Heartbreaking night on dancing with the stars. It was kind of sad. I know my grandma is watching down probably smiling. Lauries grandmother tomb whom she was very close, passed away last week. Just one day after laurie taped an interview about her for the package that aired before last nights dance. Very, very proud of you. Covering my ears for the whole three minutes, that the package played. So, that helped a lot. But is was still pretty hard just because i understood the circumstances and still had to fox trot which earned a perfect score was over. After a trying week of rehearsals. He kept telling me to put everything moo nigh dance the i dont have to say anything. I can just, put that ee motion into my dancing. Usic] hi, my name is gail renner. And im kevin. I believe in my hometown, secaucus, new jersey. Well, i was originally born in queens, new york. From there, i worked my way into the city. And then i was on the Upper West Side when i met gail. Gail weve been together for 10 years, kevin g i think that you said that in your profile and i loved dogs, so i said, why dont we meet and walk our dogs . I didnt really want to do anything else but that. It was just kind of like a meeting. I wanted to make sure you werent a weirdo. And then we were together from then on. Kevin yep. Gail yeah. Kevin for me, it was always the conversations. We were always talking and we would always have great conversations. To this day, we still have great conversations. We still hold hands, just like when we were first dating. And i dont see a lot of couples that we know gail kevin likes to take care of me. He likes to take care of our dogs. Youre a good caretaker. Adventurous, too. Kevin i race on a local amateur cycling team. Ive been racing now for the past four years. Ive always loved cycling, ever since i was a kid. So i used to take the little maps from the back of the phonebooks this is way preinternet and id map out routes and see where i want to go and stuff like that. Now, tragically, gail was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease not long ago, which really turned her whole life upside down turned both of their lives upside down. Gail and kevin had to move back into gails childhood home to be closer to her family. Gail i was 28 when i was told i had a liver problem. And i was fine for many years. I took medicine. Everything was ok. And then, all of a sudden, i got very sick. I was admitted to the hospital and i was told that my best option is to get a living donor liver transplant. At you can even transplant part of your liver and it will grow and regenerate and you can have two livers out of one. I went to get tested, found out we were the same blood type, and then we got the call that we were a match and we could do the surgery. And i remember saying, oh, we have a slot open in a month so can we schedule you for then . And im like, uh, can i tell gail first . George oliphant gail, she was terminally ill. She had one shot. And that was kevin. Live in this World Without you. And thats love. We had no clue we were the same blood type and anything like that. Well, yeah. Thats really crazy. So the destiny part of it, yeah. So she said, we met online, and i always kid around with her that she was scrolling through the pictures and saying, look, oh, his liver looks pretty healthy. Maybe ill shoot him an email. I dont like thinking about the odds of what would have happened if it wasnt i would have had to wait for kevin and how sick she would have got. Le dying while theyre waiting for an organ because theres not that many organ donors. Kevin means a lot to me. I mean, just the thought that he was able to donate part of his body, risk his life to save me, is incredible. I get to keep my best friend is what it has been for me. And so every day that she wakes up and is feeling good, for me, thats my gift. Gail my parents built this home when i was a baby. And we lived upstairs and my grandparents lived downstairs. It was a blessing that my parents still own this house that we had the ability to come here, because we needed a place that was quiet and a place where i would be able to recover. This house was built in the 70s and it still has a lot of 70s character, ill say. When i come into this room, especially, i think of i had my fifth Birthday Party in here. For some reason, he had a bar. And its very funny that im a liver transplant patient that obviously cant drink, cant drink on medicine, so i have bar. We basically made it a storage area. Kevin its a bike shop now. Gail yeah. So its good memories but i would like to have our own memories. The house hasnt been touched in 40 years. Its so overwhelming what would need to be done. Its almost like so much that we its surprise time. For a rescue to happen, i would like him to have whatever he wants. This room in general, this is kind of like his room. He works out in here. I would want it to be updated for you. It would be a great ending to a good story. [music playing] hows it going . George oliphant, nice to meet you. Kevin hey, george, nice to meet you. Oh my god. Gail hey gail, how are you . Nice to meet you guys. So surprise gail yay were here to rescue you. I was just sharing your story about being an organ donor and saving your life and just everything that you guys have done for each other. Kevin thank you so much. Oard more awareness of people definitely. Being organ donors and getting out there and saving lives. Gail for sure. Oh my god, im shaking. Im so happy. Oh my god, this is so great. Yeah. So let me see what were dealing with because i know a little thing or two about updating a space. Gail i think so. Kevin and so weve seen. Gail yeah, weve seen it. Now that weve