It is 29 in rocky mount and and fayetteville. That means the chance of working mission is certainly dimensioning there in Southern Pines is 28 and 27 in roxboro. The best thing we can hope for freezing rain. We are seeing some sleet along the triangle area and that will keep down our transfer an ice storm. We are still expecting to thing from a quarter to a half an inch of ice toward sanford and Southern Pines. We are still expecting Power Outages to develop this afternoon as the precipitation continues. We also have the Winter Weather advisory in effect of the way through tomorrow in the eastern part of the viewing area. Temperatures are beginning to come up which is good news. Roads with them looking bad, do you see accidents . Reporter thankfully we are seeing few traffic today. Although we are seeing some crashes on major routes. Right now i want to show you a picture the d. O. T. Treated south of angier and lillington. Look at the stock power poll. The ice is really starting to hang on the power lines and some low hanging power lines as the precipitation continues to fall the freezing rain contributes to those tree limbs and we will likely see more Power Outages and more falling trees. Which have some good news for you injure him. This is 85 and guess road. The fed ex tractortrailer has been cleared up with traffic now wide open and flowing freely over guess road still covered with snow and ice. Over on the other side of during this is i40 at davis drive we have the westside partially blocked with a there. When you go for over a bridge people are thinking the roads are in good shape because on the surface roads it looks just went wet. They spin out on the slick bridge and end up on the other side. Also they hit the side of the road and the median and they lose control. Thankfully we havent heard about any serious injuries in the trial triangle area itself. But it underscores the effort to stay put where we are. Snow and ice are still covering the interstate at i85 and the father north and west you go the worst the conditions are. Storms within one county wake county. We still see snow and ice covering roads. The Southern Side of wake county hasnt been so bad. We have had more of the freezing rain following falling. Is take your up to vance county which is still blocked at both directions with this overturned tanker. We appreciate freds telling her helping this tanker i85. Is causing some big delays in advance county. We have had relatively few accidents showing appear on the map which is a testament that people are staying put as you need to do. Back to you. We are not even close to being done this. Thank you. The governor mentioned this 2. 5 hours ago, there have been four deaths related to the storm. The latest today was one person accident wednesday on i95 in kinley this morning kenly this morning it was terrible. Amanda lamb is along the belt line in raleigh. Company. Reporter right now is pretty quiet, david. We just traveled to Johnston County and back to wilson. When you are over in that area in Johnston County and wilson there is there is little visible on the roads whereas here in wake county you can see there is slash and remnants of snow on the side of the road. It is definitely visual here. But that did has some problems like you said that fatal accident in Johnston County for drivers because it didnt look here in wake county we are experiencing what we saw throughout the morning. Just really a slushy icy mess. It goes from sleet to freezing rain and its just doesnt seem to be letting up. It definitely doesnt se gting any warmer. All the drivers impacted said they didnt realize that the roads were as slippery as they are. People just need to be cautious if they are out. Amanda, are you seeing any d. O. T. Crews spreading sand . Reporter we did follow some of their crews out and they have retreated the roads. They are concentrating on the main road and so what you are going to find his that it is secondary roads are really difficult to traverse in some areas. This morning and this is the best of the best. When you get off to the some of these secondary roads it is not so good. They are concentrating on the main roads. Amanda lamb, thank you. Did you have trouble getting her . I didnt. But i wasnt staying very highway and the roads were looking very slushy. I lived about 4. 5 miles from here and fortunately because there was so few cars on the road i had no trouble whatsoever taking it exceedingly easy and you realize more than any other time of the year how flat raleigh is not. Yes. Even the little hill. Very slushy out there. I was surprised to see as many cars as i did. Staying indoors. Because it really is starting to pile up now. All right. We are going to wrals julia sims who is joining us. Reporter david, you guys were talking about the roads. The roads in raleigh looked pretty decent right now at least the main ones. But they are not clear by a long shot. The city of raleigh has the public corkscrew out with 1100 road miles they have to clear so we have two dozen trucks out there clearing these roads. But there is still a lot of slash and slippery areas you depicting people are concerned about now in raleigh is ice. We have seen a lot of the tree leaves start to glaze over and of course a coating of thin ice we are seeing starting to form on some of the limbs. Comes to power lines if they snap and fall on those lines. That is a big concern for a lot of older assemblage treelined neighborhoods like historic oakwood. But i think we have found that most people are just trying to make the most of this situation today. And again, the roads