Beginning now. Im martha raddatz. We start with breaking news. Major developments in a country considered one of the most dangerous in the world to the u. S. Now u. S. Special forces announcing that their pulling out of yemen because of the growing chaos. Meaning there will be no u. S. Presence on the ground there. Which could have a huge impact in the fight against isis and al qaeda. Abcs Alex Marquardt has been tracking it all. Reporter its hard to see the situation in yemen as anything other than complete anarchy and a failed state. A complex web of warring factions that have pushed the u. S. Out and created a vacuum that americas biggest enemyies are trying to fill. This weekend, the growing chaos forcing the u. S. To pull out from yemen completely. 100 military trainers and special Operations Forces have left. Forces that remained after the Embassy Closed last month. Eliminating the american presence in the country that the Obama Administration considers vital for the fight against terrorism. Well tonight to maintain the pressure required to keep the American People safe. Reporter now the unrest has reached a new low. The u. S. Backed president has fled the capital. Rebels from the shiite tribe warring. During friday prayers, suicide attacks that targeted more than two different shiite mosques, more than 130 people killed. The Group Warning this is just the beginning. Its unclear how much isis has been involved in the attacks. I do think what is clear is that their ideology and their inspiration has impacted several of these attacks. Yemens spokesman in washington tweeting i hate to say this but im hearing the loud and clear beating of the drums of war. It was in yemen that the u. S. S. Cole was attacked in 2000. 17 american sailors were killed. Then, in 2012 in an operation designed by the yemenbased quad in the Arabian Peninsula the socalled underwear bomber tried to bring down plane with plastic explosives. Martha raddatz later touring the school and apartment where he trained. New video released on the attack on National Museum that left at least 21 people dead. A third gunman was involved. He escaped. That attack like the ones in yemen, evidence of yis krs trying to expand their global reach. Martha . Thank you, alex. The stunning new threat from a group claiming to represent isis. Publishing an online hit list with the names, addresses and photos of u. S. Military personnel. The pentagon is responding this morning. And abcs Hamish Macdonald joins us with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning. This is unprecedented. The names and addresses of around 100 u. S. Military personnel published online by a Group Calling itself the Islamic State hacking division. Theyre calling on supporters to kill those identified at home in the United States. A pentagon spokesman has told us that they wont confirm if the details published are correct. They have been contacting the families of the people on the list mainly air force and navy person nell. Theres a broader warning on the centcom page saying there are bad actors out there trying to gain your information for their own benefit and to use it against you. It doesnt appear this information was hacked from government seveners. Most of this information was in the public domain. Places like social media. Martha . Thank you hamish. Lets bring in the chair of the House Homeland Security committee, michael mccaul. I want to go back to yemen and the dangers there. Can you tell us the latest intelligence on that situation . I think the problem is were not going to have any intelligence in yemen. Its one of the most dangerous spots in the world. Al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is the largest external Operation Force in al qaeda. Theyre responsible for the underwear bomber. Five plots against the u. S. In the last five years. They were tied a group to make bombs and blow up airplanes. Now that we pulled the embassy out and the special operations that became because of the chaos. The rebels are everywhere. Right. We are withdrawn completely. Well have no intelligence footprint or capabilities to monitor what aqap and isis and the shia militants with doing there. Good intelligence stops plots in the homeland. Without that intelligence we cant effectively stop it. This state department is saying, we also continue to actively monitor terrorist threats emanating from yemen and have capabilities postured in the area to address them. Its not as good. Its not incountry. Its not as good. Maybe we can launch drone strikes from other countries. If you dont have the intelligence on the ground how do you know who to hit and where and when. We dont have alice lies on the ground. Its a model from libya. We pulled out of look whats happened. Safe haven. Now we have yemen. All of Northern Africa seems to be falling to this power vacuum being filled by the terrorists. And isis joining with al qaeda. I seemthink it all seems to be blurred anymore. It is. Aqap seems to fight bow boko haram seems to back isis. The elements in yemen greatly disturb me because of their potential to take the United States. Lets talk about what is going on in iraq. I was in baghdad a couple of weeks ago. People seemed confident that the Iraqi Security forces would be able to retake tikrit. Were seeing that stalled. I think its its matter of leadership and policy. I think that were not letting the military do their job here. Its a policy of not a policy to degrade and destroy and defeat. When the president launched the air strikes in syria, he touted yemen as a 340dle for terrorist negotiations. We have no intelligence in syria. Thats a major problem. We have to get more aggressive in taking out isis where they exist. And the head of the snake is in iraq and syria. You saw the threats against the u. S. Military and the hit list with 100 names on it. They probably compiled it from social media. Yet, do they have the capability to strike those people and their families . Well, we have the foreign fighters. About 30,000 of them. 5,000 western passports. According to the clapper. 