But at the open centers about 100 miles northeast of here, it lasted for a terrifying 14sec2 d seconds. It happened in the middle of the night. The worst time. Everyone in nair beds. Rescue workers flooding the scene, trying to save lives. Overnight, a deadly earthquake bringing down buildings in central italy. Rescue crews are still scouring the debris this morning. Looking for anyone who may still be trapped. This woman was pulled from the rubble alive. Walls of buildings are completely gone. On this building, only the wall remains. The 6. 2 magnitude quake struck just after 3 30 in the morning. The electricity had gone. We were able to make our way down the stairs into the garden. Reporter many people spent the night outside as the aftershocks came. Quite severe shake of the beds. The first thing i did was panic and we waited for it to just subside to go check on our children. Reporter in rome, about 100 miles northeast, buildings shook for about 30 seconds. One local mayor saying half his town is gone. The Italian Government says damage is severe. Theyre sending heavy equipment to clear wreckage in the popular italian summer resort town. In 2009, central italy was hit by a 6. 3 magnitude quake. That one killed over 300 people and demolished towns. No major city was struck by this quake. That devastation region is a region of picturesque hill top towns, stone houses, very vulnerable to quakes. As after every quake, its a race against time. George . Were join bid michael gilroy. He was in the middle of the quake. Thank you for joining us. Youre in a hotel on the second floor in the town of multipulciano. What happened . Yeah, it was just before 4 00 in the morning. You know, we felt kind of the best way to describe sit a rolling of the bed. That quickly turned into a shake. And, you know, we gathered our stuff and ran out as quick as we could with everyone else. You knew right away it was an earthquake . Didnt know right away. Actually, my first thought was that it was a medical emergency of some sort. Traveling with my girlfriend. Realized that wasnt the case. On the way out, we saw the pretty big chandelier sway trg side to side. Thats when i think we knew for sure. What is the scoop like right now . Yeah, the destruction looks devastating. You know, it looks like there are multiple homes that have come down completely into the roads. And really, terrible scene. So is the village locked in right now . Because theres so much destruction . Thats what it looks like. These roads are very, very narrow. And, the homes are built on top of each other. Theyre all brick. When they come down, theres not a lot of space in between. Are you going to be able to stay in your hotel has it avoided enough damage to stay there . Or are you trying to get out snmgts we had actually planned on leaving. We had a car come at 6 00 in the morning. Were fortunate enough to be able to get out and so we headed down south, away from that region. But the quake region is pretty large, isnt it . It seems to be. You know, we were in the middle of tuscany. A big destination. And it seems like a lot of people were affected all the way down to rome, which is where we are now. Were glad youre okay, michael. People didnt know what hit them. They were asleep. We want to turn to dr. Lucy jones, an expert in earthquakes for more on the threat in italy and what we need to be prepared for at home. Dr. Jones, according to reports, the earthquake lasted for nearly 2 30. Is that unusual . I think thats an expression of how long people felt shaking. That probably includes some aftershock. A magnitude 6 is going to be on a fault about ten miles long and probably last about five or six seconds that the earth is producing energy. Thats interesting. This is the second major earthquake to hit italy in seven years. You have called this area the california of europe, yes . Right. Its just like in california the United States, california is where the plate boundary and most of the earthquakes are happening. Italy is the same thing in europe. Its the most Common Source of earthquakes. The 2009 earthquake that killed several hundred people is on the same fault system. As was a quake back in 1997. There have been as many as 150 aftershocks. What are the big concerns right now . There mr. Be continuing aftershocks. That Mountain Range is characterized by earthquake sequences, where there will be a lot of events. There will probably be more damaging earthquakes in the sequence, potentially larger than the first one. As theyre searching for survivors, theyre having to deal with significant aftershocks, yes . Absolutely. The Recovery Time can be very, very dangerous. The buildings unstable. Any concern here at home . No, one thing we have seen when we look at how earthquakes trigger others, it happens very nearby. Once you get more than 100 miles away, you just dont see any extra triggering going on. A report last week said Russian Hackers compromised a private Communications Network for a Foundation One by american billionaire george soros. Now to outrage over the punishment for a former High School Athlete who was charged with sexually assaulting two classmates. He got two years prohibition instead of prison time. Reporter david becker wont spend a single day behind bars. If he followses the rules of his probation, he wont have a criminal