We are tracking it for you. Weve got you covered everything you need to know from the timeline on the freezing rain and snow, to some terrible conditions on the roads. Good morning, everybody, im bill leslie. And im renee chou. We were hoping for snow, but ended up with this nasty, problematic freezing rain. Elizabeth gardner is tracking the storms path right now and Brian Shrader has an overview of the traffic and the potential icy spots to look out for. Bryan will be talking live with the highway patrol. We have crews in live drive five giving us firsthand look at the crews and julia is live in rockboro. If anywhere saw a picture perfect post card it was roxboro, but they now even have that nasty freezing rain. Before we get to elizabeth, great call by a number of School Districts to close or delay school. Wake county schools closed today. Also on that list we have chapel hill, carboro closed, Chatham County, and clinton city schools delayed by two hours, durham Public Schools cleared, edge comb county schools are close edgecombe. And hoke county schools, and and lee county, mecklenburg county, moore county, North Hampton county, and Orange County schools are closed. Warren county schools also closed and twohour delay for wayne county schools. Wilson county schools are also closed. You can find the information scrolling on the bottom of your screen, and on the web site as delays. What a nasty morning. What a mess we already have this morning with all of that freezing rain. Its at. Thats right. When you look out the door youre going to think its just raining because freezing rain is a liquid raindrop, but our temperatures are below freezing. Well below freezing. Mid20 in most places so here on the ground temperatures are in the mid20s and freezes into that icy glaze. It really has a big impact on bridges and wait until you see all the accidents bryan has to show you. One good piece of information is its beginning to dry out a little bit back to the south and coming from the westsouthwest, so we may get to see this lightning up a little bit as this begins to shift a little bit farther to the east and northeast. Some of this is redeveloping from fayetteville up the i95 corridor, but still we may lighten up this a little bit and not have some of that heavier amounts of precipitation going on. Maybe in another 30 minutes to an hour, depending on where you are. You might start to see it lightning up a little bit. Its still coming down fairly moderately from durham, to raleigh, to chapel hill. From time to time, you might see it mix with some sleet, but it looks like for the most part, the snow is over, the showing blue, around oxford, henderson and it looks like down on the ground its the freezing rain. Radars picking up whats going on in some of the higher levels of the atmosphere, but by the time its hitting the surface this is all rain. Along the i95 corridor, and that brute blight band that rolled through this morning, about 4 305 00 d produce some snow briefly and that quickly changed over to sleet and freezing rain and now mostly rain. And from Southern Pines west ford, you can see that breakn the precipitation, so may lift northward. Still pretty steady around the virginia line, but we may see some things tapering off especially southward. Havent had a lot of reports of accidents, but expect conditions on bridges everywhere, and rocky mount and wilson, it is 25 degrees right now. 27 in erwin, goldsboro, and clinton, and 28 in roxboro. The winter storm warning extents out until tomorrow morning at 7 a. M. For both Orange County and person counties for some continued slick conditions, and it does look like well have some warming later today, which should improve the situation a bit. Lunchtime, pretty slippery, but warming into the upper 30 this is afternoon, when winter becomes rain. Well talk about that and what happens tomorrow in a few minutes. Well head over to bryan who is seeing a number of accidents. A lot of ground to cover this morning. The bottom line is if youre in raleigh, and its a bridge, assume its slick. Were getting a lot of reports people say its like skating rinks. I40 at u. S. 1 in cary and on the other side of that i40 bridge weve had a number of vehicles spinning out. You can see people standing around. Well talk about that if in just a moment with lieutenant jeff gordon with the state highway patrol. And on the eastern side of wake county, the bridge has closed that ramp from 264 westbound on to four ford eastbound this morning create something pretty big backups from knight dale on the bypass and 440 remains closed before you get to wade avenue before you get to an accident on the other side of that bridge. Suslieutenant gordon with the state highway patrol, and what are joining usa lieutenant gordon. What are people seeing . Our call volume has went up substantially just as you have reported. Were seeing multiple, multiple wrecks to the point where were basically backlogged. One of the areas that were really having an issue with is up on u. S. 64 east, going up towards the kind dale, winddale, area. 440 is a big issue, as well as raleigh pd, and just as you said, those overpasses and bridges people are coming across hitting the brakes, losing control, and there was one piece, i might kind of touch on, that you mentioned here, but