george's county, aaron gilchrist. he bragged to prosecutors about how he killed a teenage girl from manassas. now more than a decade after that murder, it is execution day for paul powell. the 31-year-old has kwloens to die in the electric chair tonight in jarret, virginia. it was 1999 when he stabbed 16-year-old stacy reid in the heart. he also raped and stabbed her younger sister. powell got the death penalty but virginia sreme court overturned the verdict. powell responded by taunting the prosecutors in a letter and by revealing new details about the crime. he was convicted again in 2003 and sentenced to death again. his execution is set for 9:00 tonight. julie carrie will have more on the story coming up later in the newscast. gas leak closed parts of the north and southbound prosecutors. news4's julie carrie spoke with the mother of the victims and prosecutor who won this trial. >> reporter: the victim's closest relatives, her mother and sister, since moved away from virginia but today they are back. at this hour en route from manassaso the greenville correctional center in jarret, virginia. christie reid was just 14 when she survived powell's attack. the night both women are prepared to watch the death of the man who killed their loved one. earlier today, christy reid who survived poll's vicious attack and her mother, lorraine, gathered the family at a friend's home and read e-mails from support others. the women admit they are nervous about watching an execution. but the messages help. >> i get messages daily from people i don't even know. i can't express how much -- >> reporter:r:hristy's neck still bear the scars from the brutally attack. the then 14-year-old returned home to find her sister stacy dead. powell then dragged christie to the they prepare to play in round one of the ncaa tournament. we begin this half hour with our top story. prince william county police released video of a brazened armed robbery hoping lit help them catch the thief. they emptied the safe at wendy's in woodbridge, virginia. chris gordon with this story. >> reporter: it happened here at this wendy's restaurant on old bridge road in woodbridge. december 15th at 8:50 in the evening the surveillance camera shows two suspects dressed in dark blue hoodies wearing ski masks, ordering customers not to look at them. as one armed with a gun hit the manager in the head. knocking him to the ground causing a three-inch laceration. ordering him to open the store safe. the susct takes more than $600 in cash and then along with his accomplice makes his escape. employees at the wendy's cck on the manager who was bleeding and called 911 to report the robbery. police arrived and interviewed customers that witnessed the robbery. paramedics come to treat the manager's wounds. this video is the best evidence police have. it was shown to us by prince william county police officer eric hernandez. >> this video gives us a lot of information. violent. did hurt the manager. they are armed. they are definitely bold. customers coming and going. they are not afraid to do what they are doing. >> reporter: people who live in the area are reacting to the news chesapeake. he told police that the monkey attacked him after he accidentally stepped on the monkey's tail. after the animal bit him, police say that the victim managed to get the monkey back into his cage and went to a neighbor's house for help. the neighbors say his hand had been bitten and one finger was nearly cut off. the man owned the monkey for several years and has a permit for it. drivers along a busy stretch of route 1 in prince william county won't deal with flooding anymore. they broke ground on a new bridge. it is an area prone to flooding during heavy rain. the new bridge is 17 feet higher than the other and act dates six lanes of traffic instead of four. $18 million project. completed six months ahead of schedule. also sound groundbreaking on a new housing development in that his sugar levels are where they need to be and his teammates have said that watching him battle through this illness and come back to play in hi old form really has been inspiring. austin freeman was able to return to his team after his diagnosis and against cincinnati. that's when he scored a game high 24 points. freeman averaged 15 points, two points since he was diagnosed and a very big piece of the hoyas' success before falling to west virginia and the big east tournament. so in one of two georgetown players that have been to the ncaa tournament and he's so excited to be able to experience this opportunity to help georgetown make this a special run. coach john thompson iii keeps a close eye on austin on the court. he says that he knows he is feeling better but this has not been easy for anyone close to austin freeman. >> difficult. for house family to accept to say the words i'm a diabetic. that has not beenies why you for him to do. he's here. >> i'm not worried about what i have. when i get on the court, i'm still playing basketball. playing what i love. i'm not worried about it on the court. i take care of what i have. manage certain things. >> i know you are a humble guy. what does it mean to you the support have you gotten from the coaches and teammates? they have been impressed watching you. >> it is big. all the support i get from my teammates. knowing that they care. keeps me going. >> i was more concerned with his health. i wasn't concerned when he could come back the court. as long as he is healthy, you know, safe for him to come back on the court, gladly welcome him. if hay would be all right, that's the biggest thing. now he's playing, he is going to be fine. >> that's chris wright talking about his teammate. georgetown is the only team in the big east that has three players in the top 20 in scoring, austin freeman leads scoring for georgetown averaging 16 opinion 7 points. this is a really big deal for him today to be able to be here with his teammates and family to take part in this and really just wants to be able to lead the hoyas to what he says he thinks could be a championship. >> it is going to be interesting to see terps. on the court in spokane. getting ready for their first round matchup in houston tomorrow. there have been upts in first roun but gary williams usually has his guys ready. last time the terps lost the first round game 13 years ago. since then they have railed off nine straight opening round wins. gary has relied heavily on the starters all season long and that's only going to be amplified in the tournament. the youngest of the bunch is big ben, jordan williams. he'srown by leaps and bounds this season. williams pleasant surprise, especially the last month or so. most important starter is acc player of the year vasquez. as for what gary will say to his guys, that's easy. >> by the way we played during the year, i think that's really key that there is a tendency as we said earlier to get two jacked up, we tried to do -- do things we don't usually do and have to stay away from that and playithiwhat you do. and play really hard. while do you that. there's very few teams that don't
