begins to change. i'll tell you the details for the week ahead when i join you. there's considerable concern tonight for three missing girls from louden county. they're teenagers and they haven't been seen since last wednesday. today, one father broke down, worried that a gang may be involved in their experience. jackie benson has our report. >> reporter: has anyone seen these three 8th graders? the parents of natalie, alison and jocelyn gathered togethe for support, they ar sick with worry. the girls were last seen wednesday january 6th when they were drooped off at the middle school, security cameras captured them texting someone, but they never entered the school. later on that day there was a call to the school office saying the girls were sick and wouldn't be in school today. >> we're not ruling anything out at all. and we're just working every single lead to try to find where these kids are. >> reporter: alison's father thinks the girls may have decided to skip school, then got caught up in something very fright thing. >> don't hurt her. don't hurt my daughter. don't do anything to her. i want her back. >> reporter: the parents tell us the girls have no history of running away, they're very concerned that they may have been lured away by a gang. now, anyone with information as to the location of these girls is asked to call the crime line, that number is 703-443-tips. you do not have to give your name. and as you can tell, the parents are very very concerned. live in leesburg, jackie benson. president obama responded to some controversial comments harry reid made about him during the presidential campaign. he likened mr. obama's chances because he's a light-skinned africaamerican with no negro dialect. reid says he should have chosen better words. president obama agreed, but also defended the senate majority leader today. >> i've apologized to the president. i've apologized to everyone within the sound of my voice. >> this is a good man who's always been on the right side of history. for him to have used some inartful language in trying to praise me. and for people to try to make hay out of that makes absolutely no sense. >> republicans are calling for reid's resignation. meanwhile, a group known as african-americans for harry reid plan to go ahead with fund-raising this weekend. general stanley mcchrystal today said he's seen more optimism among the afghan people, since president obama approved the ramp up last month. seven in ten afghans support the presence of u.s. forces in their country. 61% favor the military buildup. that support is less popular in the east andhe south where the taliban is entrenched. fighting in southern afghanistan today ended with the deaths of six nato troops, including three americans. dozens of human rights activists got together outside the white house today to protest continued use of guantanamo. they called on president obama to make good on his pledge to shut down the prison within a year. the group opposes the practice of holding prisoners without charging them. some demonstrators wore orange jumpsuits with black hoods over their heads. the gun probe involving gilbert arenas is still bng presented to a grand jury. three players met with law enforcement officials today. d.c. police launched their investigation into an incident involving guns being pulled into the locker room on christmas eve. there are reports that arenas has been questioned about the case but would not testify on the grounds of self-incrimination. the nba has suspended him indefinitely. mark mcgwire admitted he used steroids for nearly ten years. his admission came almost five years since he would into the admit anything in front of congress. more than 10 years since a record break season that he had. more on why mcgwire spoke out today. >> he's the second player within a span of a year to admit the steriod use. mark mcgwire said today he wanted to tell the truth and to admit to using steroids when he was questioned five years ago, but he lied to protect his family as well as himself, because he could not get immunity. he broke his silence to his family and the public. it was five years ago, he could have owned up to the fact he was using when he hit that home run record of 70 homers back in 1998. he refused to answer any questions during that hearing. he said he wasn't there to talk about the past. tonight he spoke on the record to bob costas of the mlb network, admitting to using steroids on and off for ten years. he began taking them to help cope with injuries. >> the status of where i was at and the pressures that i had to perform and what i had to go through to try to get through all these injuries is a very very regrettable thing. and i -- i wish it never came into my life but we're sitting here talking about it. and i'm so sorry that i have to. i apologize to everybody in major league baseball. my family, the maris', bud selig. today about his a water main break flooded part of dupont circle this morning. a lot of water mains have been breaking recently because of the cold weather. the break this morning happened because a construction crew accidentally hit a 20-inch pipe. reports of a gunman on campus locked down a d.c. high school today on benning road in northeast around lunchtime. police searched for the gunman, but never found him or a weapon. traffic was shut down around the school while police conducted their search. as a precaution, phelps high school nearby was also locked down for a short time. the last surviving woman who protected anne frank from the nazis has died. she helped hide the jewish teenager and her family for two years in the netherlands during world war ii. this is the woman who kept anne frank's diary for safe keeping and later saw that it was published. she was 100 years old. still to come tonight, dangerous driving on the beltway. >> bikers behaving badly on local roadways, we period. a lot of these motorcycle drivers get involved in a fatal or serious accident you. >> want to get out of the way and let the go and keep your distance, as far as you can do it. >> reporter: for law enforcement, this is reckless driving. it could net a driver a fine somewhere north of $500. >> if we see a violation, we conduct an investigation, they can be held responsible for the laws been taken off youtube. >> derrick ward, thank you. the cost of flying is going up again. delta airlines raising its checked bag fees tomorrow on flights booked after january 5th. $23 for the first checked bag, $32 for the second checked bag at the airport ticket counter or kiosk, the fees go up $2 a piece. usairways raised its maximum fees to those same amounts last year. continental is raising its fees later this week. cadmium is an element even more dangerous than lead and it could be in some of your children's toys. an investigation found that some chinese companies are putting large almost 20 degrees below average around the las, only 5 too 10 degrees below average. our current temperature here in washington, 31 degrees. meanwhile, it's been mild out west. there were som records set in the state of washington. there's that overall pattern we've had so much of with the cold air coming in, but as we get later into the week, that will begin to recede to the north, at least the overall jet pattern, here we are in washington, there are the laboring snow flurries for you folks around calbert county into charles county. a little bit of excitement, but that's all it is out to the west. there have been a few more, and still some out of the mountains in west virginia. reports from bob lefler of 50 to 60 inches of snow on the ground in the mountains of west virginia. overnight tonight we'll continue to see that cold air coming in with northwest early winds. later on in the week, high pressure begins to come in, this time if will be moving a little to our south, so eventually we'll see the winds turning into the west, and milder air coming in. not tomorrow, though. temperatures in the mid-30s for highs. maybe a lingering flurry west to northwest. 25 degrees, a bit of a windchill, not any howling winds, breezy and cold. tomorrow afternoon it will be partly sunny. temperatures once again, every day almost since january 1st have been below average, that will be about it, we'll begin to see a little bit of moderation on wednesday. it's really thursday and friday that for a change, at least the high temperatures will be in the mid to high 40s, and the only may only be around the freezing mark. i think anything on sunday is very, very appealing. if it did anything at all, it may be some raindrops. >> maybe 40s? >> that's hot, open the pools. jay leno 19 points. maryland just barely squeezes out the victory. 61 to 60 over the cavaliers. >> that girl, annette kaiser is a lot of fun to watch. she sizzles on the court. that's my recommendation, next time you're at a we talked about the changes coming to nbc's late nightlineup. nbc plans to move jay leno back to his old 11:35 time slot. that would have an impact on the tonight show and late night