let kevin and gail know that were coming to the rescue, its time to bring in the experts. I got nick from Avo Construction helping us out. Hes our gc doing all of the nuts and bolts of the project. Coming in to add some beauty and some charm. Lets get this underway. I think its only appropriate that, to kick off demo, we ring the bell. So you guys ready . All yeah all right, here we go. Oh, well, were going to have to fix the bell. But thats all right, lets do this. Where to begin about what i do not like about the room. It really seems like it doesnt fit gail and kevins needs at all. So nick has two sledgehammers. Hes got a big regular sledgehammer for himself, and then he gave me this little guy. At first, i thought this was an insult. Until i started swinging it. I was laughing at first, but i gotta say, this mini sledge, its got some power. Its not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. Bowwowwow. Woo nick there you go. This wood paneling, its a quarter inch thick. Its really what they used back in the 60s and 70s. Its really cool because theres so many pieces. George oliphant taking the wood off the walls all of the demo in the living room done, i wanted to get a head start on picking out our floors. So i got stacy here from empire today. Hi. Great to be here. Stacy, jennifer. Jennifers our designer. And we got a lot of options. How do we pick out the right floor for our space . Well, you know, picking out flooring can be overwhelming because youre right, there are so many options. But at empire today, we really make it easy for our customers. And because we have this really unique shop at home service, we actually come to your house with the samples and then, our experts come out and install. So its soup to nuts and the customer never has to worry. Jennifer i love having a lot of options so i am really happy that they brought us a lot of samples. I have my eye on a darker brown sample called gunstock. And im hoping that george likes it, too. You wanna vote . Yes, should we vote . Gunstock. Gunstock. Gunstock. Its unanimous. One issue and this, i havent even brought up to you or nick but i just love to go big. Ing flow, do you think he would be down for that . Jennifer i love that idea. This is one of the hundreds of products we actually have in stock, which means, yes. This can be installed next day. You know what that means . We got work to do. Yeah. Hey, nick . Yes . Hey, were going to demo the kitchen, too, we decided. [music playing] narrator george to the rescue is sponsored in part by 3m. Yes . Hey, were going to demo the kitchen, too, we decided. I dont think nick knows what just him. I mean, here he is doing his best to make his living room awesome, and we just threw the kitchen on top of that. And now it turns out the floors are going to be here before we know it. So this kitchens got to get pulled apart. I mean, from what weve found in here, its a wellbuilt house. Its a very wellbuilt house, yes. So, most likely, all of our cabinetry is going to be fine. We can totally keep that. 100 . So the cabinets are in very good shape. Were going to take the doors out and bring new doors in and paint the inside. Arte tile. Lets do this. Should we get some of the guys . Yes. We have the heavy hitters. Victor, come give us a hand, man. Pure muscle. He looks like a tank. This guy. His biceps are the size of my head. Nothing against you, buddy. Im right here too. By the way, guys, i went to a little workout stretch class this morning so im feeling limber. How awesome are these counter tops, compared to what they had . Hat . I dont want any of this getting leaked to the family before the reveal. We have a truckload of our empire today flooring. Wow. I am literally floored. This is beautiful. You guys did a great job. Theyre going to love this for years to come. And i love that you preserved the memory of what the house used to be, and yet, it has a modern flair. Eaction. Me too. I think theyre going to be really happy. Nick yes, i agree. Oh, looks like we got ourselves a little damage here in our new sheet rock. Not a problem. Easy to fix with 3m large hole repair. And you see you got these rough edges right here . You want to sand those down, make them nice and smooth. Its time for the backing. You just roll it up like so and you put it in the hole. Hold tight for 30 seconds. Now it is time to use the 3m wall repair compound. Get yourself a nice dollop, spread the compound, and slightly overfill the hole with your knife. Now we gotta let it dry and then well sand ile they continue to get things buttoned up, im going to go check in on kevin and gail. Keeping the transformation a surprise has been extra difficult, because kevin and gail are staying across the street at her parents house. But mums the word, literally. [mumbling] and throw the key. Seeing george today, hes pretty tight lipped about whats going on. He wouldnt give us any hints. But were really excited to see it. My transplant was three years ago this past june. I hope that other people will realize while watching this that you dont have to be some cadaver donating an organ to save somebodys life. That you can save a friend, a family member, a stranger, a loved one. And that doesnt mean thats the end of my life. Youre still riding youre obviously an avid cyclist. Right. For the liver, its actually amazing. Its a part that grows back. But im sure that jen and nick are wondering where in the heck i am, so i should probably get back to the job site so i can finish up your house. Kevin yes. Looking forward to it, thanks george. No problem. Bye, guys. Take care. Narrator george to the rescue is sponsored in part by empire today. Empire makes getting beautiful new