were still able to make it up into the 70s with the warm northwesterly wind coming in right now about 12 miles per hour. take a look at the numbers around the region and look at the numbers to the south. fredericksburg, charlottesville, both coming in at 80 degrees. 73 in culpepper. 76 in la plata. up toward gaithersburg right now current temperature along 270, 72 degrees. up toward frederick, maryland, coming in right now at 70 degrees. so a very warm afternoon but it's not going to stay that way. we have our frontal boundary that's right on top of us right now. to the south of that front we're seeing some thundershowers around roanoke, richmond, and norfolk, all seeing some thunderstorms right now and some of those on the strong side. for us, we're not going to see any shower activity. what we are going to see though is the cooler air moving in from the north. it will be mild to start the evening down to about 63 degrees by 9:00. 58 by 11:00 but waking up the temperatures in the mid 40s. many of you will wake up to temperatures in the 30s. i'll let you know how long this cooler weather is going to stick around. it's going to be here for a little while. >> thank you, doug. victims of yesterday's violent storms that ripped through the dallas/ft. worth region are now surveying damage. >> as many as a dozen tornadoes left behind a trail of destruction. jay gray has more on the stories of survival. >> reporter: survivors are working through what is left of their homes and the shock of what has happened. >> i don't know if it has sunk in. >> reporter: miles of debris stretch out across dozens of neighborhoods in the dallas/ft. worth area. hundreds of homes and lives torn apart. but through the tears and all of the rubble there are amazing stories of survival. this is all that's left of chris wilson's home as he looks at the stairs that once led to a second floor. he can't help but think about what could have been. >> my wife could have been in the bedroom. you see it's gone. my son could have been upstairs in his room. that room is gone. >> reporter: but they are not. somehow no one was killed during the violent storms. >> everything worked in the city. the sirens worked. the early warnings worked. that's why i think everybody is alive today. >> reporter: including in at least two cases a couple best friends reunited with their owners. >> so glad to see you. i'm so worried about him. >> reporter: concern stretches across the region right now, frustrated residents still unable to return to their battered neighborhoods. >> we can't check out our house. why? >> reporter: officials say even though the skies are clear there is still a real danger in some of the hardest hit areas. >> we have to make sure safety is the first order. you have no power, limited utilities. there's not a lot that you can do at this point in time. >> reporter: even though there is so much to do to try and get things back to the way they were before the storms. all of this damage and debris is evidence that's going to take an awfully long time. in texas, jay gray, news 4. health care is a big issue in the upcoming election. even with insurance, seeing the doctor can be very expensive. today a group of medical experts unveiled a campaign to keep americans from spending too much on treatment that they may not need. brian mohr reports on a push to educate both doctors and patients. >> reporter: every year millions of americans pay the price for unnecessary medical treatment and a panel of national medical experts is trying to spread the word that safe is not always better than sorry. >> it turns out that's not true, that many of these tests and treatments have side effects, risks to patients, and are not necessary. >> reporter: nine organizations representing some 375,000 specialists are pinpointing over used tests and procedures such as ekgs and stress tests and imaging for headaches. >> they also can expose you to things that make the doctor think they need to have another test and another intervention, yet another intervention. >> it's a shocking amount. estimates are that as much as 30% of the health care performed doesn't contribute to people's actual health. >> reporter: some worry this is an effort to cut back on care. >> it becomes a concern, however, when those outside of the doctor/patient relationship, for example the government, start to use that information in ways that instead limits patient choice. >> reporter: but "consumer reports", which is part of the effort, says this is about empowering patients. >> they need to know both sides. we think when they know all of the information they'll be able to be just as involved in these decisions as the physicians. >> reporter: and an effort to treat patients and the health care system while doing no harm. each of the nine specialty groups has come up with a list of five key questions for patients and doctors. brian mohr, nbc news, washington. >> some examples are unnecessary ct scans. studies show brain scans do help the outcome of most patients who faint unless there is evidence of a seizure or other neurologic symptoms. now to the megamillions. earlier this week we told you of a baltimore woman's claims she has one of the three winning tickets in last week's record $640 million jackpot. >> well, today merlan wilson called for a press conference but when news 4 arrived she refused to talk. wilson is a mcdonald's employee. she and some co-workers went in on a lottery pool but she says she also bought separate tickets for herself. wilson claims it is one of the extra tickets that actually won. her co-workers meanwhile are crying foul. today she briefly defended herself but declined to answer any specific questions. >> you're wishing this would be over. >> i wish it would be over. >> do you have the ticket on you right now? where is the ticket? do have you anything to say to the other people that work with you? if it's their ticket? coming up tonight on news 4 at 5:00 we'll hear from wilson's attorney about why he is telling they should leave her alone. now for the latest in the presidential race tonight. it is almost as if the general election campaign is under way. republicans have not yet named their nominee but president obama and mitt romney are trading bars. