massive heart pain. and she was dizzy because of the high blood pressure. >> the pregnant woman sitting in coach was moved up to first class so doctors could use an emergency medical kit to deep her talked to who practices in france. >> wow. what a story. >> tonight, authorities in frederick, maryland, are raising questions about the mental competency of a man accused trying to steal a single engine air plen this morning. when they asked him why he did it, he just said he wanted to leave frederick. he tax sid across the runway before crashing on to the grass. >> the airplane is owned by the mid-atlantic soaring association a glider cup adjacent to the frederick airport. it's unclearly exactly how it was stolen from a lock enclosed hanger. the single engine piper is used to tow gliders president at about 2:15 a.m., it was reportedly seen on the runway. the pilot apparently lost control and crashed on the grass, nose down, propeller broken, fuselage damage. a witness reported seeing a man run towards the trees beside the river. a maryland state police helicopter searched by sky. frederick police officers following tracks in the snow. officers found and arrested 51-year-old calvin craig cox who is said to be a homeless man. they took him into custody. >> the manager of the fed rick airport authority described to me the events that led to mr. cox allegedly crashing this plane, upending it on its nose after crossing a runway. >> this is the glider hanger. the aircraft was taken here in this hanger right here. the propeller went into the ground, kind of flipped, if you become air born. today, an al qaeda group based in yemen claimed responsibility for that attempted bombing in detroit on christmas day. president barack obama spoke publicly about the incident this afternoon. >> it's a reminder of the danger we face and the nature of those who threaten our homeland. the american people should be ensured that we are doing everything in our power to keep you and your family safe and secure. it's absolutely critical that we learn from this incident and take the necessary measures to prevent future acts of terrorism. >> here's what we know about that incident. federal investigators say um umar abdul mutallab tried to ignite an explosive device as the plane landed. his name was on a list of people with possible terrorist ties because his father had warned authorities that his son had adopted radical views. however, federal officials say they did not have enough information to keep him from flying into the u.s. president obama has ordered a review of that watch list policy. he's also ordered a second review of air travel security procedures. airline industry officials say that some of those restrictions now have been eased after that two-day crackdown. the measures were put in place after this foiled christmas day terror attack. airlines will now be allowed to turn -- airline passengers will now be allowed to turn on the inflight entertainment systems. pilots will be allowed to decide if passengers can stand up for the last hour of international flights that head to the united states. and the transportation security administration will also let pilots decide whether to allow passengers to keep their blankets or other carry-ones in their laps during that time. the tsa has not officially confirmed that some security measures have been eased. and police are looking for the driver who hit an tail kilned a woman overnight and then ran off. d.c. police said the unidentified victim was hit by this car. the driver ran away from the scene after hitting the woman which happened along 16th street at about 1:0 this morning. and two women are in critical condition this evening after a car struck them both in rockville. police say a man driving home from work hit the woman. it appeared -- it happened around 9:00 this morning in the 1800 block of chapman avenue. one of the women is in her 60s, the other in her 20s. police are still investigating what caused this crash. >> thousands of prince george's county residents are being advised to boil the water. the precautionary advisory was issued on saturday after a 40-year-old water main broke in fort washington. according to wssc, there is an increased risk of contamination because of this break. show erring in the water is just fine. drivers may start seeing delays along the new york avenue bridge. this week, the department of transportation is looking to improve the road. crews will start by demolishing the center mian on new york avenue. all three lanes will be open during rush hour, but only two lanes will be getting by during offpeak hours. extensive construction will start come spring. >> last night was not a fun night for redskins retailer, and it looks like that downhill slide is coming to a end with the decaaddecade. retailers may have something to celebrate this holiday season. let's check in with julia bournstein. shoppers went back. what did they decide to do? did they actually have money? or did they decide they would just go into jet? >> shoppers spent a little bit more in career. we're seeing stabilization and slight increases. 6.6% increases in retail sales between december 1 and christmas eve. that does show a sign of increase. there's some areas that did much better than others. this year, luxury retail was up 1%. electronics up about 6%. jewelry on the high end and low end of 5.6%. some eareas of strength and progress after those numbers last year. >> we're always reading the tea leaves of retail sales. is this a sign of optism among the consumer that we've been looking for? >> it is a sign of optimism. one is consume erts dependent know what was going on with their jobs or economy. this year we're seeing stabilizati stabilization. last year, there was way too much inventory, especially as consumers pulled back. this year they kept the inventories down. >> at tyson's corner, they were lined up on the beltway to get into the shopping center after christmas. >> well a lot of retailers really want to maintain that momentum. those shoppers momentum. best buy and walmart, for instance, started promoting their deals for this week a couple of days before christmas. they really want to maintain that momentum. another thing they're looking for is gift cards. retailers can't count the revenue from gift cards until people come in to redeem those gift cards. so everyone is keeping their fingers cross that consume lers rush in this week and spend all of those gift cards. because the am of money spent on gift cards did go up, both for store-specific gift cards and for those wide-ranging gift cards. like visa gift cards which can be used in multiple stores. >> all right, the news an update. actor charlie sheen spent part of thf christmas in jail. his wife called 911 and accused him of threatening her with a knife. part of the 911 call was made public today. prosecutors say they probably won't make a decision about charges against sheen until february. new york police have questioned the girlfriend of jon gosselin about a particularry at his apartment. over the weekend, his apartment was broken into and vandalized. his attorney said a note was left behind that was signed by gosselin's ex, hailey glassman. her attorney says that note is fake. >> torrential rains causing major flooding in southeastern australia. officials say people in rural areas have been stuck in their homes after roads became impassable. most of the farmers had stocked up for months. the
