's supervisor at ft. hood saw no red flags. >> sometimes people have things going on we don't know about or they don't show us to, and people make very bad choices. in certainly was one of them. >> reporter: should the army have known their psychiatrist was capable of this? there are reports hasan complained about being deployed to fight fellow muslims and the fbi was aware of him six months ago, trying to verify if he wrote this blog comparing suicide bombers to heroic soldiers. >> all this should have come from the military attention. >> reporter: he reportedly wanted out of the army and offered to pay the government back for medical school. >> why didn't we pick up on this guy? why were we investing in his education if he was given off signals he wasn't prepared to defend the constitution of the united states. >> reporter: relatives report he was being harassed because he was a muslim. >> i don'think there is any faith that teaches its members to deal with what may have been harassment by pulling out a gun shooting people. >> reporter: in a statement, hasan's family emphasizes he was born and raised an american. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. if order to honor the victims of the shootings at ft. hood, president obama ordered all flags on federal buildings to be flown at half-staff. flag over the white house was one of the first to take to lf-staff position today. the president addressed the ft. hood tragedy today saying the entire nation is grieving. >> we don't know all the answers yet. i would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts. what we do know is there are families, friends and an entire nation grieving for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday in one of the worst mass shootin ever to take place on an american military base. >> the president says the white house flag will remain at half-staff through veterans day on wednesday. the pentagon held a moment of silence this afternoon for the victims of the shooting. dozens of staff stood with bowed heads in the pentagon court yard. the moment of silence happened 2:34 this afternoon, exactly 24 hours after the shooting rampage. defense secretary robert gates ordered a moment of silence for the pentagon and u.s. military forces throughout the world. >> in the d.c. area, security was on special alert at all the military installations. the ft. hood shootings shocked the close-knit military family. tom sherwood has more. >> reporter: at walter reed in northwest washington, security was on alert as the terrible shootings at ft. hood rang throughout the community. >> there are others affected by this tragedy. >> the fact it's one of their own, somebody in uniform in a place that should be a sanctuary. >> reporter: jamie mcintyre, former cnn expert military correspondent and former reporter for wtop radio says the military family is accustomed to living with war-like worries, but not here at home. >> well, it's really disturbing because these are soldiers who have been facing life and death situations in iraq and then they come home and they're in the bosom of their family and they're not even safe here. one of their own, in their own uniform, in a place that should be a safe haven turns out to be, you know, go on a murderous rampage. >> reporter: military installations like forte myer are a common sight. the andrews air force base in maryland and many others large and small facilities. >> this is a big military town. the military headquarters is here. all of the big -- the pentagon itself has 24,000 people. there are bases in the area. it's an important military town. something like this sends shock waves through the whole military. >> reporter: the loss of life at ft. hood was on the mind of tourists it very continuing the military memorials. >> a shocker, for sure. you would think it plea in help in solving the case. 54-year-old ashoka mody was shot in his home last month in bethesda. the suspect was last seen running from mody's driveway. today police released a photo of a ski mask thought to belong to the attacker. while mody remains in the hospital, his wife is begging anybody who may know anything to come forward. >> my husband is a hard-working family man. no one can understand why anything like this could possibly have happened to him. >> investigators do not believe mody's work with the imf was a factor in the attack. there is a $36,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest. the search for a missing virginia tech student is gting more help. 20-year-old morgan harrington disappeared last month during a metallica concert. hundreds of volunteers will comb the area through the weekend. the parents are offering a $100,000 reward for the safe return of their daughter or information that leads to the conviction of those responsible for her disappearance. metallica, the band, is adding an addition dwral $50,000 reward in the case. over all the commute in montgomery county today w much easier than it was earlier this week. the county says it has now fixed that computer system that coordinates traffic signals. the system crashed early wednesday morning, causing gridlock on the roads until late last night. county executive ike leggett promises to fix the system. virginia commuters can expect free rides all next week on the brand-new tysons express bus. the new omni ride route goes from woodbridge to tysons corner. it's one of several new options transportation officials want commuters to use at dulles rail construction ties up route 7. round trips will cost $6 cash or $4.80 with a smart trip card. >> coming up, many evening, bob ryan. a chilly night out there meanwhile down in the central america, this is what is left of ida, now just a depression. as it moves through honduras into the western caribbean once again, probably will get stronger. here is the latest track as it moves tomorrow. may restrengthen to a tropical storm. after that, a lot of uncertainty. it is very, very late in the season and the gulf is cooling down, so it's not going to be any big threat. it may produce some rains before next week is over in parts of florida. for us, overnight tonight, we will be seeing a cold night where temperatures right now are into the 40s. freeze warning around us. we are going to continue to see chilly weather. last few years our first freeze has been in the middle part of november. over the "tourist angels.