a lot of times when people get involved in a collision, the first thing to do is get out and look at the vehicle. Do that. What you could have is other vehicles careen out of control and strike individuals. If youre in that situation, try to get as far away from vehicles as possible, some first away until First Responders can get there, mark the road clearly, increase in crashes, which leads to my final piece, bryan if you dont. The next couple hours at least until lunch, its going to be touch and go. We dont anticipate this getting any better until the temperatures rise. All right, lieutenant gordon, we appreciate that and hope all the troopers are here this morning. If thats not enough to convince you, take a look at all of those accidents popping up. Stay put if you can. Back to you. The proof is there, bryan, thank you so much. Here in raleigh weve only seen freezing rain but counties to the north did see snow this morning including Person County home to the snow capitol of our viewing area. Wrals julia swims is live in is live where conditions have gotten worse, in terms of the precipitation, julia. We had some freezing rain for a little bit, bill, but things are tapering off. I did talk to the Person County Sheriffs Office and they said in the last 15 to 20 minutes, theyve gotten numerous reports of Car Accidents out on the roads. Fortunately, theyve said there are no reports of any injuries but of course that to be due to the slick roads, and more cars are getting out on the roads i the last halfhour or so. You can see that 501 here in roxboro is covered with snow. D. Ot. Has been out throughout the night and into the Morning Hours with the sand and salt trucks and the plows trying to push this stuff off the road, but like lieutenant gordon said if you can stay off the roads and stay at home that is the best thing to do if you have to get out. Give yourself plenty of time and of course plenty of room to all right, julia live in roxboro, thank you very much, and weve got much more coverage straight ahead. Thats right. Live drive five shows ug what thinks are looking like in wake county. It is 6 41, and phrasing rain is causing a lot of accidents this morning. Very slick conditions. Its 27 in benson, 25 in rocketsy mount, 23 in 25 in rocky mount, and 23 in 37 in benson. And by 5 00 temperatures have made it above freezing. By midafternoon and we should see some improving conditions on the road. Right now there are a lot accidents you need to be especially care of, or just stay at home. Thank you very much, elizabeth. Elizabeth talked about all of those accidents. Were seeing a number of them and well check. A dangerous glaze of ice on bridge in the triangle is causing some traffic nightmares this morning. Mikaya thurmond is along the beltline. What are you seeing. Reporter we are. Right now were approaching newburn avenue. This is one of the few clear spots at this time, but you notice that it is because everyone is taking it slow. Right now, we arent even going 40 milesperhour as most people are in order to stay safe. All morning long weve been across the triangle and i can tell you we have seen a number of accidents, some of the worst spots including around glenwood, and 440 where we saw at least a stretch. One thing i want to emphasize is in all of these accidents, that weve seen where the people hit a media or hit other vehicles, is that they dont seemton at that point to know at that point. Some drivers look to be scared so they stepped out near the roadways, which is even more dangerous, because roads are away from the roadway, its one thing to remember if the worst were to happen. You have to be on your toes. The best advice is state home. Mikaya thurmond, live drive five. That is just one icy stretch we heard from lieutenant gordon from highway patrol. You can, and then when might something. By afternoon, well be in the 30s but wont feel comfortable until temperatures get above freezing probably around the middle of the afternoon. Its not the day youll be stuck in for the entire day. Just right after lunchtime we should see a big improvement and well see temperatures warming up. This will all be rain at that point. Lets take a look at the radar picture. We are seeing a good bit of stead tow light precipitation across steady to light precipitation, but it is beginning to lighten up a little bit back to the west. We talked about this, about ten certainly still seeing this a little bit lighter back to our west, and this particular hole in the precipitation will continue to push on off to the eastnortheast. Expect it to lighten up from durham southward. And roxboro towards the virginia line, it will be steady. It is in fact. The radar is looking pretty high in the atmosphere all the way up to the virginia line, so it is looking assumes it is snow, but its freezing rain. Steady precipitation from roxboro to oxford and henderson. Its been fairly light up there. Weve seen some light precipitation up and down i95 and back down to the south even lighter for fayetteville, clinton, up towards goldsboro, johnson county, harnett county, havent heard reports of a lot of problems because the precipitation has been so light. We have more waves coming in so that could change. Once we get past another hour or two and this starts to lift a little farther