seem to be in pretty good shape right now. But as amended talked about, they can be deceiving. I saw a couple of folks really run their engines coming around a quarter and the hit the pile of slash and those wheels were spinning. So you really have to be careful. Julia sims reporting live in downtown raleigh. Thank you. It is very story in roxboro and bryan mims is monitoring the conditions. Bryan . Reporter debra , this is a great place to monitor the much bad news to report from this end of the area. We have snow on the ground with 3 inches and county and this is us501 in roxboro. The d. O. T. Trucks have come through here on a regular basis try to keep the roads clear. Have seen like a bit of traffic which has quieted down now that we are on live television, but a couple of minutes ago there was a good bit of traffic going through here with a lot of pickup trucks. Lots of 4 x 4s going bike with some people taking to cruising to pass the time. I see some traffic going by their almost abnormal be there almost abnormal speeds. I just called the Emergency CommunicationsManagement Department and i was told there have been no accidents in the county this morning which is there are lots of tulane backroads and there have not been any accidents in the county that are weatherrelated. We will hope that keeps up as the afternoon goes on. Very nice to just sit back and look out the wind and enjoy the snow and have a little bit of snow falling down mixed with some sleet. It really is pretty here. The snow capital of our viewing area. It is nice to just look out the window and stand in it too. And the difference driving up there in the snow versus the ice here in the triangle. Bryan mims, thank you so much. If you are getting stir crazy and you enjoy hockey the hurricanes are playing the game tonight against the rangers at 7 00. If you cannot make it to the ticket exchange. If you decide you want to its a 7 00. The team got back at 4 a. M. With exciting overtime. I know they are ready to play again tonight. Bryan was talk about the Person County being accident free in roxboro. From durham they had 18 accidents since midnight last night. As Brian Shrader said so few people are on the road the numbers of accidents are not as bad as weve seen in the past. On the airport. Welcome back to coverage of this latest blast of winter. I am David Crabtree along with debra morgan. This is affecting people all along the east coast. The snow really start to fall as we go into the washington dc area. Is creating problems for traffic at the airport. Yes i was on the last flight from new york to make it in last night. We were delayed and flights were oversold. People wanted to get home and nobody wanted to give up the seat. But there are a few lights flights going in and out today. We the latest on how the flights are moving. Sloane . Reporter david, you were lucky to get in last night we are standing right behind the delta counter and you can see the folks are lined up waiting to see if they can get on a flight. We also have a couple that is sitting here from charlotte. They drove here because their daughter was scheduled to get on a flight to new york and they could not get her out of new york so they came here and there waiting to make sure the flight takes off. These two women are here from new york and they were here for business in the triangle. Already had one flight canceled and they are hoping the next flight takes off more than 400 flights in and out of rdu have been canceled so far. Delta airlines and a legion are the only airlines operating today if u have a flight scheduled it is best to check with your airlines first. Big airlines like southwest do a lot of business here. They have announced they will not begin their flights again a lots of uncertainties and frustrations out here. But people seem to be taking it pretty well. Back to you. Thank you. Wrals gilbert phase has been out there. Reporter david, the news doesnt have to be that. We are actually reporting the conditions of the different areas which we been doing all morning. I wish i could tell you we have mountain of snow, but that is just not the case. You can see there is ice chelated on this rail here. If the temperature right now would be below freezing this should be coming down here gangbusters now or at least sleet that it is a mixture of some ice and rain. The precipitation is coming down. I did talk to the airport to get an update. There was a flight from delta delta is still iffy. There may be some flights that come in later tonight. They will see what will happen there. United has thrown in the towel today and tomorrow. American certainly towel early today and they are iffy about tomorrow. The best advice is make a call before you head down to see if you will be able to get out. The flights that are supposed to be going out with united had up to the dc area which is swamped. That is what that airline is shut down. Have some rain, you can make it around if you take your time and go easy. Pack your patient patience. Gilbert baez reporting live. We knew this was coming so you can begin to prepare as best you can. Some people i know how to work. So i think there are very few people on the roads. And First Responders in so thankful for them. There whether they are patrol officers or others people directing traffic have to be out in this for expended periods of time. You are so grateful for that. But it is their job. That. Lets take another check on the roads with arielle clay. We are you exactly, arielle . Reporter were headed toward 40. We have been told there is an accident involving a tractor trailer. Is