This is probably one of the worst scenarios when we talk about freezing rain and problems on the roads. What was her description of this, elizabeth . A heartbreaker. For snow lovers. No snow in the triangle. There is no, you know, i lovers lobby out there for sure. Lets take a look at the radar picture. You can see who is taking the precipitation right now. We actually had a break, Warren County, lee county, even parts of Chatham County starting to let up a little bit. Its not completely over but the amounts falling are very light. If lightning up a little bit from durham to raleigh. Still some freezing rain falling up across sampson county, goldsboro, through the i95 court or. We have snow in Roanoke Rapids but almost everybody else seeing freezing rain. In the last frame or two we are starting to see the purple area edging up into Person County and julia sims is up there and says it has all changed over to freezing rain. Freezing rain of course just looks like rain when youre looking out your window but its freezing on the surface is creating very slick conditions. It creates that glaze on your car and trees and power lines. Should not have enough to have widespread power outages, but there certainly could be a few as it could be breezy. And into virginia. Toward salem birds, and right now it looks like it has tapered off for fayetteville and parts of moore county. Heres a look at the radar earlier, a nice band of snow this morning. But rapidly in the triangle a changeover to freezing rain. That freezing rain continuing to lift pushing snow up into virginia. This is what has ensued. This is a look at the raleigh sky cam. You normally be looking at downtown raleigh or western boulevard, but the camera is iced over and so are a lot of bridges right now. Is 23 in raleigh, 25 rocky mount, 27 in fayetteville and clinton. Every go, temperatures are well below freezing. A slick mess out there. Winter storm warning into effect until tomorrow morning the rest of the viewing area has expired down saw that 1 00 or the triangle northward until 7 00 p. M. We are expecting a warm up later today but its going to be after lunchtime before temperatures climb up to freezing. At that point we should have some improvement on the roads. This morning the 20s, 30 at lunchtime and upper 30s later on. Tomorrow morning will be a mess reasons. We will talk more about that in a minute. And, brian, certainly things are getting worse rather than better. On the eastern side of wake county. All of the d. O. T. This morning. Isnt that the way it is . Locally we had somebody on twitter for my jeff gordon from Highway Patrol at 6 30 on wral talk about how conditions were on 264 or 495, whatever you would like to call it, leaving raleigh east. New hope road over 495 or 264, you can see a jammed up in both directions. He says 495 is a parking lot in both directions, and 264 bridges blocks. Raleigh police close it because of ice. Raleigh police close it because of a stock that mistrust. Not surprising. This is 440 westbound from sunnybrook road, you can see the traffic is coming to a standstill there in the distance. A couple of accidents on the side of the road. This is what typically happens on a freezing rain morning. This could be the worst weather that we could see in the morning during winter because rain falls on the car shields, you think, oh, its just rain, but on the bridges, its ice because temperatures are down in the 20s. Way too fast, you could slick and get into some real trouble. This is thra fm 264 or 495 westbound trying to get onto 440 eastbound. That ramp is blocked because of icy conditions and there is a side of the county heading toward raleigh. This is 440, earlier they had opened up the eastbound side, because of a slick bridge overweight avenue, it was closed down for some time. D. O. T. Has been out there and that is one thing that they are focusing on right now, sending salt and sand trucks to start to treat specific spot the bridges. They will be able to get to all of them, but it takes lobby for arrive. Put. That is the bottom line of what were talking about. Getting a report from printer in twitter from sampson county, i40 in newton grove is extremely slick. Starting to get reports of accidents east as we get that freezing rain falling. You can see that on the road weather index. Lets talk about durham. We just heard from the sheriff that they close holzer road at brooch road because of icy i know the wrals arielle clay has been in durham checking out conditions on the western side of the triangle. Where are you now . Right now we are on 15 501 about to make a uturn. We just passed an accident, it looks like a car hit a slick spot, spun out and went into a ditch. So we are going to turn around now and look at the video of that. But before we do that, i want you to take a look as best you can at the roads that we are seeing. Kind of what you guys have been mentioning. You cant really see it, but the roads are very slick out here. Drivers have been taking it slow as best they can, obviously, some still not able to control their vehicles and getting into a little bit of trouble there. Right now, were heading to 15 501 at fall river bridge, thats where weve heard reports of several vehicle accidents. Those cars are not able to control themselves in these conditions. Once we get out there and see back to you, brian. Arielle clay in is live in five on 15501 in durham. She makes a good point. In the last winter storm that we had, we talked about how the soil temperatures were just warm enough that we were not seen too many problems with ice on the surface roads, it was mainly the bridges. But because of cold temperatures, soil temperatures are just above freezing, so as we get this precipitation falling, its able to overcome that relatively warm ground and freeze up a lot more easily than it was a few