plead not guilty this morning to the sex assault charges against him. dominique strauss-kahn is accused of assaulting and trying to rape a maid at a manhattan hotel. strauss-kahn has been under house arrest since his release last month on $6 million bond. it includes 24-hour monitors and armed guards. if he's convicted he faces up to 25 years behind bars. former nfl star plaxico burress is a free man today. the former nfl new york giants wide receiver was released from prison in upstate new york today. burress was jailed after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh with an unlicensed handgun he took into a manhattan nightclub. before that incident burress was at the top of his game. he made the game-winning catch earlier that year in super bowl xlii. he plans to play in the nfl again. a woman is dead and two others seriously injured after a stabbing in fairfax county. this happened early this morning in an apartment complex along braddock springs road in centreville. that's where police found three people suffering from stab wounds. a man and woman were transported to a nearby hospital and another woman was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators say it appears to be the result of an isolate domestic argument. a massive wildfire burning out of control in arizona is threatening mountain communities and forcing evacuations today. the flames are being fueled by high winds and low humidity. this as a massive heat wave stretches across much of the u.s. kurt gregory reports on all of this wild weather. >> reporter: in arizona a raging wildfire is growing, threatening homes and lives. >> we just saw the fire burning around the house. >> reporter: and forcing evacuations in mountain communities. >> they said you have to leave now because the fire was right there so we had to turn around and leave. >> reporter: burning for more than a week, there is zero containment and more than 2,000 fire fighters are battling the blaze. the thick, rugged terrain is making the fire difficult to fight, now strong winds and low humidity are making a bad situation worse. >> because of the swirling winds, trying to put water down and retardant down on areas to try to save the town, but here we go. this is the sad part of it. >> reporter: 193,000 acres have been scorched. >> it is going to be a very hot fire. >> meanwhile, blazing heat is gripping much of the country from the upper midwest to south florida. temperatures are reaching into the mid-09s in chicago where on saturday the heat turned deadly. a 26-year-old man died while running a half marathon. nearly a dozen others were hospitalized for heat exhaustion. triple digit temperatures are setting records and in south florida, drought conditions have lake oak chobe in its lo lowest levels in four years. while it may feel like the dog days of summer, the calendar still says spring. the official start of summer is still two weeks away. kurt gregory, nbc news. >> there's been wild weather in other parts of the country, but here in the washington area today, mild weather. >> a nice start to the week. meteorologist veronica johnson says don't get too used to it. we have scorching weather ahead. >> it's pretty dom fortable across the area, but upper 80s the air temperatures throughout the area and when you look at june so far we've only had one day that was 90 degrees or higher. last year already we were up to two. so humidity again in the comfortable range, shaw, trinidad at 88 degrees. 86 in manassas, virginia, falls church and reston, 83 and bladensbu bladensburg, 83 degrees. close to 90 degrees in raleigh and knoxville close to 83. very high temperatures in the plains and it's the hot air that will be opening up and expanding eastward giving us the second heat wave so far of the year. so that's what we're going to be dealing with starting tomorrow as we get over 90 degrees and into the upper 90s by mid-week. for your 9:00 p.m. temperature, 76 degrees just a few clouds up there until 9:00 and we'll see the skies clear as we drop into the low 70s by 11:00 p.m. and midnight. a pleasant evening, so do enjoy it. higher temperatures first tomorrow and humidity and higher temperatures for the mid part of the week. we'll talk about the record setting heat coming up for wednesday and thursday. pat, back to you. >> thanks, veronica. another republican entered the presidential race today. former presidential candidate rick santorum declared the candace. . he was a major player during his time to the hill. steve handelsman has the story. >> reporter: like the rest of the republicans who are running, rick santorum blasted barack obama as a big spender. >> who are you, mr. president, to say that you and your administration should take 40 cents out of every dollar and borrow it from future generations to prop you up?
