Wral. Com. The good thing, elizabeth, is the weather will be nice. Oh, well have elizabeth in just a moment. Two communities are on edge, worried about water levels and the potential it catastrophic flooding. A voluntary evacuation is in effect fo downstream. Wrals bryan mims is live in moore county with more, and i understand that the area is completely on edge, bryan. Reporter yes. There are rattled nerves. Im along highway 690 that runs on to springlake and fort bragg. It is closed as you can tell from the cones behind me. And i noticed that the moore county fire Marshal Brian few other officials. They are about to go out to the dam to meet with safety engineers to see where things stand. But as you mentioned, houses along 690 have been evacuated as well as those in spring lake along the lower little river. Let me show you video from last night of the evacuation. The Moore County Public Safety Department said that a breach of the dam is, quote, highly likely but we are stressing occurred. And an official told the pilot newspaper that a small motion of the dam washed away and workers were mitigating it, and a breach remained a likelihood. Evacuees said that fire trucks went to their homes with someone on the loud speaker urging them to get out. We spoke with a woman who was outside her house when a fire my 11yearold was outside with me and she started shaking and was in tears. It scared all of us, and our neighbor, shes pregnant, really upset. Everyone jumped from their vehicles and grabbed our kids and ran to the dollar general. Mother nature is mother nature. Just be smart. When they say go, go. Reporter and something to note it was one of the largest high hazard dams in the state that received a poor rating from regulators. There were cracks in the concrete spillway and water seening seeping out of the earthen shore. E fire the scene and on his way out to the dam to meet with the engineers. We hope in the next little while well have an update on are told to stay away from the dam and little river. Lena and renee . Today will be the moment of truth for the folks in moore county. Thank you, bryan. The residents in princeville are on high alert. The tar river is expected to crest at 10 00. This isnt the first time they had to go through this. Julia sims is joins us live along the tar river neighboring tarboro. Julia . And apologize. Looks like were having audio issues. Well get back to that. Floodwaters have forced left hands to evacuate in Robeson County when a levee near lumberton broke. That levee is Still Holding but getting around it. There is concern that history will repeat itself from hurricane floyd even though the dam was rebuilt and reinforced and now, the call is out for donations and supplies. Of sun there, and the good news is we will get to see a good stretch of the nice weather for all the folks trying to clean up from the devastating flooding. I am sure they are enjoying this, elizabeth. I cant imagine if i had to stand and say we ha coming. Im glad thats not in the forecast. Extended period, looking into next week with no chance for rain. Everything is moving along here. Avent ferry and western boulevard here and brian will talk about places you cant get down the road because its washed out and a Flood Warning for eastern counties including wake county not for rain coming but for the continued flooding that is happening across the area. Brian shrader will talk about the closed roads. Yes, and we have the typicalled it morning commute worries, 40 eastbound is slow leaving chapel hill. Freeway. Earlier, 54 was a good alternate route but now that were seeing the delays easing on 40 eastbound, thats your best option, easing up on the south side of durham. Again, it appears to be sun glare, no accidents causing the problems. We had a report of an accident 40 westbound at lake wheeler contributing to the delays in the south side of raleigh up to west raleigh. 440 to wade, the 27 minutes. The good news is beyond that heading out to the airport and rtp, its 6 minutes. Lets talk about the situation with closed roads throughout central and eastern North Carolina. These icons indicate roads blocked due to flooding or washed out or trees down or other kinds of damage. Not just secondary roads but leave newton grove towards sampson. Signals are out and treat those intersections as allway stops. Many roads are closed, secondary and major roads and heavy traffic in town as people are trying to find alternates. And dont ignore the barriers even if they look dry. The d. O. T. Has to inspect them. Lena. Thank you, brian. To crest. And people are bracing for the possibility of crippling floods. Julia sims is joining us from the neighboring town of tarboro. Julia, hope we can hear you now. Reporter yeah. It helps to turn on the mic, doesnt it . Listen. Seriously, renee, the tar river has been inching up and is expected to crest about 35 feet, and the dike is at 37 feet. A lot of people are collectively holding their breath. 17 years ago, the memories of devastation of floyd is fresh. The whole town was swallowed in the floodwaters and they rebuilt but with matthew, well, you in 1999, we lost everything but our lives and this is round 2. Reporter i cant even imagine what the folks are going through. A lot of folks are keeping an eye on this river, and its expected to crest at 10 00 this morning. Well see how it plays out this morning, julia sims. Thank you. The impact of Hurricane Matthew is widespread and many where the boil water orders are cked me in a parking tried to stab me with an 8inch knife. But i carry a pistol. I fight back. Its been really incredible learn how rivers can crest at different points and the impact it can have on communities. Absolute we. We have river basins and the water starts at 1 spot and then rises and drops and moves on to the next place. Its a science that you are able to track. And thats where were headed first. All morning, we have been basins. Lets head over to the tar river in pamplico river basin. Typically, you have several different rivers in it, and one is the largest, will pamplico, and the tar runs through that, and rocky mount, the river has crested there, but they are likely to stay at flood stage through friday and it may be that conditions continue to improve, and then to tarboro where it l today and, of course, a lot of that high water moves down to greenville and eventually in the pamplico sound. Lets talk about the water level at tarboro and princeville. Everyone who remembers hurricane floyd remembers that princeville went underwater. So they built a dike to hold the water back and in looks like in this case it may work. Minor flooding, 19 feet, Riverside Park floods and major currently, at 32. 28. So we are just in the major flood. Its not likely going to be a record flood, and the crest may be up around 35. I would drop it down to 33 33 because it looks like the river has flattened out and may not climb to 35. 37 is when the river top the levee or dike and flood princeville. It may be that everything will be okay in princeville st be safe, down there to talk about whats happening there in tarboro but even at this rrent level we have streets flooding and princeville on the other hand is fine with flooding on the west side but the city of princeville should be okay. And, of course, they have evacuated the town just to be sure. Looking at nice weather, fortunately, no rain coming our way. The rdu skycam, nice and sunny, the coldest morning so far this season for many parts of the viewing area. The dew point, 44 and 41 in roxboro and it dropped down to 37 this morning and 49 in fayetteville and 46 in rocky mount and wilson. No further evacuations are planned and detail updates will be coming from spring lane and moore county about the situation, what kind of risk there is at the dam. But lets sw you video from last night of the evacuation. Officials are urging people to get out because a dam breach spwith a number of evacuees.
