says the response to north korea will be firm after the north fired dozens of rounds of artillery on to a south korean island. seral houses reportedly erupted into flames and residents rushed to evacuate. south korean tv showed plumes of smoke rising above the island, home to over 1,000 people. there are unconfirmed reports that at least one south korean marine was killed and others injured. the latest round of shelling appears to have stopped. the incident prompted south korea to scramble fighter jets. this comes amid already increased intentions over the north's claim that it has a new uranium enrichment facility. here at home as travelers pack their suitcases, tough security officials are largely sticking by airport screening methods. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: with a peak travel day looming wednesday, the tsa said it will pick fewer passengers for pat-downs, hoping travelers do not protest by the refusing body scans and demanding time consuming physical inspections. >> let's not tie up those people who just want to go home and spend time with loved ones. >> but many tavelers are angry. this was atlanta. >> i don't believe tsa has ever found aterrorist. >> tom sawyer says his agent wouldn't listen. >> totally ignored my three requests to tell him of my condition. >> so the agent pressed too hard on a bag tom wears to collect his urine and washington. this morning, an investigation in under way in cambodia to determine what caused a day of celebration to turn into utter panic, chaos, and what's being called the world's worst stampede in years. it's not clear what triggered the disaster that left 378 people dead and several hundred more injured. annabel anders reports. >> reporter: people who had been celebrating the last night of cambodia's water festival on the banks of the river. it was a celebration that ended in horror. spectators were pked on to an island for a concert. it's thought a few fainted, sparking panic and a stampede. as people rushed to escape and get ofthe island, a packed bridge became a death trap where those who fell were trampled under foot. others jumped off into the river below d drown. hospitals were overwhelmed. blankets covering row upon row of bodies left in corridors while medics were forced to treat the injured. one local journalist describes the scene. >> a couple of people pfainted. there were barriers set up to prevent people from spilling on to the road, everyone backed up and couldn't get ou there was a panic and a stampede and a lot of people jumping off the bridge. a lot of people can't swim so there's no doubt lot of people drown. >> reporter: thursday have been declared a day of national mourning here. the question of why this happened will certainly follow. annabel roberts. >> just horrible. >> now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. a rare late november tornado ripped through northern illinois yesterday. amateur video shows the fast-moving funnel sweeping through the area, knocking down power lines and causing mor infrastructural damage. more than 42,000 homes lost power. also five kids and a bus driver were injured during the storm when heavy winds reportedly picked up their school bus and threw it about 100 feet off the road. authorities say their injuries are minor, though tre were complaints of back pain. offials in colorado are taking no chances this season, especially with the wind and snow that has whipped up ideal avalanche conditions. they're avalanche blasting in an effort to reduce the potential of a huge avalanche form b, a dangerous threat that comes with above normal snowpack depth. in florida, a local lawyer gave ay thousands of turkeys in his community. in a pleasant twist, some of the people in line passed on the favor, hoping to buy more turkeys r ohers to claim. that's the spirit of the season. now for a look at your national and regional weather, here is nbc meteorologist bill karins with of the wisconsin border, all in nortrn illinois and a lot of hail reports, too. thankfully today we're not going to see any severe weather, but there's a lot gog on. we have heavy rain through the tennessee valley, rain up through ohio. on the backside, there's a lot of cold air moving down into the central plains for our friends in areas like uta especially high elevations and salt lake city itself, blizzard warnings re in effect. this is one storm heading east. this is a second one right behind it. thankfully, the first one is weakening. the tornado watche are expired and now we're watching areas of heavy rain along 40 from memphis to nashville. the worst weather will be found in areas like utah and salt lake city, gusty winds and blowing snow. billings, montana, only 5 degrees washington's murder cases. ingmar guandique was found guilty of killing chandra heavy y. he could face 30 years to life in prison. the 24-year-old intern disappeared in may 2001. her remains were found one year later by a man walking his dog in rock creek park. it wasn't for another seven years that charges were filed. nine and a half years after her disappearance the person charged has been