180 of them have returned or gone to the region. We have a number i cant disclose publicly here in the United States. Theyre foreign fighters. In addition to that the home grown extremists who can be inspired and radicalized over the internet is what greatly concerns me. I think unfortunately, it would be not so difficult to pull off. Thank you very much for joining us chairman mccaul. Now joining us general carterham, retired chair of u. S. Africa command. I want to talk to you about the threats to the family specifically. You heard chairman mccaul saying its possible the threats can be carried out. What does it do to a military community . Its disconcerting to the families, the specific families but more broadly across the armed services. To know that those who engage in social media, that that information now can be corrupted and used by a terrorist organization to threaten them. And in worst case what they hope to do is inspire or motivate someone here in the United States to attack or kill these Service Members or their families. I have to say, last night, when this first went out, i went on facebook to see if i could find them. Very easy to find. The Defense Department said clean up your social media. I went on this morning, some of the pictures and names were still public. Showing theyre in the military. I suppose you would say get that off as well . Yes, the department of defense has been very active over the past many years of reminding Service Members and their families to be very cautious about the energyinformation you put on social media. Disabling you geolocation. Be very circumspect about the location of the Service Members for precisely this reason. For them to try to manipulate social media to their own ends is a worrying trend. You have to worry about cyber security, too. Now to the Nuclear Negotiations are iwith iran. We found many iranians open to more ties in the west last month. How open is the government prepared to be when it comes to the Nuclear Program . Terry moran now with the man who would monitor it. Reporter president obama sending a greeting to the people of iran this week on the persian new year. And urging them to pressure their leaders to reach a deal on the countrys Nuclear Program. We have a chance. Chance to make progress that will benefit our countries and the world for many years to come. Reporter the linchpin to any zael here. In vienna. In the laboratories. The nuclear watchdog. It will be their task to monitor iran and assure the world that its programs are all peaceful. Do you think iran is working on a nuclear womeneapon . We have never said they have a Nuclear Weapon program or Nuclear Weapons. What we said is that we have information so iran has to clarify the information. Reporter this man is the director general of the iaea. You dont know what you dont know. Thats exactly the case. Reporter in the labs the tools of the Nuclear Inspection trade are developed and tested. These are the latest generation cameras that they install in Nuclear Facilities around the world. These underwater cameras, a bank of them here. Theyre in those cooling tanks, the spent fuel ponds, making sure that none of that material gets loose. For some facilities the pictures are transmitted back here to vienna where theyre stored on servers, and every single image is reviewed. And examined. But he says iran must agree to tougher inspections. To the socalled additional protocol. Giving access to sites, data personnel. Any time they may be asked to give access to the iaea. Reporter if that happens, he says there will be years of inspections before iran could be cleared obvious all suspicion. Any deal veechd just the first step. Exactly. And the deal needs to be reached. But, more importantly, it should be implemented. Reporter for years, iran has been playing a cat and mouse game. The real question now for irans leaders is will they stop playing that game and once and for all come clean. For this week. Terry moran, abc news ve yeen that. Something well up a be watching. But thats not fair. Haha. Crest whitestrips work below the enamel surface to whiten 25x better than a leading whitening toothpaste. Crest whitestrips, the way to whiten. Now, our closer look at the growing fire storm over the arrest of a university of virginia honor student. Captured on video. A confrontation that left the 20yearold bleeding on the pavement. Many now asking if officers went too far. And the owner of the bar where the incident began is now speaking out. Abcs linsey davis has the latest. Yo his head is bleeding yo his head is bleeding reporter this morning, virginia it the Police Actively inves gating why Martis Johnson ended up bloodies and under arrest. Once again sparking a National Conversation about police brutality. There are a lot of people at school her that would not be surprised. Reporter a meeting between Law Enforcement and students turned contentious. Black