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: the day after his triple primary win that signals to many the end of the primary seas season, mitt romney went after his likely next opponent. >> this is not the time for president obama's hide-and-seek campaign. >> reporter: it was a personal attack. romney charged a deceptive president was unmasked when he told russia's medvedev he'd have more flexibility if re-elected. >> he doesn't want to share his real plans before the election. either with the public or with the press. by flexibility, he means that what the american public doesn't know won't hurt him. >> reporter: it sounded like pay back. president obama had mocked romney yesterday for backing the house gop budget. >> and he even called it marvelous. that's a word you don't often hear generally. >> reporter: that's a personal attack. >> he's painting romney i think as an efite northeasterner even though he was born in michigan who is out of touch with the rough-and-tumble of daily life. >> reporter: rick santorum's daily life for three more weeks will be in pennsylvania. his last shot is to dominate his home state primary, april 24th. >> we have to win here and we plan on winning here. >> reporter: as he tries, santorum seems short of being mostly ignored by mitt romney who is in general election mode, taking fire from barack obama and firing back. why get personal? if the november election is close, likability and trust could determine who wins. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. in maryland a hotly contested house race is now set for this fall. businessman john delaney won the democratic primary for district 6. he'll face long-time congressman roscoe bartlett. the republican is fighting to keep his seat for an 11th term in the house, redistricting changed district 6 and could favor a large portion of montgomery county, which traditionally votes democratic. in d.c. the democratic at large council race is too close to call right now. incumbent vincent orange leads the challenger by just 523 votes. about 3800 absentee ballots still need to be counted. those results may not be in until next friday, april 13th. a school that provides medical and health care training closed all its campuses in northern virginia without any warning. a.c.t. college operated for 30 years. as julie carey reports, students and teachers are shocked and demanding answers. >> reporter: crushing news hit aaron as he arrived for class this morning at a.c.t. college. he enrolled three weeks ago with hopes of becoming a dental assistant but this letter from the college president informed him the health sciences college had abruptly closed. >> i have no idea what is going on. i just showed up today and see you guys here and was told that school is being closed and so now i'm going to try and find out, what do i have to do with the loans, the grants that i just got? you know, where am i going to go to school now? this wasn't my future. >> reporter: a for profit institution a.c.t. college has ybanez round for about three decades and has three locations in manassas, fairfax county, and roslyn. they train students to become medical and dental assistants and radiologists. now more than 500 students and faculty are in sudden limbo. teachers haven't been paid in weeks. the letter from a.c.t. college president jeff moore blames the u.s. department of education for withholding funds after an audit revealed problems at the school. the student council president doesn't buy the explanation. >> well, the current explanation we have is just a letter that's been drafted by the president of the college, a man who obviously doesn't care enough to be here to give us the news himself. i am very skeptical about the information he has provided. >> reporter: students are worried especially about whether the course credits they've earned here will transfer elsewhere. and some have financial aid packages totaling as much as $15,000. they don't know what will happen with those either. there are few direct answers about that in this letter to them from a.c.t. college president jeff moore. he concludes his letter by writing, we sincerely regret having to close our doors but are left with no other choice given the circumstances. in manassas, julie carey, news 4. meanwhile the school says it will try to provide information to help students complete their studies. when we come right back on news 4 at 4:00 ryan gosling is a real-life action hero. how the actor saved a woman's life in new york. ♪ ♪ >> and america saved her from going home from "the voice." now maryland's erin willett reveals what we'll hear