weeks ago. Of course, this bridges will freeze up quickly with temperatures in the mid20s. Heres a look at the life , you can see all these accidents that have popped up. The red showing up on major roads, indicating those big delays. This is the accident where arielle clay is headed to now in drive 5. Currently, many vehicles involved on this bridge there, weve heard the close portions of 15501 n. Of pittsburgh. Bottom line, stay where you are. Back to you. Thank you, brian. The accidents keep piling up and we do not want to be one of them. Delay travel is possible, and keep it right here. Keep uptodate on the winter storm with the wral weather app which will give you instant forecast, a look at radar, details on watches or warnings or advisories details for our area. All of this is on www. Wral. Com, search alert center. Freezing rain that enough to cause numerous accidents, not bad enough to cause power outages. Our Team Coverage of this ice have the team sp welcome back to our continuing Winter Weather coverage. Here in raleigh, we did not even see snow. We started off with freezing rain around 5 00 this morning the parts to the north did the snow. Roxboro has a reputation of getting snow before anyone else does, but even roxboro has seen the plight of freezing rain this morning. Lets check in with julia sims live from the county seat of Person County. How does a look there, julia . Reporter well, it has pretty much stopped any sort of precipitation. Bill, i was just checking out the snow seeing if i could make a snowball but it is the kind apart. As for the road conditions, you can check it out right here on 501 in north roxboro. You can see that the d. O. T. And public works crews have come through here with their plows, sand and salt trucks and done a really good job of this roadway. You can see a lot of the asphalt. But still, i talked to the Person CountySheriffs Office. And in the last 30 to 45 minutes, they have seen an uptick in the number of car accidents. They said that could be due to more cars on the road, and because we did have a little bit of freezing rain here. So as we have been saying all morning, if youve got to get out on the roads, be smart about it. Take your time, give yourself plenty of distance. And of course, if you dont have to get out, stay home on the couch and enjoy being under that blank and to watching wral. Thats right. Great advice. We are happy to keep you company at home. Slushy roads in roxboro. It is awfully cold, 23 degrees this hour. Slick conditions continue to plague the triangle this morning. Check in with your airline before you head out. And weve been hearing about an accident on 15501 at hall river road in Chatham County. Wrals arielle clay has been slowly making her way towa that area via live drive 5. Are you there, yet . Reporter we just got here. As you said, the bridge on 15 501. And, there are some cars coming out as many as we expected, and im guessing thats because some of them have been cleared away because what youre about to see if there is a tow truck youre sitting on the bridge in the left lane completely blocking that lane. So, the work to clear the it appears that one car is on the back of the tow truck, it looks like it is an suv of some type, a cheap. And then, there also is a ford sedan that also was involved in that back. Further up on the right side of the shoulder, there is a Police Cruiser or sheriffs deputy cruiser, and also another car that appears to have somehow been involved. There was another one that happened here on the bridge. These are just a few of the accidents that we have seen out here this morning on 15501. We saw another to accidents, one, a single car accident, in other, to cars involved in a headon collision. Those accidents have been less than a mile, or about 1 mile apart from each other. As we sat and have been saying all morning, the roads are very slick out here. Looking at it but as i got out to get more information from a Chatham County deputy, i was slipping and sliding around as i was just walking. Again as we always say, be careful if you do decide to head out in the best bet is to just not come at all. Back to you guys. Into the camera makes it appear you are going faster than you are. How fast are you going . Right now we are going 40 miles an hour. Most people are taking it slow as we are. Unfortunately, some are going a little bit faster. Mostly what we have seen this morning is most people are taking it very slow and trying to be careful. The good news is, youre not seeing much additional precipitation at least from our vantage point. As you can see the freezing rain and snow has stopped. We are testing any precipitation right now. It is kind of on and off. Arielle clay in live drive 5 in Chatham County despite what the screen says. Right. Bridge, Chatham County. It looks like the precipitation is letting up but we are not out of the woods, yet. Anything that has fallen onto the roads, frozen over creating icy conditions. D. O. T. Crews are working hard to hit those bad spots with salt and sand. Right now, lets get an update on forecast with elizabeth gardner. Still kind of cold out there. Very cold. Temperatures in the low to mid 20s across the region which is why we are seeing these slick spots. Lets take a look at the radar picture. We have been talking in the last 30 to 45 minutes about the fact that it has started to lighten up a little bit. He will have light amounts of through lunchtime. You may have another band of afternoon. By that point is likely to just be rain. But still there is something falling in a lot of places and you will still have to be careful because of these cold temperatures across the region. We zoom into the triangle, you can see patchy precipitation, seen patchy freezing rain from roxboro over toward henderson. Likely to start seeing that changeover along and east of i 95 from Roanoke Rapids northward coming up shortly. Very light in sandhills right now, very little rainfall. Our picture showing earlier precipitation, it started to lighten up just a little bit but enough has fallen out there conditions. One spot that we dont have a lot of accidents from is the wilson area but still, you need to be very careful. You can expect slick bridges. We have had reports down into fayetteville of slick bridges. A winter storm in effect until person and orange counties until 7 00 a. M. Tomorrow in most of the viewing area under a Winter Weather advisory until 7 00 this evening. Expect temperatures to warm up which will continue to improve the situation. Still at lunchtime, below freezing. 