north were looking the some waves coming in through the day today. A lot of this is going to be light. Youre looking at heavier precipitation, but it will be warm enough it will all be rain. Lets take a look at of course continuing to watch some of that precipitation out there starting to lighten up a little bit in the southern part of wake county, but all of this is frozen. Look out your window, and you may see its just rain where i am, well, the temperature is down into the mid20s, so this is not rain, its freezing rain. And heres a look at the radar picture from about 3 a. M. , some of this precipitation that was up to our north, it dipped down around the triangle area, and i really thought we might end up seeing a little bit of snow in changed to freezing rain. Eventually the roads are clear, but dont be fooled. Temperatures are in the mid20s so bridges in particular are very slippery and were seeing a lot of that in the viewing area. You can tell the precipitation, in roxboro is fairly light. Its 23 degrees at the airport, northeast wind at 8 milesperhour hour. Weve backed it off to some drizzle at the airport, but that is freezing drizzle. The dew points 18, and humidity at 79 . Checking out temperatures across the area, of course everythings seeing temperatures below freezing, 21 in south hill, 23 degrees in row knock rapids and 23 in raleigh, 25 in rocky mount and 26 degrees in tarboro. Head south, same story, temperatures in the 20s, 27 in smithfield and erwin, 27. If year seeing wet roads a lot of that like youre seeing wet roads a lot of that will be slick. And developing here to the the east and this worm front will lift across the area overnight. Temperatures will slowly climb and tomorrow morning well probably jump into the 40s and 50s so were not going to be concerned about frozen precipitation for tomorrow morning. Well go from wintery weather to a chance of storms tomorrow. Here we are this morning, 7 a. M. , a lot of folks seeing that wintry mix. Notice by 10 00 we were seeing a break in the precipitation expect along east of i95 and by lunchtime we may have another wave that comes through, but by that point we start to warm things up. Theres 2 00 looking at temperatures in the mid30s from raleigh towards fayetteville, where its 40, but Still Holding on to freezing temperatures around roxboro and warming into the mid30s, maybe to the 50s into fayetteville. Thats that warm air thatll continue to surge northward. We did end up anywhere from a trace up to 2 inches around county, now its going to be the ice accumulation, looking at a trace to maybe 2 10ths of an inch in the western part of our viewing area. Not likely to be enough to cause a lot of power outages, but is it causing problems on the roads this morning. Temperatures of course will warm up through the afternoon, and were going to transition to all rain later on this afternoon. Heavy at times, were looking at probably a messy commute tomorrow with some heavy rain, and thunderstorms, but by tuesday afternoon we do start to dry out and after that we and breathe a sigh of relief. We have some pretty weather especially for the weekend with highs in the 60s. Weve ben telling you the best thing to been telling you the best thing do is just stay home. Especially in wake county. I havent heard too many accidents in durham, although over in Chatham County were hearing 15,501 at the hall river accidents that way and were sending live drive fire, Terry Cantrell to check it out. This is 440 at sonny brook road. This is 440 westbound heading away from sunny brook towards pool road and weve had a couple spin outs there, as people hit bridges that are slippery. This is at the 264 interchange. This is the ramp from 264 ramp, the knightdale eastbound, to pool road that icy bridge has prompted officials to close that down as you leave knightdale on 264 westbound. Some improvement on a sense on the western side, 440 at wade, you saw that accident there on the right shoulder, that earlier blocked all lanes at 440 eastbound, then the d. Ot. Was able to get out there with salt and sand truck and treat that theyve been able to reopen, although thankfully traffics moving along a lot more smoothly. You see that typical scene on a freezingrain kind of morning, cars lose control, and spin out on the other side of the bridge. Id say the vast majority of accidents, thats what were looking at typically. Same thing at 70, the clayton bypass on the western side of johnston, an accident on the median with a slick bridge in the foreground. Again, the viewing area pretty much a little bit in two, between who is seeing snow and freezing rain, although it is kind of changing. So many accidents, you just need to stay put until lunchtime at least. Back to you. Bryan, thank you, youve convinced us looking at all of those Traffic Cameras and those accidents, your best bet, stay home through the Morning Hours. Its even dangerous to get out. We had someone said someone took a nasty spill because the sidewalk was glazed over and the railing was glazed, you cooperate really see it until couldnt really see it until you got there and you fell. More live reports on these terrible driving conditions in stay with us for stevay i lucy. Woman surprised oh, my goodness youveust a ousandrs n ts am thats g s n oe jok, wbettn yey.