floors easy. We have a transformation well underway, construction is buttoned up, now its time to get our design on. I have to say, the wood on the floor looks a lot better than it did on the walls. The whole space is bright and airy now. Doesnt feel like a cave anymore. Not at all. It totally flows. Its very inviting and comfortable. Were gonna start by base painting up different values. Ok. So going from dark to the lightest color up here. Excellent. And then, once thats done, well mix a glaze color and glaze through the whole wall. Ok. To give it a nice smooth transition. So i see you guys got your 3m tape out, i like to see that. A little scotch blue. Our favorite. Whats nice about this tape its got the edge lock technology, so youre sure to get it feels like a room now. Yes. Like with the wall painted and the texture and the ombre and all that. You aint seen nothing yet. I know, right . We havent even put any furniture in yet. No. All the furniture is here. Look who oh, man, it would not be design day if we didnt have trouble getting the couch into the space. Anyone have butter . Nick can you grab this and go this way nice and slow for a second . George oliphant oh, yeah. Nick keep going. Keep going. Keep going. So close so we have a lot to do today, and if we have to take the door off to get the sofa in, its just one u never know. Weve got to get it in. Nick keep going. George oliphant youre in. Jennifer yay. George oliphant thats nick right there. See . Cool, calm, and collected. Come on. Does nick not looking exactly like the soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo . Not a hair out of place. Oh, come on. Take a load off. It looks great in here. It was worth all the effort. Bonnie and clyde . Hey, whats this fabric . Yeah, is that beautiful . Its beautiful. All the fabric is romo. The sofa is lewis mittman. I really pulled together an eclectic mix of furniture. I didnt want it to be too severe in any one direction. All the Window Treatments are up. Deco by designers did an amazing job and finished the room beautifully. They got a new sink, new counter, new paint, new water filter system filtrate. I love this because its super simple to install and it makes a very big difference in the taste of your water. Nick i love everything about the project. Im very happy to have been part of this. Jennifer did a fantastic job. George oliphant gail and kevin so good to see your smiling faces. The tv, you can watch the tv. We came here because we had to come here because of the surgery and while gail was recovering. Gail now we like it. Kevin our house, yeah. Never in a million years did i think it was going to come out this nice. This new renovation its given them a lift. I think they both love it and i think they feel more like this is a home. So thank you so much for letting us come in and transform your space around. This experience will always keep the positivity that we have. Just because well always have this to look back on. I mean, this will be a story well be able to tell forever. To this day, i still cant believe that shes gone. If i would have known then what i know now, i would have spent more time with her. Its just hard. They married young and started a life together in the rugged beauty of montana. Its kind of a hidden nugget that not a lot of people know about. She charmed all the locals. Very vibrant. Delightful is the word that comes to mind. For newlyweds brian and kathryn, big sky country was a paradise. For one of them it would also become a grave. Kathryns lifeless body found in the river. She said, accidents can happen. I said, this was no accident. Kathryns husband agreed. They told people she was drinking, she was crying and threatened to kill herself. Suicide . Her friend didnt buy it. Somebody had done this to her. This investigator thought so, too. I had to lay it all out on this huge conference table. And i said, wait a minute. The andersons heard her die. A dark and damning tale. But would a jury believe it . I made a promise that i will find out who did this and i will make sure that theyre brought to justice. Im lester holt and this is dateline. Heres Keith Morrison with the reckoning. Dreams seem to flow the current wills them to safety or to sorrow. Here is where they came, the newlyweds, to their own beautiful river, their montana eden, where they dreamed their dreams. And where now these decades later the silent water may finally give up their secrets. Theres never been anything thats been the same since that day. Sherry harper is talking about a mystery that seemed beyond solving. The inexplicable thing that happened to her, sherrys sister, kathryn. You tell people, and youre hearing yourself speak. And youre thinking this is like something you see on tv. Do they understand . They dont. And how could we possibly expect them to . And so you go back to the beginning. Past. And we did everything together. This is kathryns childhood best friend, melissa. Either she was at my house or im at her house constantly. Like sisters in a way . We were. We were. We played together. She just had such a zest for life. The memories are idyllic, said melissa. Under the sun in the Swimming Pool in kathryns backyard. She was a strong swimmer . She was. She swam every day. Sherry was the big sister, kathryn the youngest with a brother, thomas, wedged in between them. She was a champion equestrian rider. She wanted to continue that and then go to veterinary school. So, yes, she loved animals. But most of all she loved him. He was a part of her life every single day. His name was ralph. And it was her child. One of those little yes, he was a person. He thought he was a member of that family, and he was. Was with