35 at 4 00 and at 8 00, 39. Late tonight and tomorrow morning. More on that coming up in a few minutes. Of course, the immediate problem is the slick bridges and roads. Freezing rain really is the worst as far as travel conditions go. If you have snow and sleet, that is something you can scrape up and pushed to the side of the road. But when you have Something Like this, or you can do is afterthefact go out with a truck and spot treat with sand and salt. Lets show you what the road weather index looks like at 7 35. Dont take it literally, north and east of the triangle would indicate snow but with largely switched over to this freezing rain around the viewing area. Again, those bridges will freeze up very quickly. Because of where soil temperatures are, around 34, 35 degrees and air temperatures in the 20s, surface roads will also freeze quickly. Were getting reports of that. Theres 15501, we saw arielle clay in live drive 5 heading there between chapel hill and pittsboro. Heavy traffic showing up on the sensors. A number of accidents, the seeing on the like a map is leveling off the bed, where nothing the huge increase that we saw during the six clock maybe starting to ease up a function of people staying home, traffic staying put, and maybe also where the d. O. T. Has been able to get out and treat bridges, we may see an improvement at this point. Still stay where you are right morning. We have been telling about the mess on 495 or 264 in eastern wake county, you can see that on the sensors through knightdale. They have opened the ramp on 64 westbound heading toward eastbound on but that is growing traffic, its going to be long time before that gets cleared up. Another area to point out, 95 between dunn and smithfield looking really bad on the road, also newton road, 40 is a mess, and i95 northbound is blocked right now, north of 295 in northern cumberland county. Back to you. Can remember, thank you very much. A little precipitation creates a huge mess. We will stay right here and weather co throughout the hour we have been showing you conditions in the triangle. Lets go up north to roxboro, snow capital of the viewing area and see what julia sims is looking at in roxboro with a look at conditions there. Hello , julia. Reporter good morning, i was looking at the road, take a look at 501 here in roxboro. Traffic out here. So, in the plows have been out clearing the snow off of the roads, the sand and salt trucks have been out, it has been kind of a slushy snow up here. Person county Sheriffs Office reported a handful of accidents about an hour or so ago, and i think thats when we had that freezing rain coming down. Hurt. And for the most part, it looks pretty nice out here. The roads of course can be a little bit tricky, a little bit slick with these conditions, but so far, there have been no serious accidents to report up here in roxboro and Person County. Thats good to hear, and its nice to know that even though the roads look a little messy, it sure is pretty to see that snow on the grass, right . Very picturesque in roxboro. Julia sims, thanks for showing us that scene. Absolutely nothing pretty i would like to have a glazed donut, not a glazed road. When will we get relief . Not until temperatures warm up, probably after lunchtime. One thing that will help is at precipitation is lightening up a little bit. Brian and i were chatting a few minutes ago, and he said we have not seen as many new accidents in the last 30 or 45 minutes, likely due to the fact that precipitation is lightening up. Cant promise that its going to be okay until these temperatures warm up. Right now mid20s, very cold. We take a look at the radar picture, then talk about what we are seeing here. Letter amounts of precipitation then we saw an hour to two hours ago depending on exactly where you are. We will zoom around on the radar and talk about what we are seeing on the triangle. Like and patchy, heavier than from durham right down to raleigh through the airport. But, from apex to Holly Springs to pittsboro, nothing falling at the moment. We are showing some precipitation from roxboro to in with julia sims and she is not seen much of that reaching the ground at the moment. Back over to the east from Roanoke Rapids north on up into virginia, by patchy snow. But the purple areas of course are where we are seeing that precipitation starting to move up to more freezing rain than anything. And then of course downtown down south fayetteville, referred to park apartment county, very little of that song at the moment. Heres a look at the Bigger Picture of the radar. You can see earlier this morning, we had a nice band that laid down some snow. Up to the north, that has tapered off a good bit. You can see how that has changed over in the purple areas, where we are looking at freezing rain and really a lot of that. As we thought that changeover to freezing rain, heavier precipitation has moved up into virginia. You can see how light and patchy it is from goldsboro, over to fayetteville and into moore county, too. Cameras really showing what happened. We have the beltline at six forks, traffic rolling, most likely from this slick bridge up here. Just realized that no matter where you are you will run into slippery spots on bridges and surface roads. Thats something you dont want to do. I was pointing that out earlier. I guess in some places, you just want to be really careful, keep yourselves far away from the road if you do get into an accident. Its 23 degrees, northeast wind that 6 miles per hour. Feels the teens with the windchill, dewpoint is 19. Messy out there. 