students ultimately walking out in protest. Johnson was among them. One day after his arrest johnson, with ten stitches in his head stood by his attorney. The trauma from what the officer did yesterday will stay with me forever. Reporter the trauma happened when johnson was denied entrance to the pub and was questioned by alcoholic Beverage Control agents. He says johnson never used a fake id. The officers involved described johnson as belligerent. The bar owners disagreed. He was very cordial. Reporter those officers have now been placed on administrative duty. Were going to get to the bottom of it. Someone is going have to answer for it. Lets at least let the investigation run its course. Im all for equality. But equality thats due process. Not mob mentality, which is what im seeing here. Reporter many here say at a school where only 6 of the Institute Body is black, race was likely a major factor. You dont think if it was a white student undereventinger a pub, he would have been arrested also . I do not think so. If he had been arrested he would not have been assaulted. Reporter for this week, linsey davis, abc news charlottesville. Joining us now, tim longo from the Charlottesville Police department department. Do you believe the officers went too far . I think the Virginia State Police Investigation will best answer that. Ill tell you what is depicted on video is unfortunate. Its tragic. Its its certainly disturbing to me, as a law enimportant for official. And frankly, disturbing to this community. Look, this campus, these students, this community, this city has been through a lot in the past several months. Once again, here we are on National Stage over a just an unfortunate event. The owner of the bar, as you heard, talked about johnson having a legal right to be in that establishment and that he did not appear to be intoxicated in the least. Yeah thats certainly what this statements revealed that certainly what the owner said base on the what i have just heard. That will be a factor that im sure the investigation will consider. As it evaluates the reasonableness of the officers actions. My concern, my focus is helping this Community Restore and move forward and continue to have a really important discussion with the students here on grounds about race and the relationship of our community with our police departments. And chief longo, you talked to many students on friday night in a meeting. 100 black students from uva. They didnt seem satisfied with your answer to this question been why has there been a pattern of escalation, especially on black bodies . Its a difficult question to answer. Thats a National Discussion we need to have. You know Law Enforcement depends so much on relationship with its citizens. When any aspect of our citizenry feels threatened that theyre not being treated fairly. That disrupts my ability to have that relationship and carry out the function of what i call relation nal policing. I think together were going to try to figure out the answer to that question. Im committed to this student body this community, to continue to have that discussion. I did meet with the chant president of the naacp. On wednesday or thursday afternoon. And then again on friday we met. We have had an email exchange over the weekend. Im committed to keep working with the students. Let me ask you this. What needs to change . I think attitudes need to change. Hearts need to change. This is a difficult discussion. An uncomfortable discussion as we all saw on friday afternoon with students that are hurt, angry, needing wanting, deserving of answers. We need to keep this discussion alive and well and Law Enforcement, frankly, needs to be reminded of the history of this country. The history of the aspect of race and the importance it plays in our history. We need to remind ourselves of that as we go into the communities to engage the people we need to have a relationship with. Im committed to continuing the discussion here on grounds and throughout the community. You know the im fearful of the reputation of this great place being damaged because of incidents like this. We simply cant allow that to happen. Thank you so much for joining us this morning, chief longo. Thank you so much. Lets bring in abc news contributor john cohen, former counterterrorism coordinator at the Homeland Security department. Also a former police officer. I want to talk to you in that former capacity most of all. Your reaction to what the chief said. He said it was disturbing. Chief longo is a great chief and runs a fine department. He has a challenge. Hes reacting to events that his officers were not a part of. This is one of a series of events that emanated from that university that have been thrust on the National Stage and hes having to deal with. Secondly, and most importantly, i think, that there are members of his community that have already made up their minds. Even though the state police have just initiated their investigation. Theyll look into whether it was appropriate for the officers to approach the student. Theyll look into the situation of the arrest. Some in the community have already decided they know what happened. That damages the relationship between dmunt and police officers, so important across the country. What do you do . Its kritly important. Communities across the country are dealing with increases in heroin overtoesdoses. Gang violence. Increasing crime. As was discussed earlier in the show, a terrorist threat. If we cant