her at college, Southern Methodist in dallas, where she scored as and row crew, jumped horses and was captain of smus polo team. There one day on the grassy polo field she met a boy. Brian. Brian laird, another polo player, son of together. And in the summer, working together in ft. Smith, montana, population 161. Its a tiny little town. And you get to know everybody really well. And Everybody Knows pretty much what everybody else is doing. That theres a town at all is due to the bighorn river on which june and gordon rose ran a fishermen is Something Like mecca. It just had such a massive population of fish per mile. Theres only half a dozen places like that in the world. Brian worked as a fishing guide, kathryn worked in the tackle shop. They had both just graduated. Theyd come to the river in the summer, you know, for summer jobs. And then after brian finished law school, in the winter of 1999, they got married. The newlyweds moved to billings, small law practice. Kathryn put vet school on hold to help brian run the office. But brians heart wasnt really in the law. Not when the bighorn was calling. So they bought a mobile home in fort smith. Ft. Smith. And the two of them picked up where their summer jobs left off. We didnt use him very often as a guide. But we did let him carry a tab in the store. People. And kathryn . Delightful is the word that comes to my mind. Very vibrant, intelligent, devoted. Devoted to what . To brian. Oh, okay. She was working three jobs that summer. Thats true. She worked in our store, cleaned rooms at another lodge and then the shuttle business. And she was a really hardworking. Never showed up for work late. All that spring and early summer of 99 kathryn and the roses and the the other ft. Smith fly fishing outfitters worked the river dawn till dark. And the current carried fish and dreams and sparkling flies and darker things. It was the morning of july 31st. One of kathryns coworkers burst into the tackle shop. Have you seen her . She didnt show up for work. Did she say anything to you . I said, no. And she was very worried. And so the other person that was working with me that day said, well, ill run over to their trailer and check on brian. But brian, roused from a deep sleep, had no idea where kathryn was. Somehow, in the middle of the night, she had vanished into the vast wilderness of montana. When we come back, the search for kathryn is on. A friend makes a stunning discovery in the river. She alerted the authorities right away. And a family grapples with the unthinkable. I just remember lots of hysterical crying, screaming. A terrible dread spread up and down the bighorn river that morning of july 31, 1999, when Kathryn Laird failed to turn up for work. A missing persons report was filed. So did her neighbors. And pretty one one of them, driving past a reservoir the locals call the after bay, saw something in the water. Looked human. She alerted brian right away. She alerted the authorities right away. Brian laird raced to the after bay, plunged into the freezing water, carried the body to shore. It was kathryn. It was too late. By then, a gaggle of Law Enforcement had arrived. It was crazy. Many entities out there. You got fbi, you got dia, you got the park service, you got county jurisdiction, you have state jurisdiction. But it was the fbi whose agent took charge of the scene. Kathryn was found wearing sweatpants and a shirt and a bra, but no shoes or socks. Her white 4runner was located in a parking inside the vehicle they found her purse, eyeglasses, some prescription antidepressants of brians and a half empty bottle of tequila. The shellshocked brian was driven 40 miles to a doctor in hardin, montana, and sedated. And 1,000 miles away in texas, sherry got a call from her mother. She says, she just received this horrible telephone call from brian. All he kept saying was, theres i just remember lots of hysterical crying, screaming. My mom just saying, shes gone. Sherry rushed to her mothers house. Thats when she said, kathryn drowned. And i said, no, she did not. And she said, accidents can happen. And i said, no. I assure you this was no accident. My sister would not drown. Did you have an idea what happened . No. Melissa. Im like, who are you talking about drowned . She could swim. What are you talking about . Not just swim but swim. Yes. All i could picture was the Swimming Pool. A distraught family flew to montana. Brian met us at the airport. What sort of state was he in . Very lethargic. You could tell he was taking something. Yeah. To calm him down. What happened . The night before, said brian, he sleep, he said, and she, agitated, upset, woke him up, asked him to take care of ralph as if she was never coming back to the dog she loved since a child, then got into her 4runner and drove away into the night. Last time he saw her alive, he said. She must have taken his pills with her. That tequila, must have downed so much booze and accidentally or much more likely, he said, she committed suicide. Brarns parents had arrived and they had some hard questions about kathryns family about her emotional state. How long had kathryn been depressed . And both of us are like, what are you talking about . Well, thats how she died. She apparently took pills and drank an excessive amount of alcohol and she drowned. There was an autopsy, of course. Two, in fact. And this was odd, given the there wasnt any alcohol in her body. No trace of those pills, either. Two medical examiners agreed on the cause of death. Poor kathryn had drowned. But as for the manner of death . Accident . Suicide . Homicide . They just couldnt say. So it was ruled undetermined. Wed made all the emergencyments through the home