>> early morning water main break made for hectic commute in northeast washington. it happened along new york avenue near montana avenue. here is a live look at new york avenue. near the scene where crews are still working at this hour to fix the break. it is expected to make a big impact on the afternoon commute as well. news4's tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: started around 3:30 this morning and flowed until after 7:00 a.m. >> it will probably take all day. we will dig it up. wasa has the water shut off. letting it drain out now. earlier it was blowing out of the street. should be no problem. >> reporter: the break happened on new york avenue at montana just one block west of lay tonsburg road. officials say the 12-win water main has been a problem before. last year crews had to repair the same pipe farther down the road. >> it is old pipe. it breaks. >> reporter: this morning's break caused asphalt to actually buckle. this morning police decided to detour traffic completely around the eastbound lane just in case. officials say the water somehow caused signals to go out in both directs. police were on hand to direct traffic. after the morning wore on outbound come muters felt the i am -- impact. >> it is ridiculous. i'm tired. i have to do a lot of detours. >> tracee wilkins, news4. >> vdot says the eastbound lanes of new york avenue will stay closed in that area while crews make repairs. if you usually travel that way you should use rhode island avenue and bladensburg road. let's get the latest now from the news4 traffic network. >> ashley linder has given us the big picture. how is it working out on the ride home now? >> as a result of this water main issue we certainly do have the delays approaching the interchange over there by west virginia, montana. view we were looking at earlier was new york at ninth street. as you can see it is pretty congested. delays begin before that. closer to florida avenue. which is almost a good thing. you can bail out at florida and take that down to bladensburg road and come back around bladensburg. it is not the oosiest work around and not fastest one. but it is moving and lines are open. as you get up to this intersection again you will be forced around the traffic circle more or less. it will just hop you over that intersection. then onward towards bladensburg, you have the notoriously short timing lights at the intersection there. once beyond that, then you start to pick up the pace. so it is certainly going to affect your drive home. you may want to consider route 1, rhode island avenue. better all aerntive the you have company there as well. >> all right, ashley, thank you. developing at this hour no, it has been five years. main suspect in natalee holloway's 2005 disappearance is now a suspect in the murder of another young woman. this time it is in peru. peruvian police are looking for joran van der sloot in connection with the death of 21-year-old sthefany flores. flores' father says there is a video of joran van der sloot with his daughter. joran van der sloot was arrested twice in the disappearance of holloway. the alabama teenager disappeared after a high school graduation trip to aruba. breaking news out of montgomery county. u.s. park police have found what they believe to be a body in the potomac river. it is not yet clear if it is belongs to one of the two people that disappeared in the river monday. crews have been searching for 35-year-old olga gaspar and daughter emily. they had attended a memorial day picnic near difficult run before they flip flood the river. family members say the two were swept away by strong currents in the river near difficult run. news4's john schriffen is on the story. more witnesses took the stand today in the d.c. trial of three men accused of covering up the murder of robber wone. prosecutors are trying to prove that roommates joe price and dylan ward and victor zaborsky tampered with evidence. today the defense cross-examined a woman who rented a room in the house. morgan testified. they all seem to get -- get along with wone. she also brought up the possibility of an intruder saying that the door had been left open in the past. news4's pat collins will have more on this case live from d.c. superior court. that's coming up right here on "news4 at 5:00" tonight. montgomery county police are asking for your help in finding a man wanted for murder and arrest warrant has been issued now for 28-year-old henry chavez. he stands 3'1" and weighs 85. chavez is accused of police say that he's been known to frequent silver spring and wheaton. anyone with information on chavez's whereabouts is urged to call police or crime solversal 8 6-411-tips. federal agents have seized dozens of powerful and potentially dangerous fireworks from the northeast washington home. authorities raided an apartment belonging to quinn williams after an undercover agent bought guns from william. agents found the fireworks inside the apartment. authorities say that the fireworks are so dangerous that they are licensed as explosives. >> major structural damage to the building he lived in. and all it would take is one case of those explosives to blow up his car. he had 20. >> he is now in custody facing federal