have an honest discussion between police and community about how they can Work Together the keep the Community Safe i fear were going see a continuation of the problems were experienceingexperiencing. It seems this should be done quickly. The community is looking for answers right away. It needs to be done quickly, yes. But it needs to be done honestly. Its not helpful when public officials, whether at the university or National Government mischaracterize or jump to conclusions prior to the facts being in regarding these types of situations. Its damaging. Its premature. It sbluss, a in a sense, fuel in a combustible situation. Thank you so much for your comments this morning, john. Up next a big announcement coming up from ted cruz. Plus, a capitol hill shocker . Aaron schock the congressman with the Downton Abbey office, stepping down. Why the fbi is on the case. Back in two minutes. Democratic that gist and comment taner van jones. Oklahoma congressman tom coal. Steve inskeep, host of nprs morning edition, and our own cokie roberts. I want to start with you. I covered the story like a cheap suit. Does the country reassess what happened 0 years soog . How are we supposed to look that . I think people bring to it whatever prejudices they already had. In her case, look she clearly wants to be in the limelight. You dont do this unless you want to be in the limelight. If shes using the limelight for a good cause, more power to her. I was kind of struck listening to her talk about how awful the internet can be the social media, the bullying because it was very similar to what the Romney Family said about not running for president again. You know, its brutal out there. Steve, what about the message of Cyber Bullying and shaming. Is it the right message . Its a very real thing. Were expecting to interview an author with an entire book about the culture of shaming. The way people can be flamd a moment. I twachd ted talk. Its rather interesting. Shes reemping out and talking about other people and other peoples experiences. Its never a bad thing to try to understand whats happening to someone else the particularly someone else on the other side of the Digital Divide who you with reach in an instant, destroy in an instant. I suppose she would be in the spot light no matter what . She might as well do something good. She could get married or change her name. Were you cringing . No not cringing. But, count me as some what skept that will that the timing is purely coincidental. She has the right the make whaefrt statement she cares to make. Probably a teachable moment. I dont think its a profound moment. She says its not political. She doesnt mention the clintons, particularly Hillary Clinton. Listen, i think everybody and i think that would be all 300 million americans who have ever made a joke with lewinsky as the punchline, should watch this talk. It was riveting. Shes much smarter. Shes deeper psychologically than i expected. I think she makes a point that a lot of people can identify with. People have sympathy for Hillary Clinton. I think a lot of people now fear theyre going to be cyberbullied or have their personal lives exposed. She spoke about it in a way punchline no more. Mitt romney discussing the biggest mistake of his run for the 2012 white house. In an exclusive interview with katie couric. And also weighing in on obamas isis strategy. Hes the pete carroll of Foreign Policy play calls. Our choices are limited as a result of the president taking action at the best time. Do you think fighting yis inging isis will ultimately require u. S. Boots on the ground . I sure hope not. As the president of the United States, you have to say were going to defeat isis period. Not we wont do that we wont do that. His take on the email uproar. If you were in Hillary Clintons shoes right now, what would you do about the controversy surrounding her email . Well, i think its hard for me to make that assessment because i dont know what shes hidden. I dont know what she has in her server at home. I dont know what she deleted. But its a mess. What you see her is clintons behaving badly. Weve seen it before. Its always something with with the clintons. They have rules which they describe before they get into something. And then they decide they dont have to follow their own rules. I think that will be a problem for her. Plenty of other politicians have used personal email while in office. You did while you were governor of massachusetts. What is the difference . And why is what she did more egregious . Well, because there are federal guidelines and federal rules that Hillary Clinton didnt follow. There are no state of massachusetts rules about using private email. She was the secretary of state. But she chose to say, no im not going to follow those rules and regulations. Not only am i going to have private email im going the put the server in my house so theres no way anyone could find out what was really sad. That is something going way beyond the pail. And his thoughts on the 2016 field. What do you think of jeb bush . Hes a terrific guy. Were good friends. Think he would be a very good president. Is he your guy then . I havent chosen a person. Dont expect to endorse anybody in the race. Never . Maybe way down the road. We have a lrnlg group ill be watching carefully. Our thanks to katie. Check out the full interview at yahoo . Com. Back now with the roundtable. I want to talk about the emails a little bit more. The House Benghazi Committee on friday called for secretary clinton to turn over her private server for review by april 3rd. Is that something shea should be doing it is. Its a selfinflightedselfinflight ed selfinflicted wound. The whole string of wellpaid speeches when you dont really need the money. If youre getting ready to run for president , you have to get ready to run. Its political stupidity. A new cnn poll out this week. A slim majority of voters think the email issue is a serious problem. 