this right. i shot 65 and tiger shot 69. he gets a check for $10 million and i get a check for -- no, i'm just kidding. i really enjoyed playing in the four fedex cup events. i thought they were really well run. i didn't play well in the first three to give myself a good chance. that's what's cool about the playoffs. you've got to play well throughout the playoffs. for me, even though i didn't win the fedex cup, i won the last event of the year. i feel great about my game. i want to thank butch harmon and dave stockton, dave pells, guys that helped me get through it. butch has helped me strike the ball better than ever, but i wasn't getting anything out of it. last week spending time with dave stockton helped me on these greens. i've putted these greens phenomenal this past week. i feel so grateful. >> will this motivate you more to win the fedex cup next year? >> it's a year away. i enjoy this event. i enjoy the fedex cup. i'm looking forward to the presidents cup, the off-season. spend a few months with some down time and get ready for next year and make 2010 a special year. this was a -- this wasn't a banner year. this certainly makes it a much better year than it was. i'm looking forward to the off-season, but more than that, i'm looking forward to 2010 because i think i have direction in my ball striking as well as my putting. >> congratulations on a great win. >> thanks, mark. >> dan? >> jimmy? >> mark, thanks very much. a little flash of humor there from mickelson as we take a look at the final fedex cup bonus distribution standings. tiger woods with the $10 million paycheck. phil mickelson with a performance today comes in second. let's go down to dan hicks. >> thank you very much, jimmy. for the second time, the commissioner of the tour mr. jim finchum will give the fedex cup to tiger woods after sitting out last year with a knee surgery. i'm turn it over for the presentation. >> thank you, dan. tiger, you did everything that the cup design of the program is supposed to make you do. you played really consistent in the regular season. you won five times. you played great in the playoffs with that -- including that incredible win at chicago. and then you did what you had to do this week here at the tour championship. congratulations on your second cup. >> thanks, tim. >> tiger, what does this mean? it represents a body of work during the course of a long, long season. lots of rounds, lots of golf normally at a time when you don't play this much golf. how does it feel to lift this cup for the second time? >> the who idea is to be consistent. you know, the entire season and try and position yourself the best you possibly can for the playoffs. this year i've played well. you know, i was very consistent. when i didn't win, i was in the top ten. so i kept accumulating points. and then, you know, i'm in the playoffs. i played pretty good actually. you know, i was very consistent. as i said. but only thing is i wish i would have gotten a few more ws this year. >> put the cup up here for a second. we've got johnny miller who's moved into the scene here. tiger, you can just stand right here. you don't need to bother to take a seat. johnny, fire away at tiger. >> a couple of months coming back from that right acl right on the left leg and worked hard to reh that and won 6 out of the last 17 events, which is not too bad. surely you would have liked to have won one of the four majors. but you've got to be pretty proud of this year. >> absolutely. the whole year was an unknown going into the year. i didn't know anything. i didn't know how the knee would respond. a lot of unknowns early in the season, and to have played as well as i have and as consistently as i have the entire year is something i'm very proud of. wish i could have got a major in there. but, you know, i was consistent this year, and hopefully next year i can put together at the right times. >> i noticed this year i thought you're almost like a virtuoso, hitting a lot of lower fades, hooks, working the ball all over the place. you have really worked on a lot of trajectories, haven't you? >> yes, my game feels much more comfortable. i'm able to shift the ball both ways and shift my trajectory. that's something hank and i have been working on. now i have a leg to do it on. i couldn't do it before because my leg was limiting what i can do. now i feel so much more stable on my left side. >> i know you got one guy that's real confident right now. you know, phil, 20 birdies this week, number one in putting. all of a sudden h's got a lot more distance and a lot of confidence. that's going to be a good year next year, i think. >> yeah, you know, phil played well, and you know, he did the things he needed to do this week. unfortunately, i didn't putt well. and consequently, i didn't really push him. today was a perfect example of that. i had plenty of looks early, and i didn't make those. phil ran off and got away from us a little bit. >> it's not too often you have phil and tiger winning in the same day. >> it's certainly different. >> tiger, you got presidents cup coming up in a couple of weeks. it's the last really bi huge event, international competition. sb besides that, though, give people a sense of what you do in the off-season. do you actually take a look, close look, you and hank haney get together and assess what you liked you did, assess maybe what you think you can improve on. i know you're one of the guys who likes to look at it closely and improve in every phase of the game. what's one of the things in your mind to get ready for or look forward to in 2010? >> i never really thought about the streak. when you watch this team on video, their capable of any other team in the national football league and we are, as well. i think that the disappointing thing was a loss, not to a team that had that record. >> here's what i would say to that and what most redskins fans say to that. that's not just another loss. this has bigger ramificationtion than jim zorn may think because losing to the detroit lions inexcusable. bottom line. >> we'll talk more about it in a few ments. >> meanwhile a lost team in football as you might imagine, not sitting too well with the redskins fans. we call up to these folks at espn in northwest d.c. and they told us what the problem is. >> zorn is questionable on his play calls. he should have taken the field goal instead of fourth down. the lack of confidence from the team. >> another example of, in my opinion how the colts is -- the coach is in over his head. the only time the skins have moved to ball to get out of a no-huddle situation like they did last week. >> jim zorn seems to be the focus of a lot of us from separation. more on the coach, specifically, coming up a little bit later in sports. we're following a developing story in prince george's county tonight. a gas leak forced about a dozen businesses to evacuate. this is the same strip mall where gas leak caused a massive explosion a few months ago. darcy spencer is live with t latest. >> good evening. krig. >> reporter: this is the same strip mall but a different section. the gas leak emanated from this marshall store behind me and fire officials are telling me, we were minutes away from another catastrophic explosion. the penn mar shopping center in forestville evacuated for the second time in four months because of a gas leak. >> a representative from washington gas alerted us to readings on his meeter the and we subsequently evacuated about ten stores in the strip here. we're now in the process of digging up the gas line in the rear to crimp it off and hopefully, we'll be able to isolate the gas leak there. >> the fire officials got the call around 1:00 in the afternoon. the leak originated from the marshall's department store and the america's best contacts and eyeglasses store next door. >> they smelled the gas next door and the fire department came and asked us to evacuate. so we just did that. >> back in may, a gas leak caused a massive explosion that flattened another section of this same shopping center, injuring nine firefighters. >> it sound like the same exact set of circumstances as the occurring now as it did back in may, why is this occurring again? we have to look at this and make sure it's fixed and doesn't happen again. >> washington gas and pepco shot off the utilities to roughly a dozen businesses and the gas company is in the process of closing off the gas line. fire officials say the gas readings inside the build things were extremely high and there could have been a repeat of the may explosion. how close were we okay having another catastrophe? >> probably very close. >> it is a little bit concerning. i don't know what to say. they should have checked everything when that happened down there. i mean, at this point we'll have to wait and see what happens next. >> we have an update just about within the last ten minutes. mark brady from the fire department said they've been able to isolate the gas line and shut it off so gas is no longer coming into the buildings. as you can see the businesses are clouds. i'm told -- closed and they will remain closed for a number of days while this investigation continues. darcy spencer, news4. >> thanks. still ahead on this broadcast tonight, famous fugitive caught! roman polanski skipped out on bail and fled the country 30 years ago. today he was arrested. and we'll tell you when conan o'brien will be back at work. he hit his head and was taken to the hospital on friday. plus, theottest ticket in town. where you can get your hand on a ticket. chuck, the forecast?