next from her. crispy chicken three cheeses ♪ >> and the commercial that launched a social media firestorm. we'll tell you why this ad is so controversial and why that's not the reason burger king pulled the reason b[ woman ]g pulled when my asthma symptoms returned my doctor prescribed dulera to help prevent them. assignment will be to join the primetime team for the olympics on nbc. >> there you have it. ryan seacrest in london with nbc at the summer olympics. as for matt lauer's future there is less than a year left on his contract but he and nbc are reportedly close to a deal on a new contract. >> an interesting exchange. the back and forth between the two. wasn't it? i don't think ryan saw it coming. this time. unfortunately i don't think we'll see that last any time soon. we are going to see changes. take a look right now. just a beautiful day. yes, we have seen the cloud cover across the area but now the sun trying to break out across parts of the region as well. that sun helping to warm things up just a little bit today. temperatures in the 70s everywhere. current temperature right now at the airport 73 degrees. winds out of the northwest at about 12 miles per hour under these mostly cloudy skies. take a look at the numbers all around the region. nobody in the 60s. everybody in the 70s. frederick the coolest number at 70 degrees. but look in fredericksburg. 80 degrees. 80 in charlottesville. 73 in culpepper. 77 in la plata. down toward pax river. so a very, very warm afternoon. it's going to be a nice, warm evening, too. then we'll start to see some changes. still a lot of shower and thunderstorm activity. some of which just down to the south, just down to our south around cincinnati down toward raleigh and norfolk. that storm system that brought dallas the big time storms yesterday is now making its way across the area. the biggest storms now across the gulf and then back here in toward the high plains. no real severe weather. nothing like what we saw during the day yesterday. and notice this right here. this is actually a cold front that's going to bring down that colder air overnight tonight. here's what's happening around our region. a few showers and thunderstorms that i think will clip our southwestern viewing area down around maybe shenandoah county, rockingham and maybe around charlottesville. maybe as far north as culpepper but i expect most of us if not all of us to remain on the dry side. charlottesville, like i said, it could be you. most of us will stay dry for the rest of the evening and i think we're looking at a very nice evening. that cold front right now draped right across the area but you wouldn't know it by the temperatures. warm temperatures even right behind the cold front. the cold air still locked up around the great lakes. thunderstorm activity? just down to our south. that front will move down to the south tonight and behind it we'll see cooler air. when you wake up tomorrow morning you're going to notice a difference. temperatures in some areas will be down to the upper 30s most areas down to the low to mid 40s when you wake up tomorrow on your thursday and with plenty of sunshine, highs will struggle to get above the upper 50s tomorrow and with the wind it's going to feel fairly cool. especially when you consider where we are during the day today. same deal on friday. we're still going to see plenty of sunshine but once again it is going to be a very cool afternoon. temperatures will be a little bit below average but not too bad out there. partly cloudy, a great evening. nice and warm. 60 to 65 degrees. these are the temperatures between say 8:00 and 10:00 tonight. by tomorrow morning temperatures down to about 38 degrees in the city. 46 in the city rather and 38 in the suburbs. and bring your jacket. you may need that jacket when you step out the door tomorrow. not as warm. the story we first reported yesterday about a 79-year-old woman who was evicted from her apartment. >> her name is sarah owens. her belongings were out on the street and she had nowhere to go. our generous community rushed to her aid. shomari stone has our news 4 exclusive. >> makes me feel awesome. >> reporter: sarah owens is grateful the community came out to help after news 4 reported about her eviction from the apartments near the washington convention center. >> i'm ready to cry really. i'm filled up with joy because i have no immediate family. >> reporter: she has lived here since 1999. today her life was thrown out on the street. old records, lamps, a china hutch, a bag of important papers, she was the first female metro bus driver and worked for 25 years. she's also a two-time cancer survivor and says she used up all her money for alternative medicine. she owes more than three grand in rent and has nowhere to go. >> i decided to come and help. >> reporter: this guy donated his truck and another man agreed to store her belongings in a warehouse. one by one, random people loaded up her refrigerator, sofa, bags, boxes, everything she owns. >> i have help. and it's good feeling. >> reporter: this 14-foot box truck is almost filled up. move a little to the left and you can see there is still stuff up and down the block. not to worry. someone else chipped in and rented a couple more trucks. >> just trying to give back. >> reporter: and then sweet solutions apartment company gave her a temporary place to stay while she decides where she wants to live next. a community