57 still say they would be proud to have her as president. Absolutely. I wish she had handled it differently. She says she wishes she would have handled it differently. This is just the republican machine, it jumps up and down every time she does something. Shes head and shoulders above every republican candidate. That will change once theres one rb. And this particular scandal is a big nothing for her. I agree, its going the go a away. Gomper romney made the point that will stick. There go the clintons again. Its possible that anybody that feels that way wouldnt have voted for her in the first lace. There is the sense of, is it going to be an exhausting scandal ridden administration that we just have to keep going back at. The big new this is morning, a boston globe editorial. Saying Elizabeth Warren step up and run. Democrats would make a big mistake if they let Hillary Clinton coast to the nomination without real opposition. Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren can make sure that doesnt happen. Hear, hear. Warren has said she wont run for president herself. She ought to reconsider. I believe the globe supported barack obama. I do think its better for the Democratic Party if Hillary Clinton is opposed. Because she has to get her arguments out. It would make her a better candidate in the general election. If i were Elizabeth Warren i would not choose to be the sack official lamb in that contest. Steve, im going to turn to you for the republican field. Tomorrow, a big announcement from ted cruz. Surprise surprise, hell be running in 2016. What you to know . What do you know . Others in april. Hes competing for the leadership of the purity wing of the Republican Party. He suddenly has competition in the senate from tom cotton. The freshman republican who is making news. This is a way for cruz to get back out in front of things. Its fascinating to watch the approaches of different republicans. Shn like cruz saying im the purist. Hes the purest of his brand. You are rand paul with credibility as a certain kind of purist. You have other potential candidates like marco rubio or jeb bush who are trying to work on the republican brand. And to argue that some of the stereo types of the party need to bre broken. And that republican ideas can be good for poor people good for minorities. Congressman cole to you, turning to what we call our facebook sentimeter. It measures the social discussion online about the 2016 candidates. Much more conversation online about accounteds like scott walker, rand paul, than jeb bush. In the past week over 1 million for walker and paul. Less than half for bush. The interactions for paul and walker, much more positive. Is that generational . I think, were in a big debate to define who and what the Republican Party is. It transcends the candidacy. Can they grow and be more inclusive . Or if they purify the Republican Party, well be down to 5 . This is an addition not subtraction business. I feel pretty good about the rare of candidates weal put in front of the people. I think the more the merrier. I like the contrast with the democratic field. I want to turn to another republican. A resignation of 33yearold aaron schock who most of us remember from a magazine cover or instagram more than that. Listen to what his father said after his resignation. Ten years from now, whatever hes doing, hell be successful at, ill promise you that. Two years from now hell be successful. Because, if hes not in jail. And on that note. Thanks, dad. Thanks, dad. Thanks for that support. But the fbi is investigating. I thing its awful. I know him. I dont take any joy in the problem he has right now. Whats really interesting is we have a system of legalized bribery where people basically run down the hals of congress with big wheel barrows full of cash. As long as you file the paperwork properly, its okay. He may have gotten greedy and sloppy. But no one is saying his vote was for sale. Im proud of people like Lawrence Lessig at harvard who is trying to call attention to the whole money and politics problem. He may have been dubmb, but hes not for sale. And least an exhibitionist. But the truth of the matter is this is something as tom was saying, about the emails. Why would you do this . Youre in public office. Youre dependent on voters to whant to vote for you. Everything you do is going to be public. And everything your family does is going to be public. So why on earth would you do this . He was bipartisan. Unlike ted cruz and some other people. He was reaching out, trying to do good things. Its a terrible lapse of judgment. He was not for sale. We have people for sale were not talking about. I want to turn to israel. Steve, you just got back. You just interviewed Benjamin Netanyahu. We heard the president , last night in an interview say, essentially, he doesnt trust that Benjamin Netanyahu wants a twostate solution. What are your thoughts . In different ways hes tried to waffle. Balance between his voters and another important constituency, the United States. The