charges. watch this hot air undercut the cooler air alot of. right now our front through areas of illinois and indiana, severe weather, over the last 24 hours, lot of wind, lot of hail. again, potential that we will see tomorrow. this weather pattern means whether systems moving along quickly. we will have the heat around through saturday, lot of steam, so a chance for thunderstorms just each day coming tax breaks should be used for research into clean energy. with the final two shuttle missions approach thing fall the federal government is helping preparing now to help nasa employees find new jobs. $15 million is being allocated through an emergency grant. the labor secretary announced the effort to assistant about 3200 workers who will be looking for jobs when the shuttle program is retired. there is a discovery flight in except and a final "endeavour" mission in november. when the shuttle program ends, the futures of about 20,000 contract and subcontract workers could be in jeopardy as well. actor charlie sheen is expected to be put behind bars as part after plea agreement in his ongoing domestic violence case. sheen worked out a deal in connection with an take on his wife. according to "people" magazine the actor will pled xwrilt guilt dwroy a misdemeanor offense next week. the judge approves sheen would serve up to 30 days in jail. the actor will reportedly still star in next season's cbs show "2 1/2 men." the latest now on the fallout over israel's botched raid on a flotilla headed for gaza this week. israeli officials have deported the pro-palestinian activists detained during that raid. there are 682 activists from 42 countries. more than half of them are from turkey. the incident has badly strained ties with the nation that had been one of tel aviv's strongest muslim allies. israel continues to insist its forces were defending themselves and the deputy defense minister told parliament today that two of the activists were killed after they wounded two commandos with the israelis' own weapons. but several activists say israel opened fire without warning. through small towns of england, a taxi driver went on a shooting spree today killing at least 12 people and injuring 25 others. using a shotgun. this horror unfolded in rural towns across northwestern england. people were shot in 30 different locations across 20 miles. in tend police say the gunman, taxi driver, derek byrd, shot and killed himself. multiple shootings are rare in britain where gun ownership is tightly restricted and handguns are banned. a utah woman filed a lawsuit against google. her math teacher led her along an unsafe path that led her to be hit by a car. the woman was using google maps to walk from one part of the city to another and she is now suing for (announcer) get your first full prescription free and save on refills. we all get cases of the midnight munchies. you have to be careful. it could be hurting more than your waistline. >> yes. here is the buzz kill for you. new study by researchers at the university of copenhagen shows midnight snack king damage your teeth. they looked at 2,000 adults. those who ate a quarter or more of their daily calories after dinner lost more teeth than those who ate mostly during the day. experts say that saliva flow slows down at night and leaves debris on your teeth. it can -- putt can't wait until morning experts say brushing your teeth should minimize the damage. always brush before bedtime. >> and after you snack at midnight. the first step to staying trim may be as easy as tidying up your house. that's according to a new study from indiana university. researchers looked at nearly a thousand adults living in an urban setting and how neighborhood conditions affected physical activity. they found that the only link to staying fit was the interior of someone's house. however, researchers say the study raises several questions. they hope to do further studies to determine whether the cleaning was the way the participants worked out or part of their personality. >> i will agree with that. i'm like a bumblebee around my house. >> you are a cleaner. that's right. >> need to work on you, jim. what have you got buzzing with the weather? "news4 at 5:00" begins now. good evening, everybody. welcome to "news4 at 5:00" tonight. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. wendy rieger is off tonight. we begin this evening with breaking news from montgomery county. u.s. park police found what they believe to be a body in the potomac river. it comes on the third day of the search for a missing mother and daughter who were swept away in the river during a memorial day outing. news4's john schriffen is at the river and has this report. >> reporter: from the water, air, and land, authorities teamed up for day three of the massive search to find 35-year-old olga gasfar and 13-year-old emily. the authorities say they were swept away around 5:00 p.m. monday by the strong potomac river currents after the daughter tried to save her mother who had slipped in. around 2:00 today, authorities were pulling their boats of the water after another exhaustive search. minutes later, a call over the radio came in. the team rushed downstream near lock six where montgomery county fire
