last of the light showers extreme southern maryland and the northern neck. you can see there, if you look where it says thursday, more breaks in the cloud cover. the skies will continue to clear out and that rain will continue to dry up as it heads east. to the west, a bit of snow in the high elevations down to the south. temperatures out there already in the 30s. generally 40s around here. 43 degrees in leesburg. 43 in mcclain and reston. 46 degrees in frederick. windchills are in the 30s already. as we drop tonight, we have a bit of wind around the area. boy oh boy, it is going to be demonstration started. people continue spreading their messages. >> hundreds of protesters are taking to the streets of washington. this video taken a short while ago. they march to the key bridge where they are now. police are keeping, here you go, with live pictures, police are keeping a close eye on the protesters. a sympathetic group called rdc. they are allowed to demonstrate on the sidewalk. they will be arrested if they disrupt traffic. similar demonstrations are taking place around the country today. michelle franzen has more. >> reporter: clashes between demonstrators and police in new york city escalated in the park where the movement began two months ago. protesters toppled barricades and violence erupted. one protester was let out of the park by police with what appeared to be a bleeding head injury. >> the police came through the park, started shoving people around. >> reporter: throughout the day, police arrested more than 100 protesters. the bulk of the arrest came when demonstrators marched to wall street, blocking traffic. tensions between police and protesters have been building. a sweep earlier to clear the parks of tents, sleeping bags and tarps. cities across the country are considering similar action. demonstrators are determined to make sure they keep the movement alive. >> the issues speak for themselves. people are in such dire straits they have no choice but to organize around the issues. >> social inequality and corporate greed have been resinating in the polls with the public. at the same time, the public and police are showing there is little tolerance when the peaceful protests turn violent. several police officers report being injured throughout the day including one officer treated for an eye injury after someone threw what was described as vinegar in his face. in lower manhattan, michelle franzen, news 4. traffic is expected to be a nightmare here for folks trying to drive across the key bridge. >> we have a long night ahead. danella joins us now. >> the traffic is normal for the time of day. the demonstrators are not causing delays yet. let's look at the roadways. 66 westbound, big delays. if you are coming from gw parkway to the beltway, 24 miles per hour. it will take 25 minutes to make that trip. the outer look at the american legion bridge, delays to the 95 interchange. 31 miles per hour. the dulles toll road, 24 minutes to make that commute. i'm going to watch your traffic all evening long. back to you. >> thanks. more details are emerging about the penn state child sex abuse scandal. there's growing concern art mike mcquery and as jay gray reports, there may be more victims than initially thought. >> reporter: the star witness for prosecutors. today, mike mcquery, the who saw jerry sandusky assault a boy spoke briefly from his home. >> i can't go into detail, but it will work out. >> he left immediately, distraught when he witnessed the assault. he contradicted that testimony in an e-mail to a friend saying i did stop it, not physically, but made sure it was stopped when i left the locker room. he said he has discussions with police. there's no police report or record of conversation between mcquery and officers or university police. adding to the questions, the fact that weeks after the incident, he was with sandusky at a charity flag football game and participated in a golf tournament that included sandusky. he's refused to discuss the discrepancies. >> some day, i'm not gouk to go into detail about anything, but, you know, i think it's obvious i tried to do the right thing. >> reporter: as the investigation continues, a source tells nbc news more potential victims reached out to investigators. no new charges have been filed. the first hearing september 6th. tim curley and schultz face perjury charges. sandusky's hearing is scheduled for the next day with a new judge. she's been replaced with a judge outside the county. she received a campaign contribution from a chairman from the charity. the new judge has no ties to penn state or the second mile charity. jay gray, nbc news. the man accused of firing shots at the white house has been charged with attempting to assassinate president obama. 21-year-old oscar ortega hernandez was arrested yesterday 200 miles from here. he waived his extradition and will be brought back to washington. police found a semiautomatic rifle. two bullets found on white house grounds. one hit a bullet-proof window. the president and first lady were away from the white house at the time. less than a week to go now for the so-called supercommittee to agree to a plan to slash the deficit by more than $1 trillion. both sides are still far apart. democrats say it may be possible to reach a bipartisan deal before the deadline, which is november 23rd. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: six days left for members of the supercommittee. the battle still rages over the two big issues, hiking taxes on the wealthy and cutting programs for the poor and elderly. >> wake up supercommittee. wake up! >> reporter: liberal democrats want a line drawn. >> we are not going to accept social security, medicare and medicaid cuts. >> reporter: moderate democrats like supercommittee patty murray say if there are to be cuts there has to be new revenue, too. tax hikes. she says republicans have to decide. >> whether or not to put real revenue on the table. once they resolve that and are willing to compromise then we can reach a deal. >> republicans, are reported backing $300 billion in new taxes. a compromise. but speaker john boehner knows that will be hard to get through the house. 72 of his members in a letter today said no to tax hikes. boehner charged democrats backed out of earlier deals. >> you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. the problem we have had all year is getting to yes. >> reporter: murray said democrats have said yes. >> we have met their offer on revenue. >> reporter: a deal she said is possible. there's another hopeful sign. it looks like the house, later tonight will pass a resolution to keep government from shutting travel is expected to be up. tsa is easing the procedures. the full body scanners are getting a software upgrade. children under age 12 can keep their shoes on while going through security. there will be plenty for us to complain about. >> i wonder whether taking our shoes off and restricting us to 3 ounces of liquid is protective. >> 90% of travelers are getting behind the wheel. gas is 50 cents a year's is more about cabin fever than fare. brian mooar, news 4. hundreds of occupy d.c. protesters are marching on the key bridge now marking the two month anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. police are keeping an eye on them. a group called our d.c., which is sympathetic to the occupy movement across the country. protesters are allowed to be on the sidewalk and are causing quite a distraction for moat riss. snail's pace here. everything has been peaceful. there will be arrests if it affects traffic. >> traffic is expected to be a nightmare if you are driving over the key bridge. we have a look at the gridlock. >> the good news is the demonstrators aren't really affecting traffic. we have normal rush hour delays right now. avoid it if you can. i'm somebody who likes to prepare. so far, looking at the roadways here, demonstrators aren't causing traffic issues. why not avoid it if you can? the key bridge as well. be on the safe side. other roads in the area not seeing too much of a problem as well. i have been checking other bridges for you. the wilson bridge and american legion bridge. congestion on the american legion bridge in both directions. 14th street bridge, delays there. no delays as you head southbound. northbound you are delayed from the 14th street bridge to the beltway. i'm here all afternoon long. i'll be back with another update. back to you both. >> thanks. a bathroom break led to a terror scare on a plane bound for laguardia. the airlines flight was coming from ashville, north carolina. the pilot decided he had to go to the bathroom. the locks jammed leaving him trapped inside. when the passenger went to the door of the cockpit, the co-pilot got suspicious and thought something was going on on the plane. he called air traffic control. here is how the story unfolded. >> can tan disappeared in the back. wenlt to use the restroom. by all indications by what i'm being told is he's stuck in the lav. >> declare emergency. get on the ground. is there any level of disturbance in the airplane? >> negative. the door latch -- had to get the door open. >> the pilot did eventually free himself. he cleared things up with air traffic control. police talked with the passenger and figured out all of this was a misunderstanding because he had to go to the bathroom. >> embarrassment 2000 feet up. >> yeah. caught on