United States wants him to go for a twostate solution with the palestinians. His voter base doesnt want him to do that. And netanyahu, from 2009 when he said theoretically, he was in favor of palestinian state, hes said im for it under certain conditions. How will it affect the candidates for 2016 . I think the point the question is the white house has talked about supporting israel in a didnt way. Actually less at the United Nations, where they have really needed israelis have really needed u. S. Support. If that were to happen. If the u. S. Were to let some kind of resolution about a pal stin january state go through the United Nations security counsel, council, you have a live ongoing situation. If that happens, theyll pay a price politically. The Obama Administration and the Democratic Party. Its a huge mistake to make a threat. 99 becomes a partisan issue. Israel has never been a partisan issue. For israel to become a republican cause would be bad. It would split the democrats. It would be bipartisan opposition to a narrowly based stand by the president. This is the worst time for us to be having this thing. Shame on netanyahu, to come over here disrespect the United States, go back home, do fear mongering against his own citizens, then to throw under the bus, not just obama, reagan to say youre not for a twostate solution, that goes against the basis of our partnership. Shame on him for doing that stuff. We should be talking about how to stop the extremists. Not deal with the extremism from netanyahu. And he cant just say never mind. Thats not going over well. Next, we take on the heated debate over islams ties to violent extremism. Stay with us. Now the Big Questions around the connection between islam and terror. Last month, president obama came under fire for referring to violent extremism without mention of islam. Now a new book is taking that brewing controversy head on. Shes become one of islams most prominent critics. Penning four controversial books in ten years. Born into a muslim family in somalia, raised in kenya, she fled africa at 22 after being subjected to female genital mutilation and narrowly escaping an an ranged marriage. She broke from islam, becoming an atheist, and beginning to speak out against the faith. Demanding better treatment of women and charging too many muslims were in the grip of jihad. All of that violence you can no longer deinvolve it from the legion of islam. Reporter that landed her on a most wanted list. Her new book, for reforms of the beliefs she left behind. A prominent activist regarded as an influential voice. Shes devoted her career to promoting tolerance and peace from within her faith. Im joined by ayan hirsi manar omar. Your argument is its foolish to up cyst that the violent acts of radicals are k be divorced from the ideals that affect them 7. Its not a religion of peace. I make a distinction between three sets of muslims. The medina mecca, and the dissidents who want to reform. The medina muslims apply anything and everything that the Prophet Muhammad did and they apply the koran literally. Isis, the taliban. Et cetera. Theres a huge group of muslims, i think theyre the largest number i call them mecca muslims. They are peaceloving and practice only the peaceful parts of their religion. And then the reformists or the heritics who want to reform the religion. Its extremely important today for the medina muslims to lose. We want the dinsssidents to get them to reform from within. Should you be the one to call for that . The minute we start to criticize a religion from within were labeled heretics were condemned to death. Change is going the come from the heretics not the clear ix. Youre trying to make change as well. You believe there should be reform. Is she the right spokesman for this . Think the authenticity for this is important. If you have been on record attacking islam or trying to marginalize them believing in peaceful islam, its hard to call on a reform of islam. I would argue the creation of islam from day one was an act of revolution. Trying to stop the owe presentation from across the gulf region area. The first verse of the koran is read. That is holding accountability. Its not letting the clear ix define your religion but you, with personal responsibility. Once youre questioned, it would not be my first word was pray cover, fast it was read. I believe that is a direct command in the koran from dpod. You have an argument with that . I do. I think that i mention in my book that there are the five key concepts within islam that need to change. Yes, the koran says read. But the koran says kill. And there are muslims who take that literally. Yes, the Prophet Muhammad preached peace. In the bible, the torah as well. The name of the lord should surely be put to death. Or matthew 7 34. There are christians today who are forming movements like the Islamic State. Who want to introduce law and apply it and look at what happens hen sharia law is applied. Wednesday, just this wednesday, 135 people were killed. Should it be such a broad brush . As you say, medina muslims are a small group. I know that means millions and millions of people. Should all muslims doesnt this incite people to be antimuslim. Day in day out in the name of islam, people are killed. Its time to reform so we get to place where we have peace. That is the message of this book. Not to attack, im not here to attack muslims. Im here to say we need that courageous step. And that is to reform the religion from within.