record. This morning, a massachusetts teenager charges with sexually assaulting two classmates is free. A judge sentencing him to two years probation. Prosecutors had aked that david becker, seen early this summer in court, serve two years in prison. In april, two of his female classmates said they were sleeping after a house party and each woke up to the 18yearold assaulting them separately. In an interview with police, becker allegedly denied having sni contact with one of the alleged victims the said that when the other didnt protest, he thought it was okay. In an audio recording from his june plea hearing, his lawyer arguing the former High School Basketball player was a good student, with no previous criminal record. And he was a only have tier. Those classmates engaging in a Testy Exchange with mcclain on facebook. Saying you know darn well you never saw him that lie brea. To continue with this story 17 years late sir disgusting. Mcclain replying, wow, this is crazy. Im not lying about any of this. The now 34yearold is yed spending almost half his life in jail. I had no reason to kill her. Reporter his new trial fwranted on didnt grounds. But the judge questioning why syeds defense lawyer in 1999 lever contacted mcclain. Major plot point in serial. In there was some technicality that would prove his innocence, great. I think, asia, you might be that technicality. Reporter mcclains lawyer saying the classmates allegations are bizarre and wholly foughtually untrue. She took to twitter. They say im a liar. I say im not. She thinks the state wants to discredit her because she presents a problem to their case. Syed remains in prison while prosecute rers appealing the ruling. Lets talk to dan abrams, nancy grace about that. Lets pick up on the last point. The decision to grant a new trial is not based on the witnesses. Is the new trial definitely Going Forward . No. When you have a legal ruling like this, prosecutors can appeal. Theyre appealing the decision for a new trial. Sure, as a technical legal matter, it doesnt really matter because the ruling from the court below relied on something else. Cell phone tower data. But, the fact that there are now question about the star alibi witness has inevitably got to seep into the appeal. If there is a new trial this is syeds star witness. If this goes to trial, pretty devastating, isnt it . Jt it is. I want to remind everybody that while the cell phone records are what the judge grants the motion for a new trial on, the defense is appealing the decision saying it should have been granted because of the alibi witness, asia mcclain, who has tried to make money off this case and her book that is for sale on amazon, confessions of a serial alibi. Shes gone on tv, podcasts, taken to twitter, selling a book. Thats not going to help anything. But back to the facts, the cell phone tower issue is the main issue. These two sisters, did you look what they said . Their statement is so rich in detail, and has been corroborated, that they were there at Woodlawn High School in a coop class, with asia mcclain, the alibi witness and had this argument. To its basically two against one. Is this a popularity contest . No. But will it destroy her alibi . Yes. One question is the legal match nations as we work our way through the appeal. The other is lets assume he gets a new trial. Shes suppose ed to be his star witness. This is devastating. I cant wait for them to bring that book out at trial. Hes finally going to get his day now. Finally the world is going to see that hes not guilty. Even if he gets this new trial, this information is going to be a real problem for him at trial. The state election board decision is going to hold. If shes forced to run, will she . Shes just on the ballot. From everything ive seen, shes not going to campaign or do anything. It looks like she has a real physical issue with her spine in the course of this. I think in the end, the democrats will be successful in having their kptd on the ballot. Its not going to be that competitive a race. Its a republican district. The republicans, because of donald trump on the the ballot, want to protect everybody they can. Thank you, matt. Now to the big headline about breadwinners. A new study by researchers at the university of connecticut find that more men are depended on to be sole providers, the more their Mental Health suffers. What do you make of in . I think the study will surprise a lot of people. It turns stereo types on their head. You have a study that shows men who are under pressure where the expectation is they have to be the breadwinner texas more they have to earn in a marriage and support their family, the less happy the less healthy they are according to the study. The study looked at a number of people over the course of 15 year. The caveat is they looked at people age 18 to 3. Im sure there are people out there married, 34, 44, 54, things change along the way. You might take some pride. Its surprising to me. It does show something didnt for women. For women, women are actually happier in this study when they get to support the family more. When they get to earn a little bit more. So its the opposite for women than it is for men. I can buy that. I can buy that. We turn to a big debate about home work. It was sparked by a texas teachers letter to parents. Its gone viral.