stepping up to help. >> god is good all the time. >> reporter: now she is deciding whether she wants to move back into this apartment complex. in case she does, well, a man we won't identify offered to give her the money so she can move back in and pay her rent. in northwest d.c., shomari stone, news 4. >> great end to that story. a new program is giving budding d.c. designers the tools to produce high fashion here at home. the d.c. fashion incubator is funded through a grant thanks to the district's art commission. it gives local talent the creative guidance to push their labels main stream. four people were chosen for the program. they've set up shop at a design studio donated by the washington convention center. >> it was great to have a place to go. a place to create. people to collaborate with who know, who knew what they were doing and 100% supportive of fashion in d.c. >> there are plans to move the designers to a 16,000 square foot wearhouse in anacostia to focus on manufacturing. the new space would be able to house up to 24 new designers. don't let your eyes fool you. the royal couple is now immortalized in wax. they are not moving. prince william and his wife duchess catherine of cambridge were unveiled this morning. the wax figures which cost $238,000 each show case their engagement announcement. spectators can pose with the newlyweds in new york and amsterdam, too. each location portrays the couple in a different style. looked like the real deal. dom nose, the pizza place, this has been abuzz today. it's putting its foot down and saying no to picky customers. >> that's right. the message no has never tasted so good. the new no applies to its line of artisan pizzas. the company says it will no longer let customers add or remove toppings from that line of fancier pies. starting tomorrow dominos will release new television ads explaining the policy. dominos says customers can still customize other pizzas. the company says it will still allow changes to artisan pizzas for customers with food allergies. >> so you just call them up and say i have a food allergy? how does that work? >> yes. then show a doctor's note. >> exactly. burger king commercial hit media outlets this week featuring soul superstar mary j. blige singing about chicken. >> it's been pulled after a wave of criticism. ♪ crispy chicken fresh lettuce three cheeses fresh dressing ♪ ♪ tasty tortilla >> that's blige singing about the burger king crispy chicken snack wraps. when the video went viral some members of the african-american community criticized the spot saying a black woman singing about chicken is a bit stereotypical. but burger king said it pulled the commercial because of a music licensing issue not because of the uproar. it hopes to have the singer's ad back on the air soon. >> interesting criticism. i don't get it. >> now there's a lot of buzz about it so burger king may be playing it. who knows? it's 4:35. still ahead, talk about a i've seen it 98 million times. i've seen it and every time the same ending. i mean, when is it going to -- >> an iceberg i think. something like that. hey, we got a great day out there today. >> yeah. >> you're telling us don't get used to it. >> i mean, don't get used to the heat. right now 75 degrees in most of the areas some areas near 80. i still think we're in for pretty nice weather over the next couple days. more spring-like weather, though. take a look outside right now and you can see it is simply gorgeous out there. we're starting to see some breaks in the clouds and that means bright sunshine and that sunshine helping to continue to warm us up. i wouldn't be surprised if we warmed up over the last hour. currently sitting at 73 degrees at the airport. this number may be a little bit higher with that sunshine. winds out of the northwest about 12 miles per hour. what are we going to be seeing? well, numbers around the region, 74 in rockville. 76 in hunting town. down toward warranton, look at warranton, 78 degrees down there. so a very warm afternoon all across the area. that means it is going to be a great night, too. storm 4 radar? nothing to show you as far as rain is concerned around the immediate area but just down to the south and west we are looking at some shower activity down around places like elkins, west virginia. maybe around charlottesville. maybe in through rockingham county. if you're going down 81 you may run into a few of those light showers but that is going to be really about it. overnight tonight though, we flip the page just a little bit. much cooler overnight tonight. really into the day tomorrow morning. 38 in frederick tomorrow morning. 39 in manassas. 46 in washington. so we will have some colder air making its way down but again this is cool air and, still, these temperatures will be above average. tomorrow's numbers, though, below average. down to about 60. up to about 60 in washington. 58 in leesburg. 57 in gaithersburg. temperatures a little bit below average but these are not bad numbers when we consider we're going to see some sunshine out there. so a pretty nice day out on our thursday. as we make our day through the day on friday, back into the low 60s. 61 on friday with plenty of sunshine. saturday and sunday right now looking very nice. a high of 65 on saturday. 