so she could be flown home so we could say our goodbyes. Five days after her death, brian took ralph the dog and left ft. Smith for missouri, where he moved in with his parents. And along the river, life went on. The fishing season was peaking, so much to do. And the sad story of the beautiful young woman who had drowned herself in the icy after bay faded, as stories will. Not forgotten, not exactly. But over. Not by a longshot. I made a promise to her when i saw her in her casket that i will find out who did this to her. And i will make sure that theyre brought to justice. Coming up kathryns family begins its own investigation and is troubled by the findings. When Kathryn Laird was found dead in the bighorn river and her family was told she had drowned, they were profoundly skeptical. They knew kathryn was a powerful swimmer. A water accident seemed most unlikely. As for suicide, they didnt buy it. Kathryn phoned home often, they said, and never sounded depressed. And even though the medical examiners left manner of death undetermined, her family had so agent Randy Jackson called him at his folks home in missouri. He didnt offer much. Im just totally in the dark here. I dont know if my wife you know, if she died because she took too many sleeping pills. I have no idea. In a series of phone calls, jackson tried to cajole him back to montana to discuss the case. Do you anticipate that youd be able to come back and spend a few minutes speaking with me oh, not not too soon, probably. Because that would just have to be a special trip just for that one isolated matter. That doesnt sound like cooperation to the fbi. And then when they asked up and down the river, they learned that kathryn had been planning to leave brian. The week before she died, go to the county courthouse to get divorce papers. I said, have you tried counselling . And shes like, june, ive done it all. I cant do anymore. I have to get out of this marriage. Big decision and shes made it. She gave me the impression that shed been very systematic about it. She tried many things. None of it worked. So, lots of suspicion. But the fbi simply couldnt prove brian caused kathryns death. By september, brian lawyered up. The investigation stalled. And kathryns family . Dismayed by the lack of progress, they went back to fort ft. Smith and opened their own investigation. Kathryns mom came up. Looked and asked and looked and asked. She went up and down the river, just looking for anything to get information and find out the truth. What did she seem to think had happened . She just said, this doesnt make any sense. She wasnt suicidal. We would put out reward posters or information posters. And we would talk to fishermen. Were you here on this date . Did you see anything . Did you hear anything . We would talk to neighbors. The family expanded their investigation. We hired private investigators, both in dallas and in kansas, and they did interviews with some of her friends from smu. What sorts of things did you find out . That brian and kathryn fought and there was a time where she was afraid of him. And yet she got married to him. She did. Fishing season after fishing season, kathryns sister and mother returned to ft. Smith. Kathryns death, receding further and further into the towns past. We went up there for several years, every summer, and spent a couple of weeks. She tried to find out anything she could at all. Daughter. Months of fruitless investigation turned into years. The more sherry and her family learned, the more convinced they became that brian had a hand in her death, but would never be brought to justice. And so, the business about ralph the dog is kind of like salt in a wound. All this time, brian refused to give or even sell them kathryns beloved jack russell terrier. So after a couple of years, my mom called one day and she said, im im so tired of being nice. I want ralph. And i said, i do, too. She goes, well, then were going to go get ralph. Their private investigator found out where brian was, eight hours away. They made the long drive. My mom saw ralph in the backyard, called his name. Of course, he came immediately. Yeah. Jumped in her arms. And she came running back to the we drove back home to texas. Wow. He was all over us. A few years after kathryns death, the family learned that brian was trying to get licensed to practice law in missouri. So, i immediately called the bar in missouri and said, heres whats going on. Perhaps you dont want to let him sit for the bar exam. He got quite a rough going over by the questioners. He did. They didnt give him his license . No. So brian laird moved to colorado. He set up a law practice in fort ft. Collins, specializing in conflict resolution. In texas, kathryn remained deep in her friend melissas heart. When i found out i was pregnant and when i found out it was a girl, i went to kathryns mom and asked for her permission to name her, to take kathryns danielle, because i loved her so much. I wanted her to always be there with me. In ft. Smith the bighorn flowed on. Fishermen came and went. And fresh crimes demanded investigators attention. Kathryns case grew as cold as the river in winter. And finally in 2004, the fbi closed the file. So as all these years went by, year after year after year, and nothing happened, what was that like for you . Excruciating. Devastating, knowing that he was Walking Around and getting to live his life. After he had taken such an amazing woman off this earth. It was the coldest of cold cases. But i never gave up, ever. Coming up a new investigator pores through the evidence and spots something and i says, wait a minute. Le. And i says, wait a minute. With a round brush head go pro with oralb.