one of several accidents we have seen throughout the day and throughout the morning here in durham. The police announced they had responded to 18 accidents with most of those single vehicle accidents. They are people that just lost control on the roadways. This morning with a lot of these roadways being slushy at this point. Apparently not causing trouble for most of drivers. As a mention, some people are spinning out and losing control. Earlier today we saw near the cornwallis exit a small car lost control and went into a snow plow. That accident was quickly clean up. That is actually what we have seen here. By the time we get here they are already cleaned up and out of the way. The Response Time has been very fast interim. In durham. We are on our way and we let you know what we see when we get there. On a normal friday afternoon that road would be pack. Arielle clay live. It is friday afternoon. The time just compresses so much. It does. What a great time to remind elizabeth was with us. I just was gone and i wondered what the temperature was like so i looked and i could see. What a tremendous aid to have at any time. And it is free especially since we have Power Outages you can follow along if you have that app. We have a weather up and a weather alert at app. Even if the power goes out. And that is a big concern, right . The fortunate thing so far is we have seen intermixing with sleet in a good bit of the region. Right now we are mixing with sleet and freezing rain around the trial. I was just seeing what to a the amounts are. 2 inches of sleet down and Southern Pines. That is a great thing because freezing rain with more Power Outages. If we can just keep the sleet for several more hours, we may be able to skate by without reaching that quarter inch criteria. Lets take a look. Over the next several hours are biggest impact still is likely to be the ice storm potential. It is almost 1 30 pm. We have made it this far with only a 10th of an inch of accumulation out there in terms of the ice. That is a really good thing. If we can continue the sleet we will be in better shape. It certainly looks like we wont warm the layers of the atmosphere even more which means that will change even more spots over to freezing rain. Sleet and freezing rain for the rest of the afternoon even if it license up where you are, expect it to continue to develop. We will not see this pending until tonight at 8 00 or 9 00. We may still have some light shouldnt have much additional accumulation. There is roxboro which continues to be beautiful. Weve had 2 inch and 3 reports. One was 4. 5 inches. Weve also seen it mixing with some freezing rain and sleet because he can see it on the camera lens. We continue to have this steady flow coming up from the south and is will be with us for the remainder of the day today. Here is our Durham Skycam which looks slippery. Brian will be talking about that coming up. It is 30 in rocky mount and 27 in trouble here. Family. They want to see these temperatures continue to climb. We do still have this whole band we have to deal with. This is going to be moving across the area and then add here that rolls through into the evening and begins to deeper things off. Wraparound snow for saturday. Here is 5 00 are we still have the wintry mix point on and a better chance of freezing rain at 5 00. At 7 00 we start to see more rain developing to the south and then it tapers off at 8 00 or 9 00 or 10 00 depending on where you are. Saturday morning brings snow showers up near the virginia line but they could see it as far south as the triangle. It may be with us for a good chunk of the day saturday. I still dont think we will have additional accumulation at about. A concern for the afternoon is the icing. A quarter of an inch and a half inch from south hill all the way back down almost the highway one one quarter. Temperatures climbing up to 32 this afternoon and eventually climbing this evening and dropping again saturday. Let me show you that one more time. The snowfall potential for saturday is not a lot of we certainly have that chance and brian and i will be here bright and early tomorrow morning to talk more about that with you. This is the accident arielle was talking about. 40 eastbound highway 55. You can see is another one of these accidents that involves a tractortrailer and it is blocking all but one lane on the eastbound side of i40. D. O. T. Crews are on the scene and he will notice this is a bridge over 55. Probably 70 of the accidents we have seen so far this morning have happened where we have a bridge. People are on the slashing or wet roads and they think this is all right and i can travel the speed limit or about. Then they hit this bridge and go spinning. This is just a good reminder if extra careful around for just. There is a similar situation around davis where the westbound lanes are partially block. In durham one of our followers sent us this picture. These are conditions on miami and page. They are an awful shape and afternoon. Hed heed the message to stay put to the rest of the afternoon into the evening. Afternoon with a complete update at 4 00 on wral news. Thank you. A couple of announcements to make regarding the s. A. T. S. They have been canceled this weekend and then wake tech also canceling classes. Back we are going to have another cut in at 3 00. We will go back to regular programming for now but at 3 00 will be back on the air and then a 4 00 our wral news normally will if you are a fan of the young and the restless it will air is entirely at 1 37 pm morning. Suprem [ seagulls calling ] steffy im not coming. [ sobs ]