70 on easter sunday. a lot of people have family coming over. things like that for the holiday. right now the holiday weekend looking very nice. >> all right. good to hear. thank you, doug. coming up on news 4, security video captures a violent robbery. the store clerk is beaten up as thieves go after the cash. >> police explain why they pepper sprayed a group of college protesters. i'm wendy rieger. marion barry's controversial comments about d.c. businesses. a health alert linked to sushi. what you need to know about a salmonella outbreak that sickened people in our area. and the big reveal. a recent traffic stop helped show case the real life super hero's charitable work with sick children in our area. coming up on news 4 at 6:00 lawmakers on capitol hill take a new step in the shooting death of that unarmed black teenager a pair of robbery suspects are on the loose in bakersfield, california after a violent attack on clerks at a check cashing store. security video captured the robbery with the clerks being roughed up. the clerks will bruised but not seriously injured just shaken up by the experience. police say the robbery was well coordinated with the suspects using walkie talkies to talk with their driver throughout the entire crime. [ chanting ] more than 30 students were peppered sprayed by police at a rally in southern california. this cell phone video shows about 200 students banging and chanting at a santa monica college board of trustees meeting. police say they were forced to pepper spray the students because some of them were trying to force their way in. they're fired up over a plan to offer a second tier of classes not subsidized by the state. that would mean tuition increases. still ahead on news 4 a woman relives the moment a car came out of nowhere and barely missed hitting her. for all your news be sure to follow news 4 online. search nbc washington on facebook and twitter. a connecticut woman says she is thankful to be alive after a suspected drunk driver plowed into a store missing her by the smallest of margins. elana gold mass more of the remarkable security camera video and gets the woman's reaction as she watches it for the first time. >> i just heard a loud boom and it just happened so fast i didn't even have time to react to that. >> reporter: she's talking about this frightening scene at the 7-eleven on cook street in waterbury monday night. take a look at what happened to her. she was standing at the counter when this suv slammed into the store and almost ran her over. peterson didn't know how close of a call it actually was until we showed her the surveillance video. it turns out she was planning to check out at the register where the car eventually crashed and she changed her mind at the last second. >> i think i'm very lucky. my angels are looking over me, because after seeing that video, it's hard to watch. >> reporter: she says she was buying a lotto ticket when suspected drunk driver kennedy dowdel plowed through this place and struck her in the back. >> i just know i felt that sharp pain and i kind of got pushed up against the register. >> reporter: but the threat wasn't over. she jumped on the counter to get out of harm's way when dowdel put this suv in reverse and backed out of the store. >> i'm pretty mad because i would never in a million years imagine that would happen to me. >> reporter: waterbury police tracked down dowdel a short time later here on hill street. they say he admitted to being drunk and that he took off because he was scared. >> any questions? >> no questions. >> reporter: on tuesday afternoon dowdel faced a judge where he was charged in connection to the crime and his lawyer spoke out in his defense. >> within the last year just got back from serving two tours, one in iraq and one in afghanistan. i think at the end of the day what you'll see here is that young men sometimes make mistakes. >> reporter: a possible mistake that sent genia peterson to the hospital. >> i'm happy to be alive. i'm going to cry. we have breaking news out of howard university tonight. news 4 at 5:00 starts right now. megamillions mess. new comments today from the maryland mcdonald's worker who claims she hit the jackpot but refuses to share with her co-workers. >> picking up the pieces in dallas. we will be live as residents assess the damage after that series of tornadoes. and bat man's other job. a recent traffic stop threw him into the spotlight but tonight we meet the man behind the mask. good evening everyone. welcome to news 4 at 5:00. i'm jim handly. >> i'm wendy rieger. we're going to begin with breaking news that involves howard university. there is a report tonight from the washington city paper that howard has temporarily suspended its athletics program. the paper published a statement from a howard university spokesperson saying the suspension is self-imposed and the university is conducting a review of the alleged violations. news 4 talked to the spokesperson who tells us an official release is coming as soon as we get that or learn more about this reported suspension we will bring it to you. there is a new twist in the megamillions mystery. today the mcdonald's worker from baltimore who claims to hold one of the three winning lotto tickets calls a press conference with her lawyer and then refuses to talk. news 4's richard jordan is in the newsroom with more on her calls now for privacy. hey, richard. >> hi, wendy. she didn't talk and didn't show the ticket. the woman bringing in legal counsel because she says she is afraid someone will come after her money. merlan wilson sits in silence.