23 in roxboro, 20 south hill, 25 in rocky mount and wilson. 26 sanford, 27 in Southern Pines and fayetteville. The only reason were not hearing about more accidents down south because the precipitation amounthave been lighter. It has been heavier from the triangle area northward. So there is more of a coating of ice. No matter where you are, you have a potential for slick conditions, anything that looks wet is going to be slippery out what are we talking about . Difference between sleet and freezing rain and snow, of course, we saw a big band north of the triangle as a slow snow this morning. Temperatures were cold enough to the atmosphere. It was nice to start as the snow. But we had warm air coming in which is more poignant than cold air so it rises up above it. As the snow falls into this warm air, it melts and becomes a raindrop. Thant melts into this cold player and if it is deep enough, it forms sweet, which is the ice ball. In this case, we have actually had more warm air. So that raindrop has not had time to freeze until it hits the surface and creates that icy glaze which is creating that huge mess out there right now. We are expecting temperatures everything to bring this afternoon. Meteorologist mike moss is in with me this money took talk about what happens after that. Thanks a lot. I thought we would start off with a quick look at live dual you talked about how the radar trends are out there this morning but weve got a couple of reports over the last 12 hours or so where we did have the snow in more Northern Areas during the evening last night. For example, northwestern orange county, we had 1. 32 1. 5 inches of snow that happened during the evening hours. There were some other areas up around roxboro of course. We saw reports of about 1. 8 inches of snow late last evening. Of course after that further to the south and into the Morning Hours around the raleigh area, we had freezing rain kick in around 5 00 to 6 30 this morning. Numerous accidents associated with that and similar reports to the southeast from greenville down to around bladen county. We have seen some of those areas with light glazing in spots that have led to some accidents. That can continue to be a problem, although we are starting to see as you mentioned some of the precipitation lighten up a little bit from the south and west. Heres a look at what weve got over the last 24 hours, on the radar. Of course, you can see the trend in general has been for most of the heavier precipitation to be across northern north carolina. Right now, were getting redevelopment from the southwest as well. That may continue off and on during the day today but probably pretty patchy precipitation in the south for us. The transition line has come to the north and is likely to continue on to the north because of High Pressure that instead of being locked up in the northeastern United States and eastern canada, pushing cold flow that will air over here, it is slipping off to the east. And as we go through the day, he will get more to a southeasterly and tonight, southerly wind flow. All of that will interact with a frontal boundary off to the south and west, and low pressure pushing up toward north carolina, as this front moves toward the north and northwest through the course of the day. Places seeing freezing rain this morning or snow in the north are like to change, mainly over to rain. We take a look at future cast, you can see as we go through the morning and into the afternoon hours, we get into southeast by early afternoon. Low 30s off to the north and west and as we go to the nighttime hours, our temperatures really rising to the 50s by tomorrow morning. Tomorrow, looking at 50s to around 60, entering the day tomorrow, precipitation band of showers will be moving out to the east. Thank you. Storm with the wral weather app that will give you instant access to the forecast, look at radar, and details on any watches, warnings or advisories issued for the area. We want to let you know just into the newsroom, Johnson County schools will be close. They were on a two hour delay that have just made the decision to close because of changing weather conditions. The cause of the weather, 70 flights at rdu international, be sure to call ahead to the airport. Mikaya thurmond is in live drive 5. She is next as our Winter Weather coverage he dangerous icy conditions were looking at a really road east raleigh. A number of accidents. Slippery out there. This shows that icy glaze can create his problems. We are working to get more information, but this is a live look at what looks to be a Chain Reaction crash here, a lot of slip and slide and some collisions there on poole road in raleigh, we also saw a Police Officer there, on the scene. He was in the car and he was slowly making its way down the hill, too. At least three vehicles right, the white vehicle. And another to be still on poole road smashed up. And, two different crashes, we understand. And it looks like there is somebody being assisted, who was involved in this accident. But again, this is just another example of just how bad it is out there. And its good to have the Raleigh Police assisting. We will keep an eye on the situation out on poole road in raleigh. But just another example, folks, this glaze is a menace out there. Thats right. Our best advice, please stay at home and delay or travel as much as possible.
