And we will also have coverage in washington dc. We have hundreds of closings reported. We also have those scrolling at the bottom of our screen. Now lets go to greg he. We have good news and bad news. The good news is the precipitation is winding down, at least for the time being. The bad news is the colder air is coming down. 26 now. Still 33 in fayetteville but you are going to be swinging toward the 20s. And cape hatteras, 56 56 degrees still but those temperatures will be coming down. Wind gusting up near 40. Winds still gusting to 21 and 22 at raleigh and fayetteville. So with ice on the power lines, even if nothing else is coming down that still has the imagery. Stuff. Tomorrow morning the atmosphere will be cold enough for snow and you can see that reflected here in our radar forecast. Not much going on for the next few hours but tomorrow morning it will be cold enough for the precipitation to be in the form of light flurries and there could be some light accumulations. But the fact remains we probably will see more winter tomorrow. Well have more on this crazy weather system and update you on whats going on up north, all that coming up in just a minute. Greg, thank you, as greg mentioned the ice is bringing down trees and power lines. 123,000 across the state without power at this hour. Total, number 42,000 people in the dark. Ice, of course is an issue in raleigh. Ken smith continues our live coverage. Ken, would you think conditions are getting worse or better . Well, we have been around the wa coty area for the most part major roads, things are getting a little better on the problem, secondary roads. Some parts have been without power for several hours here. Right there, thats the culprit. Ice accumulating on these power lines. Thats really the problem and heres Something Else that can happen when ice builds up on power lines. This is the scene on where a tree limb came crashing down on top of a transit bus. The tree limb got lodged in the windshield wiper. No one got hurt. Crews arrived and removed the trees started falling around the try triangle. One neighbor said it sounded like fire crackers. Again, no one was hurt but the falling tree did damage part of a fence and came dangerously close to some nearby homes. A short time later we got another call about a tree falling on centennial campus. Not far from centennial parkway. It appears the weight of the ice on the limbs uprooted this tree. But you can see the tree fell in the woods. Now, beyond the tree, the other concerns tonight, secondary roads in and around the triangle. Crews have been out all night putting down that salt to help drivers with traction. From what we have been able to roads. Traffic is relatively light, especially for a friday night. Most people we talked with, they were opting to walk to their destination rather than driving. Were in the 5 point area. Ways in raleigh. You can see it is driveable. A lot of that salt has been kicked up. But the main concern really will be those secondary roads, particularly those roads in neighborhoods. Now it bears repeating, if you have to be out take it very slowly but if you dont have to be out on these road ways, particularly early tomorrow morning, be careful and stay off these roads. Live in raleigh, thank you. Drivers were stranded for hours on i40 in Johnson County. Candace sweat joins us live with details of 2 accidents, other. Candace. Gerald, about half a mile from where we are standing now i40 was a complete mess for several hours today. As we heard throughout our newscast already, ice was really the culprit of a lot of problems people had today and out here it was no different. Just before 7 00, in fact, a deputy who was sitting inside of his cruiser was hit by a suspected drunk driver. If you want to take a look at this video from earlier today. I have confirmed with sheriff with the Johnson CountySheriffs Office that k9 Deputy Matthew johnson was on i40. He was diverting traffic for another issue with power lines down. He said that his dog pin to and the sheriff, or the deputy got back into their car and about 30 seconds later a suspected drunk driver hit them on the passenger side. He spun out of control. He was taken to a nearby to be released soon. As for that male driver, he is currently in custody. Well bring you details about that as they become available. And johnsons dog pin to is doing just fine. Take a look at this video. Deputy johnson was helping with this incident before his car was hit on i40. Power lines were down holding up traffic in both directions. Officials say they are not 100 sure what caused those power lines to go down but ice has been a big problem. We actually spoke with a couple of friends out in this traffic and said they were trying to get to the canes game. I dont want to get a reckless driving ticket by turning around on the highway so i think were sticking it out but i think well get food. Maybe show up to the game a little late. By the way he said he was he actually did not stick it out. As soon as we conducted that interview he turned his car around and went the other way and we actually noticed a lot of drivers doing that just not wanting to sit in traffic any longer. Is cement like people are not it seems like people are not catching a break out here. Thank you, candace. As we told you earlier, thousands of customers without power tonight. At last check more than 5000 people still without power. Our crews caught up with a family trying to make it through the night with a 5 week old baby. We made it back to get some candles. So we have heat in the house. The crews are still assessing damage tonight so the number of people without power actually could be higher. The state Highway Patrol reports nearly 1300 collisions from midnight to 7 00 p. M. We know of 4 traffic related deaths since this weather became a factor, one of them in Johnson County this morning. Troopers say a pickup truck hit a jackknifed semi. For much of the day it seemed we really dodged a bullet with this storm mainly bringing rain. There is concern that those wet roads could freeze overnight. Adam. Gerald, compared to the reports we have seen from our other crews, we are in good shape. We saw rainfall earlier in the evening but that does cause other problems. Trees and those branches out here that could not handle that, they broke and fell to the ground. At times that cut elect electricity to thousands of customers. You could hear the limbs breaking. We do have more ingredients for more concerns. Its quite wet around here. If it gets cold enough we could see more issues. The roads look okay for the most part. Still, take it easy out there. Our crews will be monitoring conditions throughout the night. For complete coverage on the conditions along with our team of reporters in the field. Still to come tonight, the winter storm hitting here is significantly more to the north of us. Sandsy is a high benchmark but the kind of winds and coastal flooding they could have, its probably not going to damage a lot of structures but they could have flooding up there. Full moon at the same time. They are not getting a break. Exactly. Thats going to go on for a while. If you look back to the west you can see the first echos just to the west of moore county. I believe thats out around briscoe. So that activity is already beginning to swing eastward. So it looks like we will begin activity as we head to morning. The numbers at the airport now 26 degrees. It was up close to the freezing mark earlier, certainly not more and with the wind becoming more north and northwesterly those temperatures will come down even more. As we take a look now at the temperatures around the area, again, these are current temperatures. It is still 62 at hatter us with winds gusting to 40. Continuing to intensify. Its not moving very quickly and that that doesnt bode well for the folks up north. The dark greens indicate where the moisture is the deepest so we put this into motion and you will notice that the dark green starts to come back over us so were going to be in that wrap around area. Part of the afternoon you can see the moisture starts to military in and come filter in. The good news is that by the time we get to sunday morning finally the storm makes a definitive move and we enjoy a full compliment of temperatures on sunday. We think they will get milder. Heres the radar projection. Here comes the activity from the west giving us a chance of light snow and flurries tomorrow. So for the rest of tonight windy and cold. A chance of some flurries redeveloping by morning. Tomorrow, cloudy, windsy, cold with temperatures only getting up to around the freezing mark. But huge improvements as we head toward sundays. Lots of sunshine and 40. And for the panthers game and next week more in the way of cloud cover and milder and there may be some rain to deal with but we havent really focused a